Regionally the lowest average concentration of TOC was observed with 0.66 mg/L in Nakdong river, while the highest concentration of TOC was observed with 0.91 mg/L in Yeongsan river. The average concentration of TOC for national water quality monitoring site showed that the lowest average concentration of TOC was 1.58 mg/L in Han river, while the highest concentration of TOC was 3.37 mg/L in Yeongsan river. Seasonally, the average concentration of TOC at six upstream sites showed 0.77 mg/L and 0.56 mg/L, 0.69 mg/L and 0.63 mg/L, 0.80 mg/L and 0.73 mg/L, and 1.21 mg/L and 0.68 mg/L between wet season and dry season in Han river, Nakdong river, Gem river and Yeongsan river, respectively. For the national water quality site, the average concentration of TOC between wet season and dry season was 1.70 mg/L and 1.45 mg/L in Han river, 2.01 mg/L and 1.75 mg/L in Nakdong river, 2.01 mg/L and 1.60 mg/L in Gem river, and 3.75 mg/L and 3.00 mg/L in Yeongsan river. The distribution of TOC in upstream and national water quality monitoring sites on four major rivers have been influenced by seasonal and regional characteristics in Korea.
This study investigated the spatial and temporal water circulation characteristics of Paldang Reservoir by continuous hydraulic and water temperature survey. Due to differences in water temperature and discharge pattern of Ipo Weir and Cheongpyeong Dam, the flow and temperature fluctuations were different in sections of Namhan River and Bukhan River in Paldang Reservoir. At the stratification period, the water temperature of the discharge of Ipo Weir was higher than that of the Cheongpyeong Dam. Therefore, in the surface layer of the downstream of Bukhan River, relatively high temperature water is located and back water phenomenon occurred, and convergence zone is formed. In the downstream section of Namhan River, low-temperature water was distributed in the middle and lower layers, and the upstream flow appeared to be difficult to mix with the surface layer.
The theory and practice of water quality scoring and indexing are introduced. The monthly water analysis data are available for six stations long the down-stream Han River whthin the areal boundary of the Special City of Seoul. The data cover the period between 1975 and 1979 inclusive and contain the analytical findings on 37 water constituents including DO, BOD, temperature, total solids and etc. Sic parameters are selected form the 37 items, that, to the judgement of the writer, best reflect the water quality of the Han River. They are; dissolved oxggen saturation, pH, fecal coliform, total solids, BOD and nitrate+ammonia. For each of the six parameters, a subscore function is developed and graphically presented to facilitate the transform of a measurment of the arameter to a subscore on a common score(e.G. 0-100) The score of a sample is calculated as a fuction of the six subscores, using four different approaches; (1) the unweighted arithmetic water quality score, (2) the weighted arithmetic water quality score, (3)the unweighted multiplicative score and (4) the reduced (total) score. Independent of these calculated scores, the experts' score which is calculated by averaging the ratings of water quality experts is obtained and compared with each of the four calculated scores by means of the least square method. The experts' score compares most favorably with the "reduced" score with the correlation coefficient of 0.956 : therefore this method of water quality scoring is adopted to calculate the Han River water quality scores and indices. Water quality index data for Guiri, ukdo, Pokwangdong, Noryangjin, Yongdungpo and Kayang Stations, 1975-1979 are as follow: The overall water quality index data of the Han River between Guiri and Kayang Stations are found; 47.3 in 1976, 48.0 in 1977, 48.5 in 1978 and 54.7 in 1979, indicating the general trend towards water quality improvent in this part of the river, in terms of the increased water quality index by average 1.85 points per year during this period. Finally the optimum sampling frequencies distributed among the six stations, using an equation which takes into account the coefficients of variation of the water quality scores and indices arec calculated.alculated.

This study aims to identify the characteristics of organic matter and pollutant sources using water quality and stable isotope ratios (δ15N, δ13C) of the two inflow tributaries (Gulpo (GP) and Anyang (AY) streams). Water samples were analyzed in June and September 2018, and the results showed that the concentrations of nutrients, such as TN and NO3-N, were increased at GP4, which is located at the downstream of sewage treatment facilities(STFs). TOC and TN ratios showed a strong positive correlation (R2 = 0.77, p<0.01) at all points except for GP4. The results of GP's stable isotope ratio analysis do not appear to be a constant cluster compared to AY because GPs with large amounts of pollutants from the industry (metal processing companies, etc.) have less tributary, shorter waterway and significantly different external sources. This could be attributed to different sources of external inflow despite its smaller number of tributaries and shorter waterways than AY. In the first half of the year, the δ155N of GP4 was affected by discharge of STFs, while AY3 seemed to have an influence of tributary than the discharge of STFs. Consequently, using water quality, stable isotope ratio and C/N, the sources of contamination in two streams with different contaminants were identified and origin was estimated.

We analyzed the formation of phytoplankton community and the occurences of odorus compound from benthic cyanobacteria in North, South Han-River, Paldang-Lake and Kyeongan-Stream sediments. Sediments were incubated in different water temperature. Akinetes were found (0~500 cells/g) with the highest number on sediment in Yangsoo railroad bridge (YC). The result showed that Anabaena ranged between $0.02{\sim}0.53{\times}10^3cells/mL$ in Sambong (SB), YC, Mukhyen-Stream (MS), Paldang-Lake (P2) and Kyeongan-Stream (KK). The total 68 taxa of phytoplankton were observed during the incubation period. A standing crop of phytoplankton was in the range of $0.13{\sim}8.97{\times}10^3cells/mL$ and Microcystis appeared in SB, YC, P2 and KK sites with $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ temperature. In South Han-River (P3), Oscillatoria tenuis was dominant at $25^{\circ}C$ temperature. The concentration of geosmin was the highest in SB-$15^{\circ}C$ (25.5 ng/L), and the concentration of 2-MIB was the highest in P3-$25^{\circ}C$ (286.8 ng/L). Odorous compounds were detected in all the temperature conditions from each site. Our results indicate that the dominant benthic cyanobacteria (O. tenuis, O. limosa, Phormidium tenue and Pseudanabaena limnetica) have high correlation with the occurrence odorous compounds and 2-MIB.
Since the 1970s regulations against the pollution of drinking water have been introduced in Lake Paldang watershed area. To understand the effects of water environment management policies and the impacts of climate changes on Lake Paldang, a long-term comprehensive study of this watershed and the changes in its water environment is required. In this study, we analyzed changes in the weather, hydrology, sources of pollution, water quality, and algal development from 2000 to 2015 year based on the statistical data provided by several national information systems. While the population and amount of sewage in the Lake Paldang watershed increased by about 1.5 times, the amount of animal manure showed a decreasing trend during the same period. The wastewater also increased by about 1.5 times while the amount of water intakes rose by about 1.14 times. The water quality in front of the Paldang Dam, which is the representative monitoring site of the Lake Paldang, was stable. The annual average BOD concentration remained within 2 mg/L, which is a "Good (lb)" level according to the environment standards of Republic of Korea. The development of phytoplankton and harmful cyanobacteria were largely influenced by meteorological factors.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to build COD regression models for the Han River and evaluate water quality. Methods: Water quality data sets for the dry season (as of January) during a four-year period (2012-2015) were collected from the database of the Han River automatic water quality monitoring stations. Statistical techniques, including combined genetic algorithm-multiple linear regression (GA-MLR) were used to build five-descriptor COD models. Multivariate statistical techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) are useful tools for extracting meaningful information. Results: The $r^2$ of the best COD models provided significant high values (> 0.8) between 2012 and 2015. Total organic carbon (TOC) was a surrogate indicator for COD (as COD/TOC) with high reliability ($r^2=0.63$ in 2012, $r^2=0.75$ for 2013, $r^2=0.79$ for 2014 and $r^2=0.85$ for 2015). The ratios of COD/TOC were calculated as 2.08 in 2012, 1.79 in 2013, 1.52 and 1.45 in 2015, indicating that biodegradability in the water body of the Han River was being sustained, thereby further improving water quality. The BOD/COD ratio supported these findings. The cluster analysis revealed higher annual levels of microorganisms and phosphorous at stations along the Hangang-Seoul and Hantangang areas. Nevertheless, the overall water quality over the last four years showed an observable trend toward continuous improvement. These findings also suggest that non-point pollution control strategies should consider the influence of upstreams and downstreams to protect water quality in the Han River. Conclusion: This data analysis procedure provided an efficient and comprehensive tool to interpret complex water quality data matrices. Results from a trend analysis provided much important information about sources and parameters for Han River water quality management.
In order to clearify the microflora of the lower course of the Han River and the effect of the marine water on the Han River, the study was carried out at Paldang, Kwangjang, Noryangjin, and Haengju for 4 months (from May till September in 1965). The results obtained are as follows: 1) Water temperature, transparency, light intensity, pH, silicate, and salinity were determined as environmental conditions. 2) Samples collected from 4 stations were identified and classified by Engler's classification system. It resulted in 4 Phyla, 3 Classes, 13 Orders, 25 Families, 61 Genera, 155 Species, and 16 Varieties. The total numbers of phytoplanktons identified are 171. Of the number, 106 species and 12 varieties were recorded in this paper for the first time. 3) A comparative observation on the distribution of marine phytoplanktons and salinity in the Han River showed a fact that the Han River was biologically affected in the middle portion between Noryangjin and Haengju by marine water. Furthermore, the salinity determined at Haengjuduring a day(at high tide, September 26, 1995) supported the above fact. 4) Four species among the identified species are saprobic planktons and it is regarded as the forms derived from Chunggyechon.
Scale is formed when hard water is heated or cooled in heat transfer equipments such as heat exchangers, condensers, evaporators, cooling towers, boilers, and pipe walls. When scale deposits in a heat exchanger surface, it is traditionally called fouling. The objective of the present study is to investigate the formation of fouling in a heat exchanging system. A lab-scale heat exchanging system is built-up to observe and measure the formation of fouling experimentally. Water analyses are conducted to obtain the properties of HAN river water. In the present study a microscopic observation is conducted to visualize the process of scale formation. Hardness of HAN-river water is higher than that of tap water in Seoul.
Long term monthly monitoring data showed that the water quality of streams flowing into Lake Paldang has been improved by various strategy for water. However, the effect of quality on Lake Paldang is still insufficient because of nonpoint source from watershed. In order to evaluate quantifying methods for pollution source and make a suggestion on improvements, Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was constructed by using data set from the water quality and streamflow monitoring network in the Kyoungan watershed for Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). Load duration curve (LDC) based on the result of the Kyoungan watershed SWMM indicated that the water quality criterion on $BOD_5$ was often exceeded in up-stream than down-stream. From flowrate-load correlation curve, SS load significantly increased as streamflow increases. 75.3% of streamflow and 62.1% of $BOD_5$ loads is discharged especially in the zone of high flows, but monitoring data set didn't provide proper information about the conditions and the patterns associated with storm events. Therefore, it is necessary to acquire representative data set for comparing hydrograph and pollutograph through monitoring experimental watershed and to establish methods for quantifying point and nonpoint source pollutant loads.
