The construction of river mouth dam has prevented seawater from backwarding to upstream in Kum river estuary since 1990. Field observation on environmental factors, and zooplankton and phytoplankton dynamics have been carried out three times with two month interval in the summer and autumn in 2000 at three selected stations in Kum river estuary. Blockade of seawater flowing backward to upstream caused sharp contrast of zooplankton fauna and phytoplankton flora between upstream and downstream of the river mouth dam. Freshwater cladocerans i.e., Bosmina longisrostris and Daphnia galeata dominated in the upstream, and marine copepods of Acartia omorii and Paracalanus crassirostris occurred abundantly in downstream of the dam. Freshwater diatoms did not distributed in the downstream of the dam except Melosira varians, while marine diatom of Cylidrotheca closterium occurred in benthic waters bath in upstream and downstream of the dam. The construction of the river mouth dam seems to play an ecological role to blockade the input of marine organism into the upstream in Kum river estuary.

This study analyzed the possibility of inland navigation in the Han river mouth, from Singok weir to the junction of Gongleung Stream. As a result of analysis using recent survey data and water level data, it was found that the number of days that a 250 - 400 ton class vessel can operate in the Han river estuary is less than 119 days per year. In the case of a 400 - 1,500 ton class vessel, it was found that only about 47 days per year can be operated. In this region, even in the absence of large-scale floods, the river bed continues to change significantly due to strong tides, indicating that there are limitations in securing a stable waterway. Therefore, for stable inland navigation, it is judged that continuous investigation and analysis of the possibility and stability of waterways are necessary.
Species composition and abundance of fish larvae were studied from May 1988 through August 1989 in the Han River Estuary and adjacent Kyunggi Bay, Korea. Of 23 taxa identified, Coilia nasus, llisha elongata, and Cyprinidae spp. were dominated. Maximum density (3,5771/1,000m)$^3$ occurred in August 1988 and minimum (3/1,m$^3$) in February 1989. O1igo- ormesohaline species dominated during ebb tides while polyhaline species during flood tides. Correspondence analysis revealed that three distinctive species groups; oligohaline species, Coilia nasus, Ilisha elongata and Cyprinidae spp., which dominated at both channels of Kwanghwa Island (stations 1, 2), mesohaline species, Sardinella zunasi and Gobiidae spp., at the mouth of Yeomha Channel (station 3), and polyhaline species, Engraulis japonicus and Syngnathus schlegeli, in the middle of Kyunggi Bay (station 4). Coilia nasus was the most abundant species and reported first time in the study area. Given the species composition and density of fish larvae, the Han River Estuary is considered to be a major spawning and nursery ground for brackish water species such as Coilia nasus, Ilisha elongata and some Cyprinidae spp.
Temporal (seasonal) and spatial distributions and variations of various physico-chemical factors (salinity, temperature, pH, DO, COD, SPM, POC, silicate, DIP, DIN) in surface and bottom waters were studied in the coastal environment with typical macro-tidal range and monsoonal weather condition, Gyeonggi Bay, west coast of Korea. Spacial distribution patterns of these factors were generally similar to each other, and appeared to be inversely related to the distribution pattern of salinity, suggesting that water quality of the study area was primarily controlled by the physical mixing process of Han-River freshwater with nearby coastal seawater. During flooding season, silicate- and nitrogen-rich Han River water directly flowed into offshore as far as $20\sim30\;km$ from the river mouth, probably causing serious environmental problems such as eutrophication and unusual and/or noxious algal bloom, etc. Except the surface water during summer flooding season, high concentrations of nutrients appeared generally in dry season, whereas low values in spring, possibly because of the occurrence of spring phytoplankton bloom. On the other hand, nutrient flux through the estuary seems to be primarily depending on river discharge, sewage discharge and agricultural activities, especially during the rainy season. Also, nutrients in this coastal waters are considered to be supplied from the sediments of tidal-flats, which developed extensively around the Han-River mouth, especially during fall and winter of dry and low discharge seasons, possibly due to the stirring of tidal flat sediments with highly enriched pore-water nutrients by storm. And also, COD and DIN concentrations in the study area consistently increased during the last 20 years, probably because of agricultural activities and increasing discharge of industrial and domestic wastes.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the two dimensional model in natural rivers. In this study, two dimensional unite element model, SMS, is used to simulate a complex flow along with the sediment movements in the natural river. The RMA-2 model embeded in SMS is used to simulate flow phenomena and SED-2D model is employed to simulate sediment transport. The model is applied to the confluence zone of the Gam River and mouth of Nakdong River. For model calibration, the result of the unsteady flow analysis is compared with the Typhoon 'Rusa' data. In addition, the runoff analysis was conducted for the determination of the project flood and the flood forecasting. The simulation results presented the characteristics of two dimensional flow with velocity vector and flow depth. The sediment transport characteristics are shown in terms of sediment concentration as well as bed elevation change. Accordingly, the SMS model in this study turned out to be very effective tool for the simulation of the hydrodynamic characteristics under the various flow conditions and corresponding sediment transports in natural rivers.

This study modified the properties and boundaries of the inland wetland types through the structural edit of the National Wetland DB, and analyzed the characteristics of the different land cover by area and the entire inland wetlands of South Korea. The inland wetlands of the Gangwon Basin had a small area of waters. In addition, the ratio of natural barren was high, reflecting the characteristics of the upper reaches of the large river in the east and west part of Gangwon Province. The Geum River Basin had a high percentage of aggregate land due to the development of large alluvial land, and the ratio of artistic barren was low, so various ecosystem service of wetland elements were distributed evenly. The Nakdong River Basin had a high proportion of waters as water level in the channel rose due to the installation of 4 Major Rivers Beam, and the ratio of Natural barren was low. Moreover, the water level of the main attributes flowing into the Nakdong River drainage system was not high, so the ratio of vegetation concentration was high. The Yeongsan River Basin showed that Waters had the high proportion. And the distribution of Natural barrens represented differently according to the Yeongsan River Basin and the Seomjin River Basin. Finally, Sand and Gravels supplied to rivers during precipitation were deposited in the main stream of the Han River Basin, and the differences between the side and high side was large in the area, reflecting the characteristics of the mouth of a river, so the Natural barren of Clay was distributed.
This study was focused on establishing the concepts of the instream flow to prevent the problems for the conceptual ambiguity and the difference in the instream flow estimation methods. The average drought flow is defined as the flow required to guarantee the minimum function of the river such as prevention of drying. The environmental control flow is defined as the flow required to control optimal river environment, the flow required for navigation, prevention of sea water-intrusion, protection of river management facilities, conservation of water Quality, fishing, prevention of river mouth closure, control of groundwater level, protection of animals and plants, and landscape. The average drought flow was obtained by flow duration analysis for the natural flows in the Han River at Indo-Bridge gaging station. When considering the 9 factors related to environment conservation, the conservation of water quality was proved to be most important. The pollutants for the river flows were estimated and the water qualities were forecasted. After comparing the water qualities in the future and water quality standards, there quired optimal dilution flow was estimated. The average drought flow and environmental control flow are all non-consumptive flows. Therefore larger flow between them, i.e., Max. (average drought flow, environmental control flow) can be the instream flow. The river management flow can be added to the flows for water utilization in the downstream. The results from this study are expected to be very helpful in the systematic river management on the other main rivers in Korea.

In this study, we tried to quantitatively study the distribution of estrogenic activity in sediment from Gwangyang Bay by E-screen assay. Besides, we compared the estrogenic activity and the concentration of chemical pollutants. The highest estrogenic activity was recorded at the stations(GY6 and GY8) close to industrial complex and the river mouth of Seomjin. These results obtained from the E-screen assay similar to those of simultaneous analytical detection of 310 chemicals. In particular, GY6 and GY8 sites are confirmed as the full agonist sites because of their RPE values were over 90% having strong estrogenic effect. Also, their EEQ(Estradiol Equivalency Quantity) values are 35.6 ng/g and 14.6 ng/g, low than that of other sites, and these results suggests that have relatively high estrogenic efficiency in Gwangyang Bay. From these results, we can estimate that the stations close to industrial complex and the river mouth of Seomjin are major sources of endocrine disrupter in Gwangyang Bay. On the other hand, when we tried to compare the endocrine disrupter activity and $COD_{Mn}$ value, that is not correlated.
The development of the egg, larvae, and juveniles of Acheilognathus macropterus from the Wicheon stream of Nakdonggang River was investigated for early life history characteristics. The fish used in the study were collected from Wicheon stream located in Bian-myeon, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The fertilized egg was 1.88±0.09 mm (n=30) in long diameter and 1.34±0.06 mm (n=30) in short diameter. After fertilization at a water temperature of 20℃, the egg took 31 h and 40 min to hatch. Newly hatched larvae had an average total length of 3.92±0.13 mm (n=30) and possessed a yolk sac the mouth and anus were not developed. Twenty days after hatching, the postflexion larvae had an average total length of 8.08±0.29 mm (n=30), with the tail tip fully bent at 45° and began feeding. Thirty-three days after hatching, the number of fin stems reached an integer with an average total length of 15.0±1.08 mm (n=30). In this study, differences in the egg size, hatching time, melanophore development period, and distribution location were confirmed between A. macropterus and allied species.
Forty sediment samples from Kyeonggi Bay, Korea were analyzed for butyltins, including tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), and monobutyltin (MBT) to determine their distribution and source in this area. Total butyltin concentrations in Kyeonggi Bay sediments ranged from 0.8 to 297 ng/g dry wt. with a mean value of 38 ng/g. The highest butyltin concentration was found in the innermost site in Incheon Harbor basin. The mouth of Han River had higher butyltin levels in sediments compared to open ocean. Butyltin levels correlated well with organic carbon content of sediment, but the major factor was the distance from the source area where antifouling paints were used for vessels and marine structures. Butyltin concentrations in the study area were lower than those reported for bays in other parts of the world. Considering the high toxic potential and sediment/water partition coefficient of TBT, further studies are needed to assess its biological effect in the marine ecosystem of Kyeonggi Bay.
