  • In this study a general analysis method for watersheds with the entire runoff conditions and corresponding water quality is proposed and its applicability based on the currently available information is investigated. Using the 8-day-interval data set of runoff and water quality observed by Nakdong River Environment Research Center, the flow duration curve and discharge-load relation curve for each unit watershed are established, then the load duration curve is finally constructed. This paper discusses how the load duration curve can be used in the assessment of TMDL. The entire Nakdong river watershed is also divided into prior managing areas of point sources or non-point sources in a way of general management. It is thought that LDC can be a great tool for visualizing overall probabilities of current water quality and thus for the TMDL management.

  • This study reviewed the behavior(movement) characteristics of floating marine debris flowing in the Nakdong River Estuary using a simple numerical particle-tracking model on the conditions of the maximum water discharge outflow from the Nakdong River barrage during the passage of typhoon Maemi in 2003. The simulation showed that the particle distribution and movement of floating marine debris in the Nakdong River Estuary reached a stable state at 72 hours after the typhoon had passed, during the flood period of river discharge. The quantity of floating particles distributed on the east coast of Gadeok and Jinu Islands increased by 40% at 33 hours after starting the model, while the change in other sea areas was 20-40%.

  • As a result of analysis based on the observed data for BOD, COD and TOC in order to manage non-biodegradable organics in the Geumho River, COD/BOD ratio was analyzed as the occupying predominance proportion. In this study, the classification(changes in water quality measurement : increase, equal, decrease) and measurement of BOD and COD were analyzed for trends over the past 10 years from 2005 to 2014 in the Geumho River. The Geumho River is expected to need non-biodegradable organics management because BOD was found to be reduced 61.1% and COD was found to be increased 50%. As a result of the analysis of land use, the Geumho-A is a unit watershed area of $921.13km^2$, which is the most common area that is occupied by forests. The Geumho-B is a unit watershed area of $436.8km^2$, which is the area that is highest occupied by agriculture and grass of 24.84%. The Geumho-C is a unit watershed area of $704.56km^2$ accounted for 40.29% of the entire watershed, which is the area that is occupied by urban of 15.12%. Load of non-biodegradable organics, which is not easy biodegradable according to the discharge, appeared to be increased because flow coefficient of COD and TOC at the Geumho-B were estimated larger than 1 value. The management of non-point sources of agricultural land is required because the Geumho-B watershed area occupied by the high proportion of agriculture and field. In this segment it showed to increase the organics that biodegradation is difficult because the ratio of BOD and TOC was decreased rapidly from GR7 to GR8. Thus, countermeasures will be required for this.

  • Trend of some hydrologic features such as precipitation, runoff and reservoir storage rates in the five great river systems of Han, Nakdong, Keum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river watershed areas were surveyed and analysed. The sample period of Sept. 1994 to Aug. 1998 (four years) was chracterized by unusual climatic features such as El Nino, La Nina and areal terrible storms. And also average values of rainfall and runoff of the priod of 1961 to 1990 (30 years) were surveyed and analysed compared with the sample preiod events for the same river systems. In case of the monthly mean rainfall of the sample period (Sept. 1994 to Aug. 1998 : 48 months) in the five great river systems, 20 months, 19 months, 20 months, 21 months and 18 months in the Han, Nakdong, Keum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river system respectively were higher than monthly average rainfall records of the 30 year records. For the monthly runoff in the same river systems, 7 months, 9 months, 7 months, 11 months and 11 month in the Han, Nakdong, Keum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river systems respectively were higher than the monthly average runoff of the period of 30 years. For the storage rates, most of the dams in the Han river systems were highly stored through the year continuously and Paldang dam was specially higher than the other dams in the same river system. And most of the dams in the other river systems were stored irregularly but getting much better than early time during the 48 months. And special climatic features were not found during the sample period of 48 months, Sept. 1994 to Aug. 1998.

  • More severe and frequent flood and drought have increased the attentions on the river management. In particular, baseflow is an important element among many streamflow characteristics because streamflow is mainly consisted of direct runoff and baseflow. In this regard, this study attempted to analyze the relationship between streamflow variability and baseflow contributions on Nakdong river basin. For this, two Streamflow Variability Indices (SVI) were used: Coefficient of Variation (CV) and Coefficient of Flow Regime (CFR). Furthermore, baselow separation was individually conducted by three methods (PART, WHAT and BFLOW), and based on this, Baseflow Index (BFI) was calculated. Also, we used the daily streamflow data retrieved from 27 gauge stations in Nakdong river basin for baseflow separation. The results showed that BFI calculated by three models ranges from 0.14 to 0.90 for 27 gauge stations. For SVI, BFI has much higher correlation with CV than with CFR. Also, the inversely proportional relationship between BFI and CV showed that higher baseflow contribution, less streamflow variability.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the factors of C. sinensis infection among the residents in vicinity of the Nakdong River and the infection status of fishes in the stream with C. sinensis maetacercaria. Methods: Selected five regions of the Nakdong River and collected freshwater fishes from the stream to examine their metacercarial infections; and studied the status and causes of C. sinensis infection in 552 residents living within 5 kilometers from the river. Results: Among the 552 residents studied, 13.8% were infected with C. sinensis, and among 379 freshwater fishes of 20 species collected from the five regions, 41 fishes of 8 species were infected with C. sinensis metacercaria. Conclusion: In order to prevent human C. sinensis infection and transition to chronic liver ions, we need to develop and apply good programs such as continuous health education, personal hygiene improvement, active medical treatment for those infected with C. sinensis, and residents’ voluntarily stop of eating freshwater fishes in the raw state.

  • Using the data from the national survey of fish, we determined the population size and the distribution of Micropterus salmoides, which is a translocated species into the aquatic ecosystem of Korea. . The spatial concentration of this species was determined by performing an optimized hot spot analysis. After determining potential invasiveness and risk assessment, we measured the disturbance of biodiversity in the aquatic ecosystem. The result of distribution analysis indicates that the population of M. salmoides was concentrated in the major basins of Han river, Geum river, Nakdong river, and Yeongsan-Seomjin river, including the Jeju island. In particular, Nakdong river basin showed the highest appearance rate. On the contrary, Yeongsan-Seomjin river basin showed the lowest appearance rate. The Nakdong river and the Nakdong river basin were the areas with the high spatial concentration of M. salmoides. On the other hand, only Han river basin and Geum river basin had the lowest spatial concentration. The fish invasiveness screening kit(FISK) was used to assess M. salmoides, which inhabited a broad region of aquatic ecosystem: the assessment score was 31.0, indicating its 'highly invasive' nature. Our study aims to encourage research that improves the biodiversity and the conservation of M. salmoides in a priority area.

  • QUAL2E-AFOSM model is developed to forecast the water quality by reliability analysis in the Nakdong River. A varied-flow analysis is performed for the reach of Waegwan to Mulgeum to estimate hydraulic parameters. An optimization technique by BFGS method is applied to determine the optimum reaction parameters and calibrations and verifications are performed based on these parameters. A reliability analysis for the stochastic analysis in a river is studied using the AFOSM method. The variations of water quality and discharge in the headwater, tributaries, and reaction coefficients are considered. Risks of violating existing water quality standards at several loactions in the Nakdong River are computed by using the QUAL2E-AFOSM method. The computed results computed by QUAL2E-AFOSM model agree with those of the Monte-Carlo method in QUAL2EU model.

  • The climatological characteristics of the area averaged monthly precipitation over the Han- and Nakdong-river basins were investigated. The data used for this study is monthly precipitation data from 51 meteorological stations for the period of 1954 to 2002. The magnitude of area averaged precipitation in the Han-river basin was about 10% larger than that in the Nakdong-river basin. However, the variability of two monthly precipitation time series exhibited similar characteristics: April precipitation tends to decrease and August precipitation increase significantly, while there was no significant trend for the other months. There were some indications of abrupt change around the 1970's in the periodicity of precipitation and relationship with El Nino index. September precipitation showed negative correlation with NINO3 index but November precipitation, positive correlation with NINO3 index, indicating a possible connection with the global-scale phenomena.
