  • In this study, a simple, effective, and sensitive method has been developed for the quantitative residue analysis of cyhalofop-butyl and its metabolite cyhalofop acid in water and soil when kept under laboratory conditions. The content of cyholofop-butyl and cyhalofop acid in water and soil was analyzed by first purifying the compounds through liquid-liquid extraction and partitioning followed by Silica gel (adsorption) chromatography. Upon the completion of the purification step the residual levels were monitored through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a UV absorbance detector. The recoveries of cyhalofop-butyl from three replicates spiked at two different concentrations ranged from 82.5 to 100.0% and from 66.7 to 97.9% in water and soil, respectively. The limit of detection and minimum detection level of cyhalofop-butyl in water and soil was 0.02 ppm and 10 ng, respectively. The recoveries of cyhalofop acid ranged from 80.7 to 104.8% in water and from 76.9 to 98.1 % in soil. The limit of detection of cyhalofop acid was 0.005 ppm in water and 0.01 ppm in soil, while the minimum detection level was 2 ng both in water and soil. The half-live of cyhalofop-butyl was 4.14 and 6.6 days in water and soil, respectively. The method was successfully applied to evaluate cyhalofop-butyl residues in water and soil applied aj. 30% emulsion, oil in water (EW) product.

  • The present study was performed to investigate the pre-harvest residue limit (PHRL) of pesticides namely, metalaxyl-M and flusilazole in oriental melon, and to identify the biological half-life and characteristics of their residues. In this study, pesticides were sprayed once as single spray and double spray on oriental melon. The oriental melon samples were collected at 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 days before harvest and samples were extracted with QuEChERS method. The residues of both the pesticides were quantified using GC/NPD and LC/MS/MS. The limit of detection was found to be 0.02 mg/kg and 0.01 mg/kg and their recoveries were greater than 95% (95.7% ~ 103.2% for metalaxyl-M and 100.2% ~ 106.8% for flusilazole) for both pesticides. The biological half-lives of both metalaxyl-M and flusilazole were 12 days at single and double spray, respectively. The PHRL of metalaxyl-M and flusilazole was found 1.0 mg/kg and 0.3 mg/kg, respectively for 10 days before harvest. The results of the present study shows the residual level of both the pesticides metalaxyl-M and flusilazole in oriental melon were less than their maximum residual limits.

  • The purpose of this research was to find out attitudes toward work and leisure in later life and intention to move to senior community available to work among 50's in Pusan, Daegu, and Daejeon. The survey had been conducted in 414 respondents with questionnaire during May to June, 2003. Frequency, Crosstabs, T-test and ANOVA were obtained from the collected data using SPSS/WIN program. The results of this study were as follows. First, most respondents were preparing toward work in later life somewhat actively and the level of preparation differed by individual characteristics. Those who have higher level of education and subjective economic power were more active. The most preferred work item in later life were raising animals and plants, managing institution and training center and running shop. Those who have higher level of education and asset preferred managing institution and training center. Second, nearly three fourths of middle-aged have chosen leisure activities in consideration of later life and two thirds were preparing economically for leisure in later life. They have strong intention to participate in the leisure activity in later life and they also wanted to take part in various kinds of leisure activities. Those who have higher levels of education, subjective economic power, health and asset were more active in preparing leisure in later life. Third, over two thirds preferred to live and work in later life together with others rather than to live and work alone. Nearly half had intention to move to the senior community where work was available. The intention to move were differed by attitudes to work and leisure in later life. Those who were active in work and leisure in later life presented higher intention to move to senior community available work.

  • Objectives More than half of the elders suffer from chronic sleep disturbances. Moreover, sleep disturbances are more prevalent in patients with depressive disorder than in community dwelling elderly. In this study, we aim to estimate the risk factors of poor sleep quality and its effect on quality of life in patients with late life depression. Methods This study included 159 depressive patients aged 65 years or older who completed Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). A global PSQI score of 5 or greater indicates a poor sleeper. Structural diagnostic interviews were performed using the Korean version of Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Depression was evaluated by the Korean form of Geriatric Depression Scale (KGDS). Global cognition was assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination in the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease assessment packet. Quality of life was evaluated by the Korean version of Short-Form 36-Item Health Survey (SF-36). Results The frequencies of poor sleepers were 90.5% in major depressive disorder, 71.8% in minor depressive disorder, 47.1% in subsyndromal depressive disorder, and 73.0% in all types of depressive disorders. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that female [odds ratio (OR) = 2.83, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.20-6.67] and higher KGDS score (OR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.05-1.21) were risk factors of poor sleep quality in patients with late life depression. In the analysis of ANCOVA adjusted for age, gender, education and KGDS score, the mean scores of vitality mental health and mental component summary of SF-36 were lower in poor sleepers than in good sleepers. Conclusions Poor sleepers among patients with late life depression are very common and are associated with female and higher KGDS scores. Poor sleep quality causes a significant negative effect on mental health quality. So researchers and clinicians should be more vigilant in the evaluation and treatment of sleep disturbances in patients with late life depression.

  • Nitric oxide (NO) is a versatile signaling molecule, which is not only involved in plant growth and development but also regulates biological processes in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. Exogenous application of NO regulates the endogenous level of nitric oxide in response to stress conditions and therefore, NO donors are frequently used for stress alleviation. However, NO has very short half-life along with high reactivity. Therefore, conventional NO donors are often disadvantageous due to the relative instability of NO. On the contrary, development of NO releasing nanoparticles is a potential technique for enhancing the availability of NO in plants. Therefore, our aim was to synthesize such potential NO releasing nanoparticles which may be useful for application in agriculture. We have prepared Chitosan encapsulated S-nitrosoglutathione nanoparticles (GSNONP) and tried it with different concentrations for basic research in Arabidopsis thaliana. Our results suggest that lower concentration of this nanoparticle is highly effective for better growth of plants whereas higher concentration produces toxicity that leads to plant death. We observed better growth of Arabidopsis thaliana at 1µM concentration of the GSNONP compared to free GSNO.

  • The drug interaction between probenecid and lithium carbonate was studied pharmacokinetically in rabbits. The blood level and the area under the concentration curve (AUC) of lithium carbonate administered orally were elevated by coadministration of probenecid. Probenecid inhibited the urinary excretion of lithium carbonate in rabbits. Biological half-life and $t_{max}$ of lithium carbonate were prolonged by coadministration of probenecid. From these results, dosage regimen of lithium carbonate is considered to be adjusted for effective and safe therapy in the coadministration of probenecid.
