  • Objectives This clinical study is aimed to examine the effects of herbal medication and pharmacopunture on child with different types of alopecia. Methods 13 year old girl was treated with Hominis placenta pharmacopuncture microneedle therapy system and Ganoderma lucidum pharmacopuncture mesotherapy on the alopecia lesion for 20 months. Herbal medication, meridian pharmacopuncture therapy and physiotherapy were also used to reduce physical symptoms. Results The patient had a relapse of hair loss with changing alopecia types, but eventually alopecia has been resolved and maintained throughout the Korean medicine treatment. Conclusions This study shows the effect of the Korean medical treatments for a pediatric patient with alopecia. And more research is needed to study about patients with different types of alopecia.

  • The use of finasteride for alleviating hair loss has been investigated, and it has been applied as an oral dose medication. However, due to the inconvenience of daily drug administration over long period of time, novel controllable finasteride delivery has been actively investigated. As a novel method of finasteride delivery, the development of finasteride-loaded microspheres for subcutaneous administration is becoming increasingly pharmaceutically important. Therefore, the present study aimed to use finasteride-loaded microspheres in a controlled manner in an attempt to overcome the limitations of the oral administration of finasteride and to cause fewer adverse effects. Finasteride-loaded microspheres containing poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) and finasteride at a ratio of 4:1 were prepared, and a testosterone-induced androgenic alopecia mouse model was used. Following observation for 10 weeks, the percentage hair growth was 86.7% (total hair growth 60%, partial hair growth 26.7%) in the orally-applied finasteride-treated group as a positive control, and 93.3% (total hair growth 60%, partial hair growth 33.3%) in the finasteride-loaded microspheres-treated group. Serum dihydrotestosterone levels began to decrease at week 6 in the orally-applied finasteride- and finasteride-loaded microsphere-treated groups. In addition, the finasteride-loaded microspheres-treated group exhibited similar follicular number, follicular length, anagen/telogen ratio and hair bulb diameter values to those of the orally-applied finasteride-treated group. Furthermore, the finasteride-loaded microspheres increased the activities of phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B and Wnt/β-catenin in relation to hair follicle cell growth signaling in mouse skin, and suppressed the apoptosis of hair follicle cells by reducing the expression of transforming growth factor-β2 and caspase-3, which are indicators of apoptosis. In conclusion, the administration of a single injection of finasteride-loaded microspheres was effective in treating testosterone-induced alopecia. Furthermore, it led to equivalent hair growth effects when compared with orally-applied finasteride, thus revealing the possibility of effective treatment via different routes of administration.

  • Objectives : Seborrheic dermatitis is common abnormal skin condition characterized by flaking and itch. In seborrheic dermatitis, the flakes are greasy and yellowish. Inflammation is also observed. Through this paper we can understand the process of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp and confirm the scalp changes in the treatment process. The purpose of this study was to report the clinical effects of herbal medicine on Seborrheic dermatitis Methods : We employed oriental medical treatments; herbal-medication (Hyeongbangpaedoksangamibang), infant acupuncture, moxibustion and blood therapy. We treated her three times a week. She took medicine three times a day after a meal. During taking medicine, we let her avoid fatty food, flour based food. Her father took a picture the patient's head parts and we compared the symptom with previous symptom. With the picture, we evaluated the patient's scalp condition. Results : After taking treatment, the scalp condition of the patient was much improved. At first, yellowish to reddish scaly pimples appear along the hairline and itching was severe. There were thick and black crusts on the scalp, red, greasy skin covered with flaky white or yellow scales. After that the crusts were fell off and the itching was disappeared during the treatment period. And then the hair loss was occurred. After a year of treatment, scalp condition and hair were back to normal. Conclusion : Herbal medicine (Hyeongbangpaedoksangamibang) with oriental medical treatments was effective in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp and it helped to improve regenerating the scalp condition.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for the development of educational material in Korean for patient3 being discharge after open heart surgery. The subjects were 45 adult patients who were seen in the out -patient department of the thoracic surgery unit of P University hospital between February 1993 and May 1993. The data were collected through a chart review and interview. Nursing needs, and the patients status related to diet, activity, medication, physical and psychoemotional limitations were analyzed. The results are summarized as follows ; 1. Mitral valve replacement was the most frequent type of surgery(91.2%). In most cases, a mechanical valve was used (91.0%) . The duration of admission after the operation was two to four weeks for most of the patients(48.9%). The follow-up period was between one and two years for 28.9% of the patients and below 6 years for all of the patients. 2. Many Patients didn’t know the importance of a low salt diet(57.8%), and did not get any education on low salt diet (66.7%). Gimchi was included as one of the most commonly ingested foods (77.8%). All of the patients indicated nursing needs related to education about low salt diets and further they indicated a major interest in foods that are harmful (57.7%) or foods that are safe(51.1% ). 3. Most patients did not recognize the need for limitations on physical activity(84.4%). Further, 31.1% of them could not return to work at the time of the study. All patients had nursing needs related to physical activity, with the most frequent questions being about the permissble degree of activity and special cautions dictated by their illness (60.0%). 4. Many patients were ignorant of the necessity of medication(55.6%) . Forty percent of the patients were taking additional drugs, usually herb drugs. The time and duration of medication and the side effects of drugs were common concerns (57.7%) related to nursing. needs about medication and were mentioned by all of the patients. 5. All of the patients complained of physical discomfort including the following : memory disturbance(62.2%), weight gain(60.0%), chest tightness (55.6%), hair loss(51.1%), sleep disturbance(46.7%) and other symptoms in that order of frequency. Nursing needs related to physical condition were a concern for all of them. The viability and function of the replaced valve(53.3%) and weight gain(60.0%) were mal or concerns. 6. Looking at their psychoemotional condition it was found that 36 patients(80.0%) were emotionally unstable. The causes were physical discomfort(17 patients), insufficient knowlege of open heart surgery(6 patients), fear of death(6 patients), familial over protection(2 patients ) and lack of support (5 patients).
