Objective : Infection is one of most devastating complications in ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt surgery. Preoperative hair removal has traditionally been performed to reduce infectious complications. We performed VP shunt surgeries and evaluated the prevalence of infection in patients who were shaved and those who were unshaven. Methods : A retrospective analysis was conducted of 82 patients with hydrocephalus of various pathologies who underwent VP shunt surgery, with or without having the head shaved, between March 2010 and March 2017. For patients in the non-shaved group (n=36), absorbable suture materials were used for wound closure, and Nylon sutures or staples were used in the shaved group (n=46). We evaluated the infection outcomes of patients in the two groups. Results : There was no difference in the average age of patients in the two groups. In the non-shaved group, there were no infections, while two patients in the shaved group required revision because of shunt infection. Conclusion : Non-shaved shunt surgery may be safe and effective, with no increase of infection rate. We recommend that shunt procedures could be performed without shaving the hair, which may increase patients' satisfaction without increasing infection risk.
Several heavy metals are known to give some kinds of mental retardation although abnormal X-chromosome is closely connected with genetic disease such as mental retardation. This study dealt with the influence of minerals in the hair of mental retardation people. Minerals were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (Sciex Elan 6100, Perkin-Elmer corporation, Foster, CA, USA). The nutritional elements such as Ca, Na, K were higher level (p<0.01) in normal group than in the mental retardation group. The toxic elements such as Cd (p<0.01) and As were higher level in the mental retardation group than in normal group. But Pb is not significant difference among the all groups including normal group.
This dissertation has been intented to grasp the components of personal colors and classify personal colors. The Method of the study was quasi-experimental. In the experiment to evaluate personal colors, the subjects was 315 male and female college students in Taegu and Kyungbuk area. The evaluations were analyzed by SAS and the methods used were descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, T-test. The results obtained were as follows: First, the major components of subjects personal colors were found to be the colors of skin and hair. Secondly personal colors were classified into three types: warm, cool, and ambiguous. Third types of personal colors tended to be different between men and women.
The fiber morphologies of the textiles from the burials of the Seip group of Ohio Hopewell (ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 500)mounds were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. A theoretical model was proposed which delineates the rate of morphological change in fibers through time and the cultural activities which occur during the life of a textile element. The Seip textiles were categorized according to their visual and structural characteristics. The microscopic examination of the Seip textiles yielded the evidence of animal hair fibers and bast fibers. The animal hair fibers of the seip textiles were identified as the hair of rabbit or hare. The bast fibers of the Seip textiles exhibited variation in morphological features such as the degree of bundle separation and the presence of transverse striations, fibrillations, or trans-verse cracks.
An atomic absorption spectrophotometry analysis study of zinc, cadimium, lead, copper and mercury in human scalp hair samples of 699 subjects in 3 urban and 4 rural communities gave mean values of 170.33/187.00 ppm, 0.18/0.22 ppm, 8.43/8.62 ppm, 9.81/10.24 ppm and 2.13/1.20 ppm for male and female, respectively. The concentration did not differ significantly regardless ages. However, female was higher than male in overall concentration except that of mercury. The percentile methods was partially applied for a reference values of metals in Korean scalp hair to provide more appropriate data for further comparisons.
The effect of oral iron supplementation was assessed on blood iron levels and Pb and Cd levels in erythrocytes, hair and urine of 101 Puchon 5th grade school children with suboptimal iron status. Treatment with 25mg of elemental iron per day for 8weeks resulted in a significant increase in the intake of most nutrients in addition to iron. Iron supplementation resulted in significant improvements in hemoglobin, MU, MCH, MCHC, serum ferritin, serum iron, TIBC, and transferrin saturation of subjects(p<0.05 - p<0.01) and cocomitantly lowered Pb and Cd levels in erythrocytes, hair, and urine(p<0.01). Regression analysis showed that only iron intake contributed to significant increases in hemoglobin and serum ferritin. It seems that 25mg of iron supplementation is safe and adequate to improve iron status in school children with suboptimal iron status and it also has the benefit of alleviating Pb and Cd status. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of MDMA and MDA in hair samples by GC/MS were reported. Hairs were collected from subjects aged 22-37 years, who were suspected of abusing MDMA. After washing with methanol, hair samples were cut into small pieces, extracted with methanol containing 1 percent hydrochloric acid for 20th, and the solution was evaporated. MDMA or MDA in the extract were determined by GC/MS using selected ion monitoring after derivatization with trifluoroacetic anhydride. (omitted)
