  • In many geological investigation, a data sequence may be created which consisted of a succession of mutually exclusive state. However, now our interest lie in the nature of transition from one state to another, rather than in the position of states in the sequence. In this paper, authors studied for the deformation of HAEUNDAE beach by transition matrices and empirical eigenfunction method. In this paper, 5-yr. set of profile data from HAEUNDAE beach measured at several monthly or yearly intervals are analyzed by using the transition matrices and empirical eigen-function. Results of this study indicate that the transition matrices and empirical eigenfunctions are useful in the analysis of beach profile data and provide objective insight in the nature of profile configuration.

  • The sediment transport by waves, wave-induced current and tidal current was calculated using the TRANSPOR2004, then the seasonal sediment budget was analyzed. Also, annual sediment budget was calculated, and sediment circulation patterns was deduced in the broad area including Haeundae beach. A sediment mainly inflows from the east coast of the beach and then moves to the eastward to the Dongback Is, where the 80% of inflow sediment transported to the eastward as a longshore sediment while 20% of them going out to the offshore at the center of the beach. Above results shows a good agreement with the sediment transport trend analysis results by the Gao model.

  • In this study, shoreline change was analyzed by RTK-GPS and advanced airborne LiDAR survey. For extraction of coastline, first of all, tide correction was conducted at all RTK-GPS points through the comparing with the corresponding tidal height, and cross section providing coastline was produced using Autocad Civil3D program. Comparing with two results of RTK-GPS (first, 29 Aug 2007; second, 6 Oct 2007) surveys, coastline of the first result had been decreased about 21m compare with that of the second. And it was also demonstrated that the length of coastline by the first RTK-GPS was 15m shorter than that by the airborne LiDAR survey (Dec. 2006). In addition, we recoquized that the erosion appeared in the top right-hand (dock area); the sediment in the bottom left-hand (Chosun beach area) of the Haeundae beach. As a result, therefore, it was learned that artificial sand filling for beach open and natural effects such as a typhoon, current drift, wind direction gave cause for area changes and coastline.

  • The Gwangalli Beach, one of beaches representative of Busan together with the Haeundae Beach, is a tourist attraction, having increased tourists since the completion of Gwangandaero Bridge in 2003 and recording more than 10 million tourists in 2006. Although the competent local government office has conducted artificial beach nourishment/gravel removal projects every year to manage it, systematic monitoring and studies of erosion are insufficient. This study analyzed the changes in the coastline of Gwangalli Beach using aerial photos, tidal data, GPS survey data for the last sixty years, and examined how the Gwangandaero Bridge, which had been constructed on the Gwanganlli sea, has affected the changes. The results show that the area of Gwangalli Beach has increased 40% for the last sixty years, and that the effects of Gwangandaero Bridge on the coastline are insignificant.

  • Shoreline change due to the littoral drift in Suyeong bay, especially the Gwanganri and Haeundae beaches, was investigated. Average monthly frequency. speed. and direction of winds blowing from between east and south for the last 15 years were analysed, and offshore significant waves were hindcasted using the JONSWAP model. Wave refractions, shoaling, and breaking weir also investigated for the calculation of littoral drift. At the Gwanganri beach major longshore transport of sands occurs from the southwest to the northeast and the shoreline seems to advance in the northeast while it recedes in the southwest. At the Haeundae beach the sands mainly move from the east to the west and the shoreline retreats in the east and advances in the west.

  • An approach for producing a rip current risk index using the rip current likelihood distribution obtained through the FUNWAVE simulations was applied to a rip current forecast system. The approach originally developed for an observation-based real-time rip current warning system was utilized with wave forecast data instead of observations for the rip current forecast system. The availability of the present approach was checked by comparing the observation-based rip current risk index and the wave forecast-based rip current risk index of the Haeundae Beach in 2021.

  • As the power and scale of typhoons are growing due to global warming and socioeconomic damages induced by super-typhoons are increasing, it is important to estimate inundation damages and to prepare proper adaptation plans against an attack of the super-typhoon. In this paper, we estimated the inundation damages of urban area around Haeundae beach induced by super-typhoons which follow the route of Typhoon Maemi with the conditions of Typhoon Vera (Ise Bay in Japan, 1959), Typhoon Durian (Philippine, 2006) and Hurricane Katrina (New Oleans in U.S.A, 2005). The coastal area around the Haeundae beach (Busan and Gyeongnam province) is expectedly damaged by severe storm surges. In this study we calculated the rise of sea level height after harmonizing the different datum levels of land and ocean and estimated the inundation depth, inundation area and the amount of building damages by using airborne LiDAR data and GIS spatial analysis techniques more accurately and quantitatively. As many researchers are predicting that super-typhoon of overwhelming power will occur around the Korean peninsula in the near future, the results of this study are expected to contribute to producing coastal inundation map and evacuation planning.
