  • The study on the sex ratios of natural population of Ixodid ticks in pasture was conducted in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh, from 1988 to June 1990. The samples were collected from the five grazing fields consisting of five different vegetations. Dragging methods were used for the collection of samples. In 24 months of observations a total of 1113 ticks of two different species, Boophilus microplus (670), Haemaphysalis bispinosa (443) were collected and their sex ratio was determined. Females were recorded higher in both B. microplus and H. bispinosa.

  • The study was conducted in the Bangladesh Agricultural University campus, Mymensingh, from July 1988 to June 1990. Five grazing fields consisting of five different vegetations were selected for this study. The specimen were collected from this study. The specimen were collected from the grazing fields by dragging method. The results revealed that two species of ticks namely Boophilus microplus and Haemaphysalis bispinosa were collected from five different vegetation. The highest incidence of both B. microplus and H. bispinosa were recorded during winter season and lowest in Monsoon for the year of 1988-89 and 1989-90. These two species were significantly occurred in Winter followed by Monsoon and Autumn.

Aside these, only 4.62% cattle were found infested with Amblyomma sp. The tick infestation was highest in summer and declined gradually through rainy season to lowest in winter.

The recorded parasites were eight trematodes, two cestodes, fourteen nematodes, two protozoa and two arthropods. The trematodes were Fasciola gigantica (18.9%-46.4%). Paramphistomes (Gigantocotyl explanatum, Ceylonocotyl scoliocoelium, Cotylophoron cotylophorum and Gastrothylax crumenifer (29.5%-48.3%). Schistosoma indicum (1.6%-31.6%), S. spindale (13.9%-27.7%) and S. nasalis (4.6%-8.3%). The cestodes were Hydatid cyst (24.4%), Cysticercus tenuicollis (11.1%). The nematodes were Strongyloides papillosus (14.8%-21.6%), Capillaria spp. (C. bilobata, C. bovis) (8.5%-20.0%), Setaria digitata (7.2%), Onchocerca armillata (27.2%), Thelazia rhodesii (2.3%), Gongylonema pulchrum (3.9%), Oesophagostomum radiatum (6.6%-41.6%), Hookworms (Agriostomum vryburgi, Bunostomum phlebotomum) (8.1%-17.2%), Trichostrongylus axei (11.2%-21.6%), Mecistocirrus digitatus & Haemonchus contortus (15.2%-25.5%) and Toxocara vitulorum (1.1%-9.8%). The protozoa were Eimeria zuerni (2.3%) and Trypanosoma theileri (0.4%). The arthropods were Haemaphysalis bispinosa (8.1%) and Haematopinus tuberculatus (34.6%).

  • Seven cases of canine babesiasis were observed by clinically, hematologically and immunologically in the Kyungbook and Pusan area from May 1961 to October 1963. And a survey was conducted on the rising pups for their babesia, infection in the broken out districts of the disease. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Severe cases of canine babesiasis due to the same agent have been encountered in various breed, of dogs in widely separated location in the Kyungpook and Pusan area. 2. The principal symptoms oserved in infected dogs were severe anemia, weakness, inappetence, moderate fever or subnormal body temperature, increased respiration and pulse, palpitation, icterus, hemogrobinuria and redish yellow defecation. 3. Of hematological findings, decrease in erythrocytes count, hemoglobin content was evident and severe anemic changes occured which were associated with macrocytic anisocytosis. The differential leucocytes counts showed a tendency to increased monocytes and decreased monocytes and decreased basophil. 4. The principal anatomic chabges observed in two cases of infected dogs were severe anemic and icteric changes, markedly enlarged spleen, and enlarged liver with distended gall bladder. 5. Haemaphysalis bispinosa was suspected as being the principal vector of the infection. 6. It was suspected that chronic canine babesiasis would prevailed widely in Kyungpook and Pusan area, and that dogs are raised in such infected environment usually suffer only from the mild, chronic form, which may be practically symptomless, while imported dogs usually suffer from the acute form of the disease.
