  • This paper proposes a new quantitative and objective image quality metric which is essential to verify the performance of block-based DCT image coding. The proposed metric considers not only global distortion of coded image such as spatial frequency sensitivity and channel masking using HVS based multi-channel model, but also structural distortions caused block-based coding. The experimental results show a strong correlation between proposed metric and subjective metric.

  • MPEG-7 standardization work has started with the aims of providing fundamental tools for describing multimedia contents. MPEG-7 defines the syntax and semantics of descriptors and description schemes so that they may be used as fundamental tools for multimedia content description. In this paper, we introduce a texture based image description and retrieval method, which is adopted as the homogeneous texture descriptor in the visual part of the MPEG-7 final committee draft. The current MPEG-7 homogeneous texture descriptor consists of the mean, the standard deviation value of an image, energy, and energy deviation values of Fourier transform of the image. These are extracted from partitioned frequency channels based on the human visual system (HVS). For reliable extraction of the texture descriptor, Radon transformation is employed. This is suitable for HVS behavior. We also introduce various matching methods; for example, intensity-invariant, rotation-invariant and/or scale-invariant matching. This technique retrieves relevant texture images when the user gives a querying texture image. In order to show the promising performance of the texture descriptor, we take the experimental results with the MPEG-7 test sets. Experimental results show that the MPEG-7 texture descriptor gives an efficient and effective retrieval rate. Furthermore, it gives fast feature extraction time for constructing the texture descriptor.

  • In this paper, we propose a Progressive scalable video coding algorithm using frequency weighting in the DCT domain. Since the human visual system (HVS) can be modeled as a nonlinear point transformation, called the modulation transfer function (MTF), we tan use the frequency weighting matrix to enhance the video image quality. We change this frequency weighting matrix into the frequency shift matrix to apply to the bit-plane coding method for the fine granular scalable (FGS) video coding We also define a new error metric JNDE (just noticeable difference) to measure the perceptual image quality in terms of human vision.

  • The rapid progress of the software has enabled individuals to copy and remark digital contents, which was only done by professionals. As a solution for the problems, contents producer needs to have certification and inspection of its contents and hold the proprietary right. A fragile watermarking method is able to detect the distortion and damage of watermarked image, but the watermark is also fragile on standardized image compression. That is the problem of fragile watermarking technique. We propose semi-fragile watermarking technique that is robust in the image processing such as JPEG compression used on computer, but it is fragile on the addition of noise and other attacks. In the proposed method, we can generate the watermarks of an image from the relationship between two block coefficients, also the generated watermark is inserted into insensible part of HVS(Human Visual System) after processing DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) and using quantization. As a result, on the spatial domain, high detection of distortion has been possible even in slight changes, and could detect the corrupted blocks on image. Therefore, it is simple to judge the pixels at which some location has been changed in the space.

  • This paper proposes a novel bit allocation algorithm for H.264 scalable extension(SE) based on a human visual system (HVS) to improve the coding efficiency. The proposed algorithm is consist of two stages: visual weighting model and visual weighting-based bit allocation algorithm. In the first stage, the visual weighting for each macroblock (MB) is analyzed according to the region of interests. Then the adaptation of the visual weighting into the bit allocation routine for each quality layer is performed for improving the visual quality. In the simulation results, it is observed that the proposed scheme can improve the subjective and objective video quality in the same bit rate, compared to the previous scalable video coding in H.264.

  • In this paper, we proposed a HVS(human visual system) model-based digital image watermarking which is not only invariant to rotation and translation but also more robust to lossy compression, cropping, and scaling as compared to the conventional method. Fourier transform and log-polar mapping is used to make the proposed algorithm invariant to rotation and translation, and in addition, watermark energy is embedded maximally based on spatial frequency sensitivity of HVS without the deterioration of the invisibility. As a result, the robustness of watermarking is improved both in general image processing operations such as cropping, low pass filtering, and lossy compression and in geometrical transforms such as rotation, translation, and scaling. And, by disjoint embedding of the watermark and the template without intersection, the deterioration of invisibility and robustness is prevented. Experimental results show that proposed watermarking is about 30~75 [%] more robust af compared to the conventional methods.

  • Until now, a lot of image quality assessment techniques or tools for optimal human visual system(HVS)-awareness have been researched and SSIM(Structural SIMilarity) and its improved techniques are representative examples. However, they often cannot cope with various images and different distortion types robustly, and thus this can cause a large gap between their index values and HVS-awareness. In this paper, we conduct image quality assessment on SSIM and its variants intensively and analyze the causes of each component function's observed anomalies. Then, we propose a novel image quality assessment technique to compensate and improve such anomalies. Additionally, through extensive image assessment simulations, we show that the proposed technique can indicate HVS-awareness more robustly and consistently than SSIM and its variants for various images and different distortion types.
