  • The Korean government announced the "1st Basic Plan for the Transition to Hydrogen Economy" in 2021 and declared the establishment of a hydrogen industry ecosystem by 2040. To build a low-carbon power system, resources that can efficiently accommodate renewable energy are required, and green hydrogen is considered a potential solution. This study analyzed the economic feasibility of green hydrogen-based sector coupling to reduce curtailment of renewable generation in the Jeju power system by 2025 under the scenario of with or without HVDC#3. The result showed that HVDC#3 significantly reduced the frequency of curtailment from 16.1% to 3.0%. In addition, green hydrogen-based sector coupling was an economically feasible option as result showed an IRR of 4.86% when HVDC#3 was connected and 11.45% when it was not under the condition of achieving 50% curtailment reduction. This study shows that the higher the level of renewable energy deployment, the more delayed the HVDC connection between Jeju and the main land, and the lower the SMP, the more economically feasible the green hydrogen-based sector coupling is. Furthermore, this study suggests that the policy goal of completely reducing curtailment is not economically efficient.

  • Detection and localization of partial discharge are considered critical techniques for estimating the lifetimes of power cables. High-frequency current transformers (HFCTs) are commonly used for the detection of partial discharge in high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) power cables; however, their applicability is compromised by the limitations of the installation locations. HFCTs are typically installed in cable terminals or insulation joint boxes because HVACs induce strong time-varying magnetic fields around the cables, saturating the ferromagnetic materials in the HFCTs. Therefore, partial discharges near the installation locations can be detected. In this study, the feasibility of partial discharge detection using a HFCT was investigated for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables. We demonstrated that the HFCT could be installed at any location in the HVDC power cable to monitor partial discharge along the entire cable length. Furthermore, we showed that the HFCT could detect the location of partial discharge with high accuracy.

  • This paper proposes a 36-pulse back-to-back voltage source converter using four sets of 12-pulse bridges with pulse-Interleaving auxiliary circuit. The proposed back-to-back voltage source converter has an independent control capability of active power and reactive power at the at connection point. The principle of increasing the number of pulses was analyzed using theoretical approach. The operational feasibility of proposed system was verified through computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software. The proposed back-to-back converter can be widely used for the HVDC and FACTS devices.

  • This paper proposes a 18-step back-to-back voltage source converter using four sets of 3-Level converter module with auxiliary circuit to increase the number of steps. The proposed back-to-back voltage source converter has an independent control capability of active power and reactive power at the interconnected ac system. The operational feasibility of proposed system was verified through computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software. The feasibility of hardware implementation was verified through experimental results with a scaled hardware model. The proposed back-to-back converter can be widely applied for interconnecting the renewable energy source to the power grid.

  • Developing the offshore wind farm is essential to meet the national target of the renewable energy and to achieve the green growth in Korea. In this context, KEPRI is now carrying the feasibility study for introducing the offshore wind fam in Korea. Accordingly, it is required to formulate an appropriate strategy, this paper mainly discuss, for this goal. First of all, several preliminary sites for the offshore wind farm are selected based on the evaluation criteria presented herein. In addition, the domestic sub-technological level of key technology sectors associated with the offshore wind power is analyzed. It includes the industries related to wind turbine, grid integration, structural design and construction. Integrating these results, we propose a strategy in order to successfully develop the first offshore wind farm more than 100-MW class in the south-western sea area of Korea.
