  • More than 7 million people use the Seoul metropolitan subway network daily. This number tends to increase due to the increase of oil price. Indoor air quality of electrical multiple unit (EMU) is strongly affected by outdoor air quality, however, indoor thermal comfort is subjected to heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system of EMU. In general, air temperature, humidity, air velocity, surface temperature, and illumination are key parameters affecting thermal comfort of passenger. It is known that the well-designed HVAC system should improve the thermal comfort of passengers and should increase the energy efficiency of HVAC system also. In this study, we analyzed the thermal comfort of advanced EMU developed by Korea Railroad Research Institute by using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in order to find the optimum HVAC system which can improve thermal comfort of passengers with a minimal energy use.

A Study on the Duct Design of HVAC System Using the Equal Friction Method and the T-method (등압법과 T-method를 이용한 공조시스템 배관 설계에 관한 연구)

  • Optimal duct design of a HVAC system requires analysis technology to accurately evaluate its pressure losses, flow rate and velocity for making a compromised design among fan capacity and duct size affecting initial manufacturing and operation costs, and noise induced by the HVAC system. In this paper, we carry out initial duct design using the equal friction method. Using the result, the T-method is applied for accurate analysis of flow rate. Then, the duct size is modified using the difference between the required and the calculated flow rate, which can guarantee required flow rate, reduce the pressure unbalance among duct paths and lead to select optimal fan performance. To verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed design method, an example for HVAC system design including noise analysis is demonstrated.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the method to determine the optimal stop time of HVAC using Artificial Neural Network model, one of the learning methods. For this, the performance of determining the stop time of HVAC for unexperienced learning data was evaluated, and time interval for measurement of input data and permissible error needed for practical application of ANN model were presented using the results of daily simulation.

  • 본 논문은 HVAC(heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) 시스템에 대하여 Multi Fuzzy 제어기 설계를 제안한다. HVAC 시스템은 Compressor(압축기), Condenser(응축기), Evaporator(증발기), Expansion Valve 로 구성되며, 각각의 기기에 대한 제어가 독립적으로 이루여져 있다. 기존의 제어가 한 제어기를 사용한 단일방식으로 이루어지다보니 HVAC 시스템의 특성인 냉매의 상태가 달라지면 시스템 전반적으로 그 영향이 파급되는 부분까지 고려를 해 주지 못하고, 제어기의 성능이 효율적이지 못했다. 본 논문에서는 비선형성이 강하고 불확실하며 복잡한 시스템을 쉽게 제어할 수 있는 Fuzzy 제어기를 구성하여 Expansion Valve 와 Compressor 에서 동시에 제어하는 Multi 제어기를 설계한다. 제안된 Multi Fuzzy 제어기는 HVAC 시스템의 효율성과 안정성에 기초하여, 과열도와 저압을 제어한다.

The Proposal of a Quantitative Evaluation Method on Mixing Loss in the HVAC System Design (공기조화설비(HVAC) 설계시 혼합손실의 정량적 평가방안의 제안)

  • It is a serious subject for energy conservation to prevent the energy loss caused by mixing of heated and cooled air jets in a building which two types of air-conditioning systems are adopted in perimeter and interior zone. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the quantitative and qualitative mechanisms of the mixing loss and to propose preventive methods for it. In this paper, by using the dynamic heat load calculation method, heat extraction loads of a typical office building in Pusan are calculated. According to the results, numerical simulation based on the computational fluid dynamics were peformed in order to measure the mixing loss in physical size HVAC system. Then, the distributions of air temperature and velocity are analyzed in order to grasp the relations by setting temperature differences influence on the mixing loss.

  • In this study, we identify contribution of structure-borne-noise of vehicle HVAC system using Multi-Dimensional spectral analysis (MDSA) method. Firstly, to identify the applicability of MDSA method, the case of HVAC system was modeled with four input / single output system. The four inputs which is given vibration data is composed of blower, evaporator, heater and duct. The single output is noise data from driver's seat. When the blower motor is operating, we analyze the contributions of four input / single output. As a result of experiment, we identify efficiency of systems modeled with four input / single output through ordinary coherence function (OCF) and multiple coherence function (MCF).

Application Study of Reinforcement Learning Control for Building HVAC System

  • Recently, a technology based on the proportional integral (PI) control have grown rapidly owing to the needs for the robust capacity of the controllers from industrial building sectors. However, PI controller generally requires tuning of gains for optimal control when the outside weather condition changes. The present study presents the possibility of reinforcement learning (RL) control algorithm with PI controller adapted in the HVAC system. The optimal design criteria of RL controller was proposed in the environment chamber experiment and a theoretical analysis was also conducted using TRNSYS program.
