  • This paper presents the construction and test results of an HTS induction motor. End rings and short bars were made of HTS tapes, To increase the efficiency and starting torque, HTS tapes can be used as the rotor bars. Because large current is induced in the rotor circuit, HTS tapes quench and high starting torque can be obtained. As the speed of rotor builds up. HTS tapes which are used as short bars become superconducting state again. After the HTS tapes recover from quench, resistance of the rotor circuit is nearly zero. In that case, power loss in rotor circuit is eliminated. Stator of the conventional induction motor was used as the stator of the HTS motor. Rated capacity of the conventional motor was 0.75 kW. Performances of the HTS induction motor were compared with those of the conventional motor with same volume and specification. Test result showed that the speeds of the HTS induction motor were the same with synchronous speed up to 2.6 Nm and 1.788 rpm at 9.7 Nm. It guarantees the high efficiency of the HTS motor. Starting torque of the HTS motor was more than twice of the conventional motor.

  • Motors with HTS wires or bulks have been developing recently. Those are large synchronous motor with HTS wires at the field winding in the rotor, hysteresis and reluctance motors with HTS bulk in the rotor. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of an HTS induction motor. Conventional end rings and short bars were replaced with HTS wires in the motor. Stator of the conventional induction motor was used as the stator of the HTS motor. Rated capacity and rpm at full rotor of the conventional motor were 0.75[kW] and 1,710[rpm]. Two, HTS wires are used in parallel to make the end rings and bars. The critical current of the BSCCO-2223 HTS wire which was used in the bars and end rings were 115[A]. Electrodynamometer was coupled directly to the shaft of the rotor with HTS wires.

  • The high temperature superconducting bulk can be used as the rotor of an ac motor. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of a ac motor with HTS bulk rotor. The rotor of a conventional squirrel cage induction motor was replaced with cylinder type YBCO bulk. Height and outer diameter of the HTS bulk was 15mm and 46mm, respectively. Eddy current brake using aluminium disk was used to measure the torque of the HTS motor. No load test, locked rotor test and load test were performed to examine the characteristics of the HTS motor. Test results show the motor can rotate at synchronous speed without any special starting circuit. Maximum output power of the constructed HTS motor was 408W.

  • The superconducting motor shows several advantages such as smaller size and higher efficiency against conventional motor especially utilized in ship propulsion application. However, this size reduction merit appears in large capacity more than several MW. We are going to develop a 5MW class synchronous motor with rotating High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) coil. that is aimed to be utilized for ship propulsion so it has very low-speed, The ship propulsion motor must generate very high electromagnetic torque instead of low-speed. Therefore. the rotor (field) coils need very large magnetic flux that results in large amount of expensive HTS conductor for the field coil. In this paper a 5MW HTS motor for ship propulsion is considered to be designed with construction cost reduced via HTS field coil cost reduction because HTS conductor cost is critical factor in the construction cost of HTS motor. In order to reduce the HTS conductor amount. iron-cored rotor types are considered. so several cases with iron-core are compared one another and with an air-core case.

  • Recently, as the interests in the electrical propulsion ship increase, it is needed to prepare for the technical demand of the versatile HTS synchronous motor, the noble paradigm of the electrical motor. In this paper, the electrical propulsion apparatus was classified at first. The, the merits and demerits of the HTS synchronous motor were investigated. Finally, the feasibility study of development of the HTS motor was performed with electromagnetic FEM analysis. Additionally, the points to be considered in decision of the capacity or number of the HTS motor and the way to supply electricity were studied in this paper. This work would be very useful in establishing the development direction of the HTS motor

  • Conventional electric motors are not suitable for aircraft because of their large size and weight. High-temperature superconducting (HTS) motors have high current density, high magnetic field density, and low loss, so they can significantly reduce the size and weight compared to general electric motors. This paper presents the conceptual design and analysis results of HTS motors for electric propulsion in future aircraft. A 2.5 MW HTS motor with a rotational speed of 7,200 RPM was designed and the specific power (kW/kg) was analyzed. The operating temperature of the field coil of the HTS motor is 20K in consideration of LH2 cooling. The stator winding were connected in a multi-phase configuration and Litz wires were used to minimize eddy current losses. As a result, it was confirmed that the specific power of the motor is about 18.67 kW/kg, which is much higher than that of the conventional electric motor.

  • The high temperature superconducting bulk can be used as the bearing of induction motors. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of an induction motor with superconducting bearings using HTS bulks. The bearing had eight hexahedron type YBCO bulks. Height, width and thickness of the HTS bulk were 30mm, 30mm and 10mm, respectively. Single phase induction motor was used to drive the shaft made of aluminum and the rotor of a conventional induction motor. To estimate the performance of the HTS bulk magnetic bearing, no load test, load test and Impact test were carried out. Load tests were performed by using air resistance caused by the shaft-mounted thin cylinder with buckets. Impact tests by axial direction and vertical direction impact showed that the vibration of the shaft gradually decayed. The induction motor with HTS bulk magnetic bearing rotated silently and smoothly throughout the tests. According to the test results, conventional bearings can be replaced with superconducting magnetic bearings made of HTS bulks.

  • Conventional direct current (DC) rotating machines are usually used for crane and press machine using high torque in metal and steel industries, because of a constant output power along variable rotating speed. A general DC motor with permanent field magnets could not increase a magnetic flux density at a gap between armature coils and field magnets. However, a superconducting DC motor has field magnets composed with high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils and it could increase the magnetic flux density at the gap to over 10 times than those of a general DC motor by control the excitation current into HTS coils. The superconducting DC motor could be operated with extremely high torque and constant output power at a low rotational speed. In this paper, a 500 W superconducting DC rotating machine was conceptually designed with a LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen) cooling method and the operation characteristics results of HTS field magnets were presented. The two no-insulation HTS magnets for a 500 W superconducting DC rotating machine were fabricated. The excitation current for the HTS magnets could be controlled from 0 to 40 A. This test results will be available to design large-sized HTS magnets for a number of hundred kW class superconducting DC rotating machine under LN2 cooling system.

  • In general, in most case of high temperature superconducting (HTS) rotating machinery, HTS field coil is rotated. HTS homopolar motor field coil is nat necessary to be rotated and the torque of motor is not strongly related with the field coil. Therefore, HTS homopolar motor has a superior mechanical stability comparing with other HTS rotating machines. These advantages can make the design of HTS field coil and cryostat much more simple. In this paper, HTS field coil was fabricated and tested. Before test, authors habe estimated the critical current of HTS field coil at 77K by simulation using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software and power law equation. The experiment details and results are presented in this paper, and discussed. The field windings are made with HTS Bi-2223 wire which operates at 77K.
