Power cables made of high temperature superconductors (HTS) are considered as most advanced applications of superconductivity for electro-energetics. Several cables made of the First Generation (1G) HTS wires have been produced and installed to electrical grids worldwide. Power cables made of the Second Generation HTS wires (2G or Coated Conductors) are in active development. Most basic principles of HTS power cables development have been published in many works since 90-ties. In this Review we would like to present our new developments mostly directed to 2G HTS compact power cables. We are presenting the methods to optimize a design of 2G AC compact power cable providing uniform current distribution among cable layers and the production technology approaches to implement such a design. AC losses measurements in such cables and other test methods are described. Some problems of the development 2G HTS power cables with small diameters are discussed. We presented as examples designs, developments and test results of two major coaxial cables designs: single-phase (cable core and a shield) and three-phase (triaxial: with three coaxial phases).

The prototype high-T$_c$ superconducting (HTS) power transmission cables have been designed and fabricated multi layers of spirally wound HTS tapes. The cables were made Bi-2223 based Ag-sheathed HTS tapes, and tested in LN$_2$. Critical currents of 700A dc and better were achieved. The magnetic flux density and field direction were analyzed in the cable configuration. In this paper the results of analysis and tests of HTS power transmission cables were described.
It becomes difficult and high in cost to construct new ducts and/or tunnels for power cables in metropolitan areas. This paper presents possible applications of an HTS superconducting power cables for transmitting electric power in metropolitan areas. Reflected were its important distinction such as compactness for installation in underground ducts and considerably high efficiency compared with present underground cables. In this paper, system modeling, transmission capacity and voltage class of compact HTS cables which should be applied to existing ducts were reviewed. Based on this, the following items on urban transmission system are examined. (1) A method of constructing a model system to introduce high temperature superconducting cables to metropolitan areas is presented. (2)The maximum outer diameter of HTS cables to be accommodated in exiting ducts is calculated based on the design standards for current cable ducts. (3)The voltage level that can be accommodated by existing ducts is examined.

It becomes difficult and high in cost to construct new ducts and/or tunnels for power cables in domestic areas. This paper presents possible strategy of an HTS distribution cables for distributing electric power in local areas as niche marketing. Reflected were its important distinction such as system configuration, rationale, establishment of strategy and considerably high economical efficiency compared with present underground cables. In this paper, applicable important items by using HTS distribution cables in water pumping powerhouse and distribution substation as example objective regions were reviewed. Based on this, the following items on distribution HTS system are examined. (I)A review of constructing a model system to introduce high temperature superconducting distribution cables to objective areas is presented. (2)The strategy to capture HTS distribution cable in water pumping powerhouse and distribution substation as niche marketing regions were reviewed. (3)In concrete, system configuration, rationale, establishment of strategy and considerably high economical efficiency are reviewed between existing cable and HTS one.
High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) power cables are capable of transmitting bulk power without any loss compared to conventional copper cables. The major challenge in the design of such HTS cables is the high stresses (electro-thermal/electro-mechanical) developed at high voltages, high currents and cryogenic temperatures. The safe and reliable operation of HTS cables involves lots of instrumentation for monitoring, measurement, control and safe operation. In principle, a four probe method for resistance (RTD PT-100) is used for temperature measurements at various locations of HTS cable. The number of connecting leads required for this is four times that of the number of sensors. The present paper discusses a novel way of connecting 128 RTD sensors with the help of only 14 leads using a cold electronics based multiplexer board. LabVIEW 11.0 software was used for interfacing and displaying the readings of all the sensors on computer screen.

In this study, we performed long lange power transmission expansion planning for conceptual design of HTS power cable in Seoul area. Since the HTS power cable has the high power transmission density and low loss characteristics in comparison with conventional power cables, the HTS power cable is introduced between the downtown and the suburbs in the future system in order to verify the feasibility of the HTS power transmission cables technically and to encourage the research activity in the area.

Cryogenic systems is requirement for the operation of HTS power cables. In general, HTS power cables require temperature below 77K, a temperature that can be achieved from the liquid nitrogen or sub-cooled LN2. HTS power cable is needed for sufficient refrigeration to overcome its low temperature heat loading. This loading typically comes in two forms : (1) heat leaks from the surroundings and (2) internal heat generation. This paper is a explanation for the cooling test of 10m HTS power cable.
Cryogenic systems are requirement for the operation of HTS power cables. In general, HTS power cables require temperature below 77K, a temperature that can be achieved from the liquid nitrogen at latm or sub-cooled LN2 above latm. HTS power cable needs sufficient refrigeration to overcome its low temperature heat loading. This loading typically cones in two forms : (1) heat leaks from the surroundings and (2) internal heat generation. This paper explains the cooling test system of 10m HTS power cable. This system is composed of storage dewar, auto fill system, core cryostat and cold-box. Storage dewar is a LN2 storage tank and auto fill system is a LN2 supply device to the sub-cooler, Core cryostat is a LN2 flow line. Cold box is a control unit of temperature and flow rate. It is composed of control valve, flow meter, sub-cooler and circulation pump, etc..
Recently, interest in renewable energy such as solar and wind power has increased as an alternative to fossil fuels. Renewable energy sources such as large wind farms require long-distance power transmission because they are located inland or offshore, far from the city where power is required. High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) power cables have more than 5 times the transmission capacity and less than one-tenth the transmission loss compared to the existing cables of the same size, enabling large-capacity transmission at low voltage. For commercialization of HTS power cables, unmanned operation and long-distance cooling technology of several kilometers is essential, and pressure drop characteristic is important. The cryostat's spiral corrugation tube is easier to bend, but unlike the round tube, the pressure drop cannot be calculated using the Moody chart. In addition, it is more difficult to predict the pressure drop characteristics due to the irregular surface roughness of the binder wound around the cable core. In this paper, a CFD model of a spiral corrugation tube with a core was designed by referring to the water experiments from previous studies. In the four cases geometry, when the surface roughness of the core was 10mm, most errors were 15% and the maximum errors were 23%. These results will be used as a reference for the design of long-distance HTS power cables.
With the continuous performance improvement and commercialization of HTS wires, there have been many efforts to commercialize HTS power cables recently. Unlike conventional power cables, a cryogenic cooling system is required for a HTS power cable and a cryogenic pump is one of the essential components to circulate subcooled liquid nitrogen and cool the HTS power cable. Especially, the development of a reliable and high-efficiency cryogenic pump is an important issue for the commercialization of HTS power cables of several kilometers or more. In this study, we designed and fabricated a cryogenic pump for subcooled liquid nitrogen with a mass flow rate of 1.2 kg/s, a differential pressure of 5 bar, and evaluated the hydraulic performance of the pump. Impeller design was conducted to meet the target design performance with 1 D analysis model and CFD analysis. The pump performance parameters such as pressure heads, mass flow rates, and efficiencies in accordance with rotating speeds were assessed using a laboratory's performance evaluation system.
