A superconductor flywheel energy storage(SFES) system is mainly act an electro-mechanical battery which transfers mechanical energy into electrical form and vice versa. SFES system consists of a pair of non-contacting High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) bearings with a very low frictional loss. But it is essential to design an efficient HTS bearing considering with rotor dynamic properties through correct calculation of stiffness in order to support a huge composite flywheel rotor with high energy storage density. Static properties of HTS bearings provide data to solve problems which may occur easily in a running system. Since stiffness to counter vibration is the main parameter in designing an HTS bearing system, we investigate HTS bearing magnetic force through static properties between the Permanent Magnet(PM) and HTS. We measured axial / radial stiffness and found bearing stiffness can be easily changed by activated vibration direction between PM and HTS bulk. These results are used to determine the optimal design for a 10 kWh SFES.
We are developing a small-sized high temperature superconducting magnetic energy storage (HTS-SMES) magnet with the nominal storage capacity of 600 kJ, which provides electric power with high quality to sensitive electric loads. Critical current and N-value of a high temperature superconductor with large current, which was selected for the development of the 600 kJ HTS-SMES magnet, were investigated in various oblique external magnetic fields. Based on the critical current and N-value measured for the short sample conductor, we discussed the DC V - I characteristic of a model coil fabricated with the same conductor of 500 m. The results show that the measured critical current and N-value of the conductor for parallel field are constant in external magnetic fields less than about 0.2 T. However, for oblique fields, its critical current and N -value abruptly decrease in all external magnetic fields. Moreover, the measured critical current of the model coil well agrees with the numerically calculated one based on the DC V - I characteristic measured for the short sample conductor. This suggest that losses and critical currents for an HTS-SMES magnet made up of a high temperature superconductor with anisotropic characteristic are predictable from the data of a short sample conductor.
To reduce the fault current below the current capacity of a circuit breaker, researches on HTS (High Temperature Superconductor) power cables with fault current limiting (FCL) function are increasing. An FCL HTS power cable transports current with low a impedance during normal operation. Yet, it limits the fault current by an increased inductive or resistive impedance of conducting layer when quench occurs at the FCL HTS power cable by the large fault current. An inductive type FCL HTS power cable uses increased inductive impendence caused by leakage magnetic flux outside the cable core when the quench occurs at a shield layer losing the magnetic shielding effect. Therefore, it has an advantage of less resistive heating than resistive type FCL HTS power cable and temperature increase is suppressed. This paper describes an ideal circuit model for the FCL HTS power cable to investigate the effectiveness of increased inductive impedance when quench occurs at the shield layer. Then, FEM analysis is presented with a simplified model cable composed of various iron yokes to investigate the effect of the shape of yoke on the generation of the inductive impedance.
A high-temperature superconductor (HTS) journal bearing was studied for loss. Two HTS bearings support the rotor at top and bottom. The rotor weight is 4 kg and the length is about 300 mm. Both the top and bottom bearings have two permanent magnet (PM) rings with an iron pole piece separating them. Each HTS journal bearing is composed of six pieces of superconductor blocks of size 35$\times$25$\times$10 mm. The HTS blocks are encased in a cryochamber through which liquid nitrogen flows. The inner spool of the cryochamber is made from G-10 to reduce eddy current loss, and the rest of the cryochamber is stainless steel. The magnetic field from the PM rings < 10 mT on the stainless part. The rotational drag was measured over the same speed range. Results indicate that the 10 mT design criteria for magnetic field on the stainless part of the cryochamber is too high.
The optimum cross-sectional area profile of gas-cooled high-temperature superconductor(HTS) current lead is analyzed to have minimum helium boil-off rate. The conventional constant area HTS lead has much higher helium consumption than the optimum HTS lead considered in this study. The optimum HTS lead has variable cross-sectional area to have constant satiety factor. An analytical formula of optimum shape of lead and temperature profile are obtained. For multi-stacking HTS current leads, the optimum tape lengths and minimum heat dissipation rate are also formulated. The developed formulations are applied to the Bi-2223 material, and the differences between constant area, constant safety-factor, and multi-stacking current leads are discussed.
Superconductor is developed for applications in high-power devices such as power-transmission cables, transformers, motor and generators. In such applications, HTS tapes are subjected to various kinds of stress or strain. In the fabrication of the devices, the critical current (Ic) of the high temperature superconductor degrades due to many reasons including the tension applied by bending, twist and thermal contraction. In particular manufactured HTS cable, we need pitch angle controls. This paper is analyzed that Ic characteristics is changed pitch angle of HTS tape. These results will amount the most important basis data in HTS cable.
A superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system has shorter response time and longer life time, and is more economical, and environment-friendly than other uninterruptible power supply (UPS). A conduction cooling system is well answer for the high temperature superconductor (HTS) SMES system. Because the conduction cooling system is simple, light and small structure. The purpose of this paper is to design and verify the effective conduction cooling system for the HTS SMES system. The analysis of heat loads in cryostat is performed. Thermal shield heat loads, temperatures of HTS coil surface and conduction Cu plate are estimated and measured.
In this paper we calculate the AC Loss in the superconducting slab carrying ac transport current. Magnetic diffusion equation for computation of the electric field and current distribution are based on Maxwell's equations and non-linear constitutive equation. The E-J characteristics of superconductor are applied to computation. We will present the result of the high-temperature superconductor case comparison with the slab of low temperature superconductor.

A Josephson sampler circuit using high-Tc superconductor (HTS) ramp-edge junctions has been designed, fabricated, and experimentally tested. It consists of five ramp-edge junctions with a stacked groundplane and is based on single-flux-quantum (SFQ) operations. The sampler was used to measure current waveforms at picosecond and microampere resolutions. We are developing a system based on the sampler for measuring the current waveform in a room-temperature sample. And measuring current flowing through wiring in a semiconductor large-scale integrated circuit is a promising application for the HTS sampler system.
