  • This paper presents a method for hand segmentation using depth information, and adaptive threshold by means of histogram analysis and color clustering in HSV color model. We consider hand area as a nearer object to the camera than background on depth information. And the threshold of hand color is adaptively determined by clustering using the matching of color values on the input image with one of the regions of hue histogram. Experimental results demonstrate 95% accuracy rate. Thus, we confirmed that the proposed method is effective for hand segmentation in variations of hand color, scale, rotation, pose, different lightning conditions and any colored background.

  • In this paper, we present a non-static color histogram method to retrieve clothing images that are similar to a query clothing. Given clothing area, our method automatically extracts major colors by using the octree-based quantization approach[16]. Then, a color palette that is composed of the major colors is generated. The feature of each clothing, which can be either a query or a database clothing image, is represented as a color histogram based on its color palette. We define the match color bins between two possibly different color palettes, and unify the color palettes by merging or deleting some color bins if necessary. The similarity between two histograms is measured by using the weighted Euclidean distance between the match color bins, where the weight is derived from the frequency of each bin. We compare our method with previous histogram matching methods through experiments. Compared to HSV cumulative histogram-based approach, our method improves the retrieval precision by 13.7 % with less number of color bins.

  • Since digital images and videos are rapidly increasing in the internet with the spread of mobile computers and smartphones, research on image retrieval has gained tremendous momentum. Color, shape, and texture are major features used in image retrieval. Especially, color information has been widely used in image retrieval, because it is robust in translation, rotation, and a small change of camera view. This paper proposes a new method for histogram refinement based on local color difference. Firstly, the proposed method converts a RGB color image into a HSV color image. Secondly, it reduces the size of color space from 2563 to 32. It classifies pixels in the 32-color image into three groups according to the color difference between a central pixel and its neighbors in a 3x3 local region. Finally, it makes a color difference vector(CDV) representing three refined color histograms, then image retrieval is performed by the CDV matching. The experimental results using public image database show that the proposed method has higher retrieval accuracy than other conventional ones. They also show that the proposed method can be effectively applied to search low resolution images such as thumbnail images.

  • For an effective pre-treatment process of a face input image, it is necessary to detect each of face components, calculate the face area, and estimate the rotary angle of the face. A proposed method of this study can estimate an robust result under such renditions as some different levels of illumination, variable fate sizes, fate rotation angels, and background color similar to skin color of the face. The first step of the proposed method detects the estimated face area that can be calculated by both adapted skin color Information of the band-wide HSV color coordinate converted from RGB coordinate, and skin color Information using histogram. Using the results of the former processes, we can detect a lip area within an estimated face area. After estimating a rotary angle slope of the lip area along the X axis, the method determines the face shape based on face information. After detecting eyes in face area by matching a partial template which is made with both eyes, we can estimate Y axis rotary angle by calculating the eye´s locations in three dimensional space in the reference of the face area. As a result of the experiment on various face images, the effectuality of proposed algorithm was verified.

  • This paper presents an effective pattern classification model by designing an artificial neural network based pattern classifiers for face recognition. First, a RGB image inputted from a frame grabber is converted into a HSV image which is similar to the human beings' vision system. Then, the coarse facial region is extracted using the hue(H) and saturation(S) components except intensity(V) component which is sensitive to the environmental illumination. Next, the fine facial region extraction process is performed by matching with the edge and gray based templates. To make a light-invariant and qualified facial image, histogram equalization and intensity compensation processing using illumination plane are performed. The finally extracted and enhanced facial images are used for training the pattern classification models. The proposed H-ART2 model which has the hierarchical ART2 layers and F-LVQ model which is optimized by fuzzy membership make it possible to classify facial patterns by optimizing relations of clusters and searching clustered reference patterns effectively. Experimental results show that the proposed face recognition system is as good as the SVM model which is famous for face recognition field in recognition rate and even better in classification speed. Moreover high recognition rate could be acquired by combining the proposed neural classification models.
