  • In general, the braking system of high speed train has an important role for the safety of the train. To stop safely the train at its pre-decided position, it is necessary to combine properly the various brakes. Korean high speed train (HSR 350x) has adopted a combined electric and mechanic (friction) braking system. Electric brakes are consist of rheostatic brake, regenerative brake and eddy current brake and mechanical brakes are composed of disc brake, wheel disc brake and tread brake. In this paper, the measuring method that can take a measurement of the braking forces for disc brake and wheel disc brake has been suggested and we have verified that this method is valid through on-line test of HSR 350x.

  • In this paper, we introduce the characteristics of ride comfort for KTX(Korea Train express) and HSR 350(Korea High Speed Train project). The concept of term "ride comfort" is equivocal. Generally it is defined as the vehicle vibration. There are many studies on evaluation method of ride comfort for railway. In the case of KTX, the ride comfort has been evaluated according to ISO 2631 standard. But the ride comfort for HSR 350 has been assessed by UIC 513R. We have reviewed the ride comfort for KTX and HSR 350 by same method, such as ISO 2631 and UIC 513R, and compared the result of KTX with that of HSR 350.

  • Magnitude of generated harmonic currents along with the operation of AC traction has nonlinear characteristics, and generated harmonic currents for high speed traction are more and more in high speed railroad(HSR) systems, especially. This paper presents probabilistic approximation method for the harmonic currents analysis about the operating speed of AC traction. To use probabilistic method for HSR system, probability density function(PDF) for collected operating speed based measure data is calculated. Mean and variance of harmonic currents of single traction are obtained based on the operating speed PDF and electrical traction model. The results of Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS) are in well accordance with the experimental and analytic methods. The harmonics of different number of trainloads are systematically investigated. It is assessed by the total demand distortion(TDD) for the HSR system.

  • In general, the braking system of high speed train has an important role for the safety of the train. To stop the train safely at its pre-decided position, it is necessary to combine the various brakes properly. The Korean high speed train (HSR-350x) has adopted a combined electrical and mechanical (friction) braking system. In this study, the measuring method that can obtain the disc braking forces and friction coefficient between disc and pad during on-line test of HSR-350x has been suggested and verified through the comparison of the results obtained from this method and those of the results of the dynamo-tests.

  • The ride comfort is more important in the train speedup. Generally, it is defined as the vehicle vibration. There are many studies on evaluation method of ride comfort for railway. But the ride comfort for Korean high speed train(HSR 350x) has been assessed by statistical method according to UIC 513R. It is impossible for HSR 350x to run at constant speeds above 310km/h during 5 minutes required in UIC 513R because of the same operational condition as KTX and the design limitation of infrastructures. The ride indices data had been acquired from 80 to 310km/h through the on-line test. The present study has suggested the methodology for the estimation of the ride indices at high speed above 310km/h by using those obtained below 310km/h and reviewed the ride comfort for HSR 350x in these speeds.

  • Due to the nature of weather radar, blank areas occur due to impediments to observation, such as the ground clutter. Radar beam blockages have resulted in the underestimation rainfall amounts. To overcome these limitations, this study developed the Hybrid Scan Reflectivity (HSR) technique and compared the HSR results with existing methods. As a result, the HSR technique was able to estimate rainfalls in areas from which no reflectivity information was observable using existing methods. In case of estimating rainfalls depending on reflectivity scan techniques and beam-blockage/non beam-blockage, the HSR accuracy is superior. Furthermore, rainfall amounts derived from each method was inputted to the HEC-HMS to examine the accuracy of the flood simulations. The accuracy of the results using the HSR technique in contrast to the RAR calculation system and M-P relation was improved by 7% and 10%(based on correlation coefficients), and 18% and 34%(based on Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency), on average, respectively. Therefore, it is advised that the HSR technique be utilized in the hydrology field to estimate flood discharge more accurately.

  • For the Korean high speed railway rolling stock, which is developed through the G7 research project, various tests such as components test, prototype train test, on-line test have been carried out for years. In order to obtain the system stability, mutual interface between each part (rolling stock, track, bridge, electricity and signal) should be verified. For this reason, track performance according to the speed increase of HSR has been monitored in field. Especially, through the analyses of accumulated data, structural and running stability of HSR has been evaluated. With this viewpoint, this paper presents the track performance test method and the test results corresponding to 350km/h speed increase of HSR.

  • In this paper, we introduce the variation of ride characteristics for HSR 350x(Korea High Speed Train project) through on-line test during about 3 years. The concept of term "ride comfort" is equivocal. Generally it is evaluated as the vehicle vibration. The ride comfort for HSR 350x has been assessed by statistical method according to UIC 513R. The testing results show that HSR 350x has no problems from the viewpoint of the comfort ride on the high speed line and conventional line and that 1st and 2nd suspensions play an important role in the ride characteristics for high speed train.

In the case of Korean high speed train(HSR 350x), the ride comfort has been assessed by statistical method according to UIC 513R. To verify the design requirements for the performance of HSR 350x, the qualification tests had been conducted from August 19, 2002 to December 2004 and the stabilization and reliability tests are carried out nowadays. Up to December 2006, total test runs and the accumulated milage of the train were 357 times and 164,000km, respectively. A total of 352 ride indices had been acquired through the on-line test from Aug. 2002 to Dec. 2006. In this paper, we have reviewed the characteristics of ride comfort for HSR 350x according to the operational conditions, such as load and track conditions, season and used time, by using the tests data.
