  • This paper proposes the method to detect contours of a face, eyes and a mouth in a color image for making an avatar automatically. First, we use the HSI color model to exclude the effect of various light condition, and we find skin regions in an input image by using the skin color is defined on HS-plane. And then, we use deformable templates and Genetic Algorithm(GA) to detect contours of a face, eyes and a mouth. Deformable templates consist of B-spline curves and control point vectors. Those can represent various shape of a face, eyes and a mouth. And GA is very useful search procedure based on the mechanics of natural selection and natural genetics. Second, an avatar is created automatically by using contours and Fuzzy C-means clustering(FCM). FCM is used to reduce the number of face color As a result, we could create avatars like handmade caricatures which can represent the user's identity, differing from ones generated by the existing methods.

  • Objectives: Hypertrophic scars (HSs) are caused by abnormal wound healing. To date, no standard treatment has been made available for HSs. Scrophularia striata has been reported to accelerate wound healing and has the potential to prevent HS formation. In this study, we investigated the anti-scarring effects of S. striata extract (SSE) in a rabbit ear model of scarring. Methods: In this study, New Zealand white rabbit (weight: 2.3-2.5 kg) were used. In the prevention phase of the study, three test groups received 5%, 10%, and 15% ointments of SSE in the Eucerin base, the fourth group received Eucerin, and the fifth group received no treatment. The samples were obtained on day 35 after wounding. In the treatment phase of the study, the test groups received an intralesional injection of SSE (5%, 10%, and 15%), the fourth group received an intralesional injection of triamcinolone, the fifth group received a solvent (injection vehicle), and the sixth group received no treatment. To evaluate the anti-scarring effects of SSE, the scar elevation index (SEI), epidermis thickness index (ETI), collagen deposition, and MMP2 and MMP9 gene expression were evaluated. Results: A significant reduction in SEI, ETI, and collagen deposition was noted in animals treated with SSE compared with the control groups. In addition, topical SSE stimulated MMP2 and MMP9 gene expression. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate the potential for SSE in the prevention and treatment of HS. SSE could be prepared as an appropriate formulation to treat wounds and prevent abnormal scarring.

  • Evaluation of the smear effect caused by mandrel penetration into soft ground for a vertical drain installation is very important to predict the consolidation time of soft ground improvement. 30 kinds of laboratory model tests considering in situ conditions were conducted to investigate the formation of a smear zone and the decrease of coefficient of permeability in the disturbed zone. Three types(C(clay):M(silt)=1:1, 0.5:0.5, and 0:1) of reconstituted samples were used for 3 dimensional smear zone test. An experimental study was performed focusing on length of mandrel penetration, mandrel shape and size, earth pressure, and ground condition(unit weight and grain size distributions). Laboratory test results show that the length of mandrel penetration is the most critical factor for the formation of smear zone. As a result, the ratio between diameter of the smear zone($d_s$) and that of mandrel($d_m$) at field using long mandrel becomes larger than conventional $d_s/d_m$. The ratio between $d_s$ and $d_m$ ranges from 1.89 and 2.48 with the sample at C:M=1:0. It was also found that the $d_s/d_m$ value with the round shape of the mandrel is smaller than that of diamond one. The value of $d_s/d_m$ decreased with larger mandrel size, lower unit weight, and higher earth pressure. However, higher silt content led to increase of $d_s/d_m$. The ratio between coefficient of horizontal permeability in the smear zone($k_{hs}$) and that of undisturbed zone($k_{ho}$) ranged from 0.70 to 0.85. The test results imply that factors and values affecting $k_{hs}/k_{ho}$ show similar tendency with $d_s/d_m$.

  • The impact behavior of a multigirder concrete bridge under single and multiple moving vehicles is studied based on correlated road surface characteristics. The bridge structure is modeled as grillage beam system. A 3D nonlinear vehicle model with eleven degrees of freedom is utilized according to the HS20-44 truck design loading in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications. A triangle correlation model is introduced to generate four classes of longitudinal road surface roughness as multi-correlated random processes along deck transverse direction. On the basis of a correlation length of approximately half the bridge width, the upper limits of impact factors obtained under confidence level of 95 percent and side-by-side three-truck loading provide probability-based evidence for the evaluation of AASHTO specifications. The analytical results indicate that a better transverse correlation among road surface roughness generally leads to slightly higher impact factors. Suggestions are made for the routine maintenance of this type of highway bridges.

  • The non-preiodic fluctuation of the engine torque appears to be the major source of the torsional vibration of the automotive driveline. The reduction of this torsional vibration hs become a significant problem along with the requirements of higher performance. The shuffle(tip-in, tip-out) is the transient vibration phenomenon of a vehicle which appears at the sudden change of an accelerator under traveling. By executing of an experiment and a simulation using a model, it has become possible to obtain the design parameter of a driveline for the torsional vibration. This paper presents an experimental and theoretical research on the transient vibration phenomenon of a vehicle which appears at the sudden change of an accelerator under traveling. A dynamic model for the automotive driveline was developed, and all parameters of the mmdel were evaluated with experimental data. The results are as follows: (1) The lower the gea ratio of the transmission is, the more the transient vibration phenomenon of a vehicle appears clearly. (2) The transient vibration phenomenon of a vehicle is affected by the design parmeter of the driveline.

  • Color segmentation takes great attentions since a color is an effective and robust visual cue for characterizing one object from other objects. Color segmentation is, however, suffered from color variation induced from irregular illumination changes. This paper proposes a reliable color modeling approach in HSI (Hue-Saturation-Intensity) rotor space considering intensity information by adopting B-spline curve fitting to make a mathematical model for statistical characteristics of a color with respect to brightness. It is based on the fact that color distribution of a single-colored object is not invariant with respect to brightness variations even in HS (Hue-Saturation) plane. The proposed approach is applied for the segmentation of human skin areas successfully under various illumination conditions.

  • Casein micelles are the basic building block of rennet-induced gels. The stiffness of these gels is increased with reaction time. This is probably due to the continuous participation of activated casein micelles into growing network. Dual binding model of casein micelles, which explains assembly of casein and colloidal calcium phosphate, can provides fairly reasonable explanation for the changes in mechanical properties of rennet-induced gels made from different milk pHs and varying colloidal calcium phosphates. The changes in stiffness of these gels would be used for controlling textural properties of cheeses.

  • This paper deals with the buckling and optimization of a nanocomposite beam. The agglomeration of nanoparticles was assumed by Mori-Tanaka model. The harmony search optimization algorithm is adaptively improved using two adjusted processes based on dynamic parameters. The governing equations were derived by Timoshenko beam model by energy method. The optimum conditions of the nanocomposite beam- based proposed AIHS are compared with several existing harmony search algorithms. Applying DQ and Hs methods, the optimum values of radius and FS were obtained. The effects of thickness, agglomeration, volume percent of CNTs and boundary conditions were assumed. The results show that with increasing the volume percent of CNTs, the optimum radius of the beam decreases while the FS was improved.

  • The solubilities of $CO_2$ in 20wt% and 30wt% aqueous AMP solution were obtained from experiments at 40, 50, 60, 70, $80^{\circ}C$. Using the modified Kent-Eisenberg model, equilibrium constants and correlations were determined from the regression of experimental results of 30wt% aqueous AMP solution. There were good agreements between the predicted $CO_2$ solubilities in 20wt% aqueous AMP solution and experimented values. The prediction was conducted at the condition in the literature and the predicted values calculated from the model and correlations which were obtained from this work agree well with the prediction from Deshmukh-Mather model. Thus, the modified Kent-Eisenberg model and correlated equations suggested by this work, resonably well represent vapor-liquid equilibrium of $CO_2$ with aqueous AMP solution. The calculation of chemical species concentration in the liquid phase was performed uslng equilibrium model and from this calculation, we confirm that good absorption capacity is due to the formation of unstable carbamate. Heat of solution(${\Delta}Hs$) was calculated from the solubility data using the Gibbs-Helmholtz equation.
