  • The accidents caused by drivers while driving are considered as the major causes along with other causes such as conditions of roads, weather and cars. In this study, we investigated the driver's workloads under three different driving conditions (Weather, Driving time zone, and Traffic density) through analyzing biological signals obtained from a car driving simulator system. The proposed method is able to detect R waves and R-R interval calculation in the ECG. Heart rate variability (HRV) was investigated for the time domain to determine the changes in driver's conditions.

  • The QRS complex in ECG analysis is possible to obtain much information that is helpful for diagnosing different types of cardiovascular disease. This paper presents the preprocessor method to detect R-peak, RR interval, and HRV in wireless sensor node. The derivative of the electrocardiogram is efficiency of preprocessing method for resource hungry wireless sensor node with low computation. We have implemented R-peak and RR interval detection application based on dECG for wireless sensor node. The sensor node only transfers meaning parameter of ECG. Thus, implementation of sensor node can save power, reduce traffic, and eliminate congestion in a WSN.

  • Changes in building construction methods and repairing of older buildings have reduced infiltration rate. Synthetic materials, release airborne particles and uneven healthy odor are increased. For preventing pollutants introduce fresh outdoor air into the building, simply letting fresh outdoor air into building, however, Is not a cost-effective way to ventilation. When additional ventilation is added to an existing HVAC system, the heating and cooling equipment, often cannot handle the increased load. A HRV provides a way to minimize in energy costs while introducing fresh air to a building. In this study, the economical research of HRV, made of three types of materials, are conducted. Heat recovering characteristics are studied at seasonal outdoor air conditions based on the outdoor air property condition at, Seoul in 2002. As a results, the average sensible effectiveness is 0.75 in the sensible heat exchanger and average total effectiveness is 0.65 in the total heat exchanger. The pay back period of the sensible heat exchangers are $3.2{\sim}3.5$ year and it of total heat exchanger is 2.2 years.

  • The well-known Integral Pulse Frequency Modulation (IPFM) cardiac oscillator has been used to generate the heart beat fluctuations as a representation of the modulatory autonomic nervous activity in terms of sympathetic and parasympathetic state. The IPFM model produces heartbeats by integrating the modulated sinusoid signals and applying the threshold of unity or chaotic threshold levels. This study aims at evaluating the performance of IPFM model by analyzing the influence of the threshold level with comparatively applying preset threshold of unity and Logistic-map and Henon-map chaotic-threshold. Based on our simulated results with interpreting the spectral features of Heart Rate Variability (HRV), we can conclude that the IPFM model with preset threshold level of unity can generate the optimal heartbeat variations int the sense of clinically valid heartbeats.

  • This study aims at the new analysis of heart beat fluctuations by applying physiological Heart Rate Variability Model with representing the cardiac control system in sympathetic and parasympathetic-coupling oscillator constants, Cs and Cp. To find the effects of coupling constants on the beat-to-beat fluctuations, Integral Pulse Frequency Modulation (IPFM) model is adopted to generate the time series data of ECG R-peaks and represent them by poincaré scattergram plot in the time domain and HRV in the frequency domain, respectively. The actual poincaré plots and HRV spectrum are also analyzed by acquiring the experimental data from the subjects exposed to the emotional-stress invoking environment and the function of the coupling constants are verified in terms of antagonism in sympathetic and parasympathetic activity.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the alteration of upper cervical manipulation to autonomic nervous system (ANS) through the heart rate variability(HRV) analysis in young healthy individuals. Design: Two-group pretest-posttest design. Methods: Thirty four young healthy participants (17 males and 17 females) were randomized into the 2 groups, such as the upper cervical manipulation group (UCM group, n=17), neck stretching group (NS group, n=17). UCM group received a upper cervical manipulation, especially on the atlas, and NS group did stretch for both side of upper trapezius and levator scapular. For the UCM, Atlas mobility was checked by therapist and thrust was given once at the posterior arch of Atlas. HRV was measured before and after intervention to investigate ANS alteration. After the intervention, both groups were given 3 minutes break-time before measuring HRV. Results: The UCM group showed significant differences in ANS Activity, Stress Resistance, Stress index and Fatigue Index (p<0.05) while no differences in NS group with before and after intervention. There were significant differences in ANS Activity, Stress Resistance, and Fatigue Index between groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study suggected that upper cervical manipulationhas positive effects on the ANS activity, stress resistance, and fatigue index.

  • Physiological responses have been measured to recognize emotion. Although physiological responses have been interrelated between organs, their connectivities have been less considered for emotion recognizing. The connectivities have been assumed to enhance emotion recognition. Specially, autonomic nervous system is physiologically modulated by the interrelated functioning. Therefore, this study has been tried to analyze connectivities between heart and respiration and to find the significantly connected variables for emotion recognition. The eighteen subjects(10 male, age $24.72{\pm}2.47$) participated in the experiment. The participants were asked to listen to predetermined sound stimuli (arousal, relaxation, negative, positive) for evoking emotion. The bio-signals of heart and respiration were measured according to sound stimuli. HRV (heart rate variability) and BRV (breathing rate variability) spectrum were obtained from spectrum analysis of ECG (electrocardiogram) and RSP (respiration). The synchronization of HRV and BRV spectrum was analyzed according to each emotion. Statistical significance of relationship between them was tested by one-way ANOVA. There were significant relation of synchronization between HRV and BRV spectrum (synchronization of HF: F(3, 68) = 3.605, p = 0.018, ${\eta}^2_p=0.1372$, synchronization of LF: F(3, 68) = 5.075, p = 0.003, ${\eta}^2_p=0.1823$). HF difference of synchronization between ECG and RSP has been able to classify arousal from relaxation (p = 0.008, d = 1.4274) and LF's has negative from positive (p = 0.002, d = 1.7377). Therefore, it was confirmed that the heart and respiration to recognize the dimensional emotion by connectivity.

  • Background: Stellate ganglion block (SGB) might be associated with changes in the blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR). The heart rate variability (HRV) shows the balance state between sympathetic and parasympathetic activities of the heart. The changes in these parameters of the HRV were studied to evaluate the possible mechanism of SGB in changing the BP. Methods: SGB was performed on 26 patients, using a paratracheal technique at the C6 level, and 8 ml of 1% mepivacaine injected. The success was confirmed by check the Horner's syndrome. The BP, HR and HRV were measured before and 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes after the SGB. Results: The increases in the BP from the baseline throughout the study period were statistically, but not clinically significant. The HR and LF/HF (low frequency/high frequency) ratio were increased at 5 and 45 min, respectively, after the administration of the SGB. In a comparison of left and right SGB, no significant differences were found in the BP, HR and HRV. A correlation analysis showed that an increased BP was significantly related with the changes in the LF/HF ratio and LF at 15 and 30 minutes, respectively, after the SGB. Dividing the patients into two groups; an increased BP greater and less than 20% of that at the baseline INC and NOT groups, respectively, hoarseness occurred more often in the INC group (P = 0.02). Conclusions: It was concluded that SGB itself does not clinically increase the BP and HR in normal hemodynamic patients. However, the loss of balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve system, attenuation of the baroreceptor reflex and hoarseness are minor causes of the increase in the BP following SGB; therefore, further studies will be required.
