  • Compared with NR and HNBR compounds, the blend properties of NR/HNBR were studied. The heat, oil and ozone resistance of NR compounds were improved by blending HNBR, and these effects were more clearly revealed with elevating temperatures. For the overall stabilities of the compounds, it was resonable to use the carbon black under the 60phr. In the EV systems, high-saturated NR/HNBR and HNBR compounds showed similar total crosslink density in comparison with NR compounds. Interaction parameters calculated by stress-strain method showed widely varied value.

  • The characteristic of silicone rubber can be seen from its resistance to both low and high temperature, whereas HNBR is resistant only in high temperature moderatly although it can be compounded to give good tensile properties, good oil resistance while silicone rubber severely lacks in these qualities. This study was initiated a balance of properties by blending HNBR and silicone rubber which is not considered for commercial blending; blends of HNBR with silicone rubber tend to show immiscible due to dissimilar nature of silicone and HNBR, the possibility of phase separation cannot be ruled out, in unfilled system after vulcanisation leading to premature failure. Attempt has been made to improve compatibility and minimise the layer seperation by the use of compatibilizer. Both filled and unfilled systems, in presence and absence of compatibilizer have been studied. Improvement in tensile properties of the blends or are observed as compared to the non-blended rubber. Different ratios of HNBR and silicone rubber are represented in this study. Blends of HNBR with silicone rubber were immiscible system. The tensile strength increased with filler loading.

  • Intermittent CSR testing was used to investigate the degradation of a hydrogenated NBR(HNBR) O-rings, and also the prediction of its life-time. The cure system of HNBR O-ring was controlled as sulfur cure and peroxide cure system. An intermittent CSR jig was designed taking into consideration the O-ring's environment under use. The testing allowed observation of the effects of friction, heat loss, and stress relaxation by the Mullins effect. Degradation of O-rings by thermal aging was observed between 100 and $120^{\circ}C$. In the temperature range of $100-120^{\circ}C$, O-rings showed linear degradation behavior and satisfied the Arrhenius relationship. The activation energy of HNBR-S was about 70.6 kJ/mol. From Arrhenius plots, predicted life-times of HNBR-S O-ring were 31.1 years and 33.7 years for 50% and 40% failure conditions, respectively. In case of HNBR-P, the activation energy was about 72.1kJ/mol, and predicted life-times were 34.0 years and 36.5 years for 50% and 40% failure conditions, respectively. The peroxide cure system showed slower degradation rate and higher activation energy than the sulfur cure system.

  • Adhesive strength was evaluated for the polyester fabric treated with various concentration of polymeric isocyanate to introduce functional group on the surface. Also experiments were performed to find out the type of latex, F/R mole ratio, and FR resin/latex weight ratio for the RFL solution to optimize adhesion between HNBR compound and the treated polyester fabric. Optimum adhesion strength was obtained when 7 wt% of the concentration of polymeric isocyanate, NBR latex because of the compatibility of HNBR compound, 1/1 of F/R mole ratio, and 20 wt% of FR resin/latex were applied. Optimum cure temperature for the RFL solution was $200^{\circ}C$ according to the results of peel test and the reason was determined by analyzing the ATR FTIR spectra of the RF resin according to the curing temperature.

  • Although the interest in NBR has been increasing due to the recent developments of the aerospace sector, there are few reports on HNBR's aeronautical oil, particularly evaluations of the accelerated life of harsh factors. In this study, the tensile strength was adopted as a performance evaluation factor to evaluate the accelerated life of HNBR used in the aviation field. The accelerated stress factor affecting the performance-aging characteristics was defined as temperature. The acceleration stress factor was determined to be temperature, and the result of measuring the tensile strength change over time. The sample for the acceleration condition was taken out of the oven for a certain period and left at room temperature for 24 hours. The dumbbell type 3 specimens were manufactured according to the standard specified in KS M 6518 and were measured the tensile strength, a factor in accelerated life evaluations. The activation energy was 0.895, and the shape parameter was 1.152 using the Arrhenius model. The characteristic life obtained from the tensile strength of the HNBR specimen immersed in aviation oil at 20℃ was 272,256 hours; the average life was 258,965 hours, and the B10 life was 38,624 hours.

  • Currently, peroxide cure is a widely used cure system for rubber materials. To improve its effectivity, co-agents are used to enhance the peroxide efficiency and mechanical properties of rubber materials. Co-agents are multifunctional organic compounds that are highly reactive towards free radicals. These co-agents provide higher cross-link densities for a given peroxide concentration and improve the mechanical properties of peroxide-cured rubber composites. In this study, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) and high vinyl 1,2-polybutadiene (HVPBD) were used as co-agents. In order to obtain a concentration that achieves a favorable balance between mechanical properties and co-agent concentration, this research investigated the effects of co-agent content on the curing characteristics, chemical structures, and mechanical properties of HNBR composites. Additionally, the heat aging properties and compression sets of HNBR composites were investigated. Based on the results, we found that the HNBR composites with TMPTMA co-agents exhibited higher Shore A hardness and 10% modulus and better heat aging resistance and compression set than that of the HVPBD co-agent. The heat aging resistance and compression set deteriorated with increasing HVPBD content.

  • Generally, field performance of elastomeric track pad components has been poor, especially for the medium to heavy tonnage tracked vehicles, which are operated on the hilly cross-country course. The service life of these track pad, is affected not only by the terrain and environmental conditions but also by the speed, cornering, braking, weight of the vehicle, and the track tread design. In this research, modulus, tearing energy, and the rate of crack propagation of vulcanizates are evaluated by changing base materials to improve the service time of track pad. By increasing the contents of carbon black, modulus, tearing energy, and fatigue crack growth resistance of vulcanizates improved. Compared with the NR vulcanizate, the HNBR vulcanizate had a higher value of tearing energy. The rate of crack propagation of vulcanizates using smaller size carbon black was slower than that using larger size carbon black. When the HNBR was blended with the ZSC, the tearing energy of the vulcanizates was a little reduced because of the high modulus but the crack propagation rate was reduced significantly. In the relation between the crack propagation rate and the strain energy release rate, though up to 100% strain were applied to specimens, the slope on the log scale ($\beta$) varied between 1.72 and 2.3 with the kind of elastomer.

  • An acceleration life test for rubber gasket of pole transformer was performed. The Arrhenius method was applied as an accelerated degradation test. The failure mode was considered as an elongation, and the failure mechanism is counted as a heat. It is found that both the current material(NBR: Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) and recommended alternative material(HNBR: Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) have the same Weibull distribution as a life characteristic. For life expectation 95% reliability level of characteristic life is used at using temperature. The test results for NBR and HNBR are 7.7 years and 28.0 years on $50^{\circ}C$ of using temperature, respectively.

  • When a domestically manufactured floater is used in a general gasoline or LPG car, or a flowmeter is floated long time in the engine oil under above $150^{\circ}C$, the floater will be swelled or its organization will be slackened because weight and volume will be changed due to the osmosis of fuel. In this study, we conducted a research on a manufacturing technique of a foam-floater with the small changse in weight and volume, oil-resistance, and thermal resistance in the high temperature engine oil. When the prepared floater TROF II-3, where Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) as basic material of the floater was superseded by Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR), was floated for 100 h at the engine oil of high temperature ($150^{\circ}C$), the change rates of the weight and the volume were 2.90%, and 2.56%, respectively. These were less than the NBR (TROF I-3) case, where the change rates of the weight and the volume were 10.81% and 3.08%, respectively, Therefore, TROF II-3 was determined to be suitable as an engine-oil floater in high temperature because the change of weight and volume were small, the appearance, and the specific gravity of floater were maintained uniformly in the high temperature.

  • The piston reservoir is mainly used in hydraulic blow-down system for aerospace engineering. The reservoir is heavy due to both hydraulic cylinder and piston in pressurization. The positive expulsion tank with rubber diaphragm has been mostly applied propellant and fuel tank at low pressure to satellites. To reduce weight, the reservoir that can be used at high pressure with rubber diaphragm was developed. In this research, the prediction of life-time for the rubber diaphragm was implemented through an accelerated life test, as a part of development of new reservoir. Also, the diaphragm was stored in an temperature chamber at the same condition as and operation with hydraulic oil. As a result, the life-time for a rubber diaphragm was successfully evaluated via Arrhenius law and Time-Temperature Superposition based on failure times over temperatures in the accelerated test.
