  • The human leukocyte antigen (HLA), the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in humans has been known to reside on chromosome 6 and encodes cell-surface antigen-presenting proteins and many other proteins related to immune system function. The HLA is highly polymorphic and the most genetically variable coding loci in humans. In addition to a critical role in transplantation medicine, HLA and disease associations have been widely studied across the populations worldwide and are found to be important in prediction of disease susceptibility, resistance and of evolutionary maintenance of genetic diversity. Because recently developed molecular based HLA typing has several advantages like improved specimen stability and increased resolution of HLA types, the association between HLA alleles and a given disease could be more accurately quantified. Here, in this review, we have collected HLA association data on some autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, cancers, drug responsiveness and other diseases with unknown etiology in Koreans and attempt to summarize some remarkable HLA alleles related with specific diseases.

  • The HLA system architecture, prescribed in IEEE-1516, is a core fundamental technology to build a complex simulation network system which is composed of a number of individual simulation developed for different purposes. The model structure of flight simulation with expansibility and compatability was suggested in this thesis by showing how to implement HLA to a commercial flight simulation software and how the system implemented with HLA to work. In addition, it was judged whether real-time can be guaranteed implementing to a simulation system with integrity through analysis of flight information data collected by comparing real-time simulation based on HLA with commercial flight simulation.

  • HLA is the IEEE 1516 standard for the interoperation among heterogeneous simulations and RTI is a technology which provides a lower infrastructure service to interoperation. In this paper, we propose a Object-Oriented federate model architecture to enhance code reusability. It improves an efficiency of the system development process, and results in development time reduction and cost saving. It also is verified its practical effect through acting HLA certification on an software developed proposed architecture.

  • We describe a heterogeneous simulation framework, so called DEVS-HLA, in which conventional simulation models and the DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) models are interoperable. DEVS-HLA conceptually consists of three layers: model layer, DEVS BUS layer, and HLA (High Level Architecture) layer. The model layer has a collection of heterogeneous simulation models, such as DEVS, CSIM, SLAM, and so on, to represent various aspects of a complex system. The DEVS BUS layer provides a virtual software bus, DEVS BUS, so that such simulation models can communicate with each other. Finally, the HLA layer is employed as a communication infrastructure, which supports several good features for distributed simulation. The DEVS BUS has been implemented on the HLA/RTI (Run-Time Infrastructure) and a simple example of a flexible manufacturing system has been developed to validate the DEVS-HLA.

  • HLA(High Level Architecture)를 기반으로 한 시뮬레이션들은 분산 환경에서 수행되는 특징을 갖는다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 HLA MOM을 이용한 페더레이션을 관리 하는 FMS(federation Management System)을 개발하고자 한다.

  • In the biomedical domain, the longest matching method is frequently used for recognizing named entity written in the literature. This method uses a dictionary as a resource for named entity recognition. If there exist appropriated dictionary about target domain, the longest matching method has the advantage of being able to recognize the entities of target domain quickly and exactly. However, the longest matching method is difficult to recognize the enumerated named entities, because these entities are frequently expressed as being omitted some words. In order to resolve this problem, we propose the partial matching method using a dictionary. The proposed method makes several candidate entities on the assumption that the ellipses may be included. After that, the method selects the most valid one among candidate entities through the optimization algorithm. We tested the longest and partial matching method about HLA entities: HLA gene, antigen, and allele entities, which are frequently enumerated among biomedical entities. As preparing for named entity recognition, we built two new resource, extended dictionary and tag-based dictionary about HLA entities. And later, we performed the longest and partial matching method using each dictionary. According to our experiment result, the longest matching method was effective in recognizing HLA antigen entities, in which the ellipses are rare, and the partial matching method was effective in recognizing HLA gene and allele entities, in which the ellipses are frequent. Especially, the partial matching method had a high F-score 95.59% about HLA alleles.

  • Background: In the literature, data concerning the relationship between breast cancer and HLA class II gene polymorphisms are limited, so the aim of this study was to determine if HLA-DQB1 and HLA-DRB1 MHC class-II alleles may confer susceptibility or resistance to the disease among Jordanian females. Materials and Methods: This case control study enrolled 56 Royal Hospital breast cancer patients and 60 age matched healthy controls, all of whom provided blood samples (2011-2013). A questionnaire was filled after signing a consent form and DNA was extracted, nucleic acids being amplified for assessment of HLA-DQB1 and HLA-DRB1 alleles by muliplex INNO-LiPA and allele typing carried out by reverse hybridization. Comparison of HLA-DQB1 and HLA-DRB1 allele distributions was carried out with paired t-test and chi-square statistics. Risk factors were assessed by odd ratios with 95% confidence intervals. Results: A significant negative correlation was observed between $HLADQB1^*$ 02 alleles and breast cancers (p=0.013). No significant associations were observed among $HLADQB1^*$ 03, 04, 05 and 06 or among $HLA-DRB1^*$ 01, 03, 04, 07, 08, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15. Conclusions: $HLADQB1^*$ 02 alleles may provide positive protection against breast tumor risk among Jordanians, but not $HLADQB1^*$ 03, 04, 05 and 06 or $HLA-DRB1^*$ 01, 03, 04, 07, 08, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 alleles.

  • Membrane-bound HLA-G (mHLA-G) discovery on adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) as a tolerogenic and immunosuppressive molecule was very important. Many documents have shown that HLA-G expression can be controlled via some hormones such as progesterone (P4) and estradiol (E2). Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate progesterone and estradiol effects on mHLA-G in ADSCs at restricted and combination concentrations. Three independent cell lines were cultured in complete free phenol red DMEM and subcultured to achieve sufficient cells. These cells were treated with P4, E2 and P4 plus E2 at physiologic and pregnancy concentrations for 3 days in cell culture conditions. The HLA-G positive ADSCs was measured via monoclonal anti HLA-G-FITC/ MEMG-09 by means of flow cytometry in nine groups. Data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests. There were no significant values of the mean percentage of HLA-G positive cells in E2-treated and the combination of P4 plus $E_2-treated$ ADSCs compared to control cells (p value>0.05) but P4 had a significant increase on mHLA-G in ADSCs (p value<0.05). High P4 concentration increased mHLA-G but E2 and the combination of P4 plus E2 could not change mHLA-G on ADSCs.

  • Objective: The survival of a semi-allogeneic fetus depends on several immunological mechanisms, and it has been suggested that recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) could develop as a result of one or more immunological abnormalities. Methods: Compatibility between partners for human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotypes and the relationships between maternal killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) and paternal HLA-Bw4/Bw6 and HLA-C1/C2 supra-groups were investigated in 25 couples with RPL in comparison to healthy couples with children. HLA and KIR genotyping was performed using polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers and/or sequence-specific oligonucleotides. Results: HLA class I incompatibility between partners, especially in HLA-B alleles, was more common in the RPL group (p= 0.01). HLA-C2 homozygosity was more frequent in the male partners of RPL couples than in other groups (p= 0.03). The KIR2DL5 gene frequency was significantly higher in both the female and male partners of RPL couples, whereas the KIR2DS3 gene frequency in male partners of RPL couples was significantly reduced (p= 0.03). The presence of KIR2DL3 in women with RPL was correlated with the presence of HLA-C2 alleles in their spouses (p= 0.03). Conclusion: Our data from a Turkish population suggest that male HLA-C2 homozygosity may play an important role in RPL. Additionally, an incidental match between male HLA-C2 and female HLA-C1 ligand KIR receptors might perturb the balance between activatory and inhibitory KIR-ligand interactions during pregnancy in couples affected by RPL. The roles of orphan KIR2DL5 and orphan KIR2DS3 in RPL remain obscure.
