  • The recent developments and studies in the framework of output tracking control in the field of robotics that has been studied in the Control Laboratory, are presented. An output controller based on“Hardware-ln-the-Loop Simulation”(HILS) and“Rapid Control Prototyping”(RCP) concepts is developed using dSPACE. These new concepts are shown to be particularly beneficial for manipulator control tasks. In the Elbow manipulator design, there are two kinds of manipulators, namely the serial-drive type and the parallelogram-drive manipulator, The objective of this research is to model the two Elbow manipulators and to implement the proposed controller for manipulator applications. The control goal is to force the manipulator to follow a given trajectory in the given work space. Output controllers of the two elbow manipulators that are based on the model matching control approach have been implemented in two models that represent the robot equations of motion. To reduce the efforts in evaluating the proposed algorithm, a new system configuration method, based on HILS and RCP tools, was suggested to determine the parameters of the integrated dynamic system.

  • This study contains the process of developing a Mission Planning System (MPS) of an USV that can be applied in real situations and verifying them through HILS. In this study, we set the scenario of a single USV with limited operating time. Since the USV may not perform some missions due to the limited operating time, an objective function was defined to maximize the Mission Achievement Rate (MAR). We used a genetic algorithm to solve the problem model, and proposed a method using a 3-D population. The simulation showed that the probability of deriving the global optimal solution of the mission planning algorithm was 96.6% and the computation time was 1.6 s. Furthermore, USV showed it performs the mission according to the results of the MPS. We expect that the MPS developed in this study can be applied to the real environment where USV performs missions with limited time conditions.

  • A thermal management system of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell is taken charge of controlling the temperature of fuel cell stack by rejection of electrochemically reacted heat. Two major components of thermal management system are heat exchanger and pump which determines required amount of heat. Since the performance and durability of PEMFC system is sensitive to the operating temperature and temperature distribution inside the stack, it is necessary to control the thermal management system properly under guidance of operating strategy. The control study of the thermal management system is able to be boosted up with hardware in the loop simulation which directly connects the plant simulation with real hardware components. In this study, the plant simulation of fuel cell stack has been developed and the simulation model is connected with virtual data acquisition system. And HIL simulator has been developed to control the coolant supply system for the study of PEMFC thermal management system. The virtual data acquisition system and the HIL simulator are developed under LabVIEWTM Platform and the Simulation interface toolkit integrates the fuel cell plant simulator with the virtual DAQ display and HIL simulator.

  • In this paper, we implement an algorithm of transit signal priority control that not only maximizes service quality and efficiency of bus, but also minimizes the control delay of passenger cars using UTIS currently being deployed and operated in Seoul national capital area. For this purpose, we propose an algorithm that coordinates the strength of TSP by estimating bus demand. Typically, the higher the strength of TSP is on main street, the bigger the control delay is on the cross street. Motivated by this practical difficulty, we proposes an algorithm that coordinates TSP's strength by checking the degree of saturation of cross street. Also, we verify the possibility of field implementation via simulation analysis using CORSIM RTE based HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulation). The result shows that travel time of bus improves about 10 percent without increasing control delay of passenger cars by TSP. We expect the result of this research to contribute to increasing the overall transit ridership in this country.

  • This paper shows the design of operational flight program(OFP) using model-based design(MBD) method which is used in various engineering fields to reduce time and flight risks for development. The verification of OFP for DO-178C guidelines carry out by a model advisor function of simulink. The flight control logic on simulink is converted into C-language by auto code generation tool from, then it is implemented on 32bit digital signal processor(DSP). The verifications of flight control algorithm on various weather conditions are performed by the HILS system with Flight simulator program, X-plane.

  • This paper describes the design of navigation system for an unmanned target drone which is operated by Korean army as for anti-air gun shooting training. Current target drone is operated by pilot control of on-board servo motor via remote control system. Automatic flight control system for the target drone greatly reduces work load of ground pilot and can increase application area of the drone. Most UAVs being operated nowdays use high-priced sensors as AHRS and IMU to measure the attitude, but those are costly. This paper introduces the development of low-cost automatic flight control system with low-cost sensors. The integrated automatic flight control system has been developed by integrating combining power module, switching module, monitoring module and RC receiver as an one module. The performance of navigation for low cost unmanned aerial vehicle, unmanned target drone as our test bed in this paper is verified by both Hardware in the loop simulation(HILS) to test performance of GPS as GPS output frequency high and results of flight test.

  • There have been a lot of efforts on the improvement for the ride comfort and handling stability of the combat vehicles. Especially most of vehicles for military purpose have bad inertial condition and severe operating condition such as the rough road driving, and need a high mobility in the emergency status. It is necessary to apply the controlled suspension system in order to improve the vehicle mobile stability and ride comfort ability of crews. A feasibility study is performed on the application of the semi-active suspension system with a magneto-rheological controlled shock absorber for a $6{\times}6$ combat vehicle. First, the dynamic simulation model of the vehicle including the control model for the semi-active suspension system was executed. Based on this model, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation(HILS) system which has a semi-active suspension controller hardware was constructed. After full vehicle simulations were performed in virtual proving courses with this system, the semi-active suspension system was proven to give better ride comfort and handling stability in comparison with the conventional passive suspension system.

  • Overcurrent and abnormal voltages in the distribution system can cause not only burden of power plant but also damage to customers. As a result, researches related to the distribution automation have been widely conducted by utilizing a real time digital simulation to improve the reliability of power supply through rapid failure handing, reduction of power failure intervals and failure recovery. However, the distribution automation systems using the real time digital simulator are expensive and limited to verify actual hardwares. Therefore, in this paper, an external hardware devices was developed based on the distribution system analysis results of the digital simulator. And real-time simulation and functional verification are implemented by the real feeder remote terminal units used in distribution automation. The effectiveness of the proposed system is verified through several experiments.

  • Flight control computer of tiltrotor UAV was designed by redundancy system with primary and secondary channels to improve reliability. The redundancy functions consist of channel switching and data recovery. The channel switching function consists of software method by using cross channel data link and hardware method by using watchdog timer. The data recovery is the function to maintain flight condition when the flight control computer is restarted exceptionally in operation. The redundancy system was verified by flight control computer bench test, system integration test and HILS test. This paper describes the redundancy function of tiltrotor UAV flight control computer and test-verification method.

  • A simulation technique, which simulate dynamic motion and communication environments of ship in the lab, is needed in order to reduce the testing cost when we evaluate the transfer alignment performance of shipboard INS. Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation(HILS) can be used as an effective test method for those system because it can provide flexible and realistic simulation environments, various test scenario, and repeated test environment in the lab without additional cost and person. This paper presents the methods for implementing the real time HILS environment for testing transfer alignment performance of shipboard INS. It includes real time executive for controlling realtime simulation and calculating the ship motion, communication method for interfacing between the systems, and coordinate transformation method for converting real ship coordinate attitude data to lab coordinate attitude data.
