Various types of iron were determined in 5 meters interval from surface to bottom layers in Yeongil Bay water of Korea, late October 1973. The contents of every type of iron decreased outward from the inner part to the entrance of the bay. But there was not any difference in iron contents among the water masses. Particulate iron and ferric iron were lower in the entrance and central parts than in the inner parts of the bay. It seemed to be caused by turbidity. The concentration of soluble iron showed higher value at the area of entrance of harbour than those of any other stations. It suggests that there may be the origin of pollutants.
We have studied the effects of excitatory amino acids on the expression of the c-fos and c-jun mRNA in rat C6 glioma cells. The glutamate, $N-methyl-_D-aspartate$ (NMDA), and kainic acid (KA) increased c-fos mRNA level in a concentration-dependent manner. However, they did not affect c-jun mRNA level. In addition, forskolin and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) increased c-fos mRNA level. Furthermore, PMA increased c-jun mRNA level whereas forskolin downregulated c-jun mRNA level. The glutamate, NMDA and KA, at a concentration of 0.25 mM, did not affect the basal c-fos and c-jun mRNA levels, and also did not affect forskolin- and PMA-induced responses. Furthermore, both forskolin and PMA itself increased the phosphorylation of ERK (extracellular signal regulated kinase) and CREB (cyclicAMP responsible element binding protein) proteins. The KA, NMDA, and glutamate did not affect forskolin- induced increase of ERK and CREB phosphorylation. The KA decreased PMA-induced increase of phosphorylation of ERK and CREB proteins, whereas glutamate and NMDA did not affect the phosphorylation of ERK and CREB proteins induced by PMA. These findings suggest that, in C6 glioma cells, c-fos mRNA induction induced by EAAs is not mediated by phosphorylation of ERK and CREB proteins.
Recent studies demonstrated the ability of carbon nanotube (CNT) to promote electron transfer reactions of important compounds and to impart higher stability onto electrochemical sensors. CNT-based sensors measured by hydroxyl radical concentration or pH value suggest great promise for biosensors. This paper describes a new method for fabricating a very simple and inexpensive pH sensor compose of single walled-carbon nanotubes (SW-CNTs) using an ultra-precision spray. CNT-based sensor shows pH sensitivity in buffer solution at different pH range. Our experimental results show the sensor responses to pH buffer solution and the conductance of depends on the pH values. These results support application possibility of SW-CNTs based pH sensor for mass production.
Previous studies have shown that BMI-1026 is a potent inhibitor of the cyclin-dependent kinases (cdk). In cell culture, the compound also arrests G2/M strongly and G1/S and S weakly. Two key kinases, cdk1 (p34cdc2 kinase) and mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase (erk1 and 2), perform crucial roles during oocyte maturation and, later, metaphase II (MII) arrest. In mammalian oocytes, both kinases are activated gradually around the time of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) and maintain high activity in eggs arrested at metaphase II. In this study, we examined the effects of BMI-1026 on GVBD and MII arrest in mouse oocytes. BMI-1026 inhibited GVBD of immature oocytes and activated MII-arrested oocytes in a concentration-dependent manner, with more than 90% of oocytes exhibiting GVBD inhibition and MII activation at 100 nM This is approximately 500$\sim$1,000 times more potent than the activity reported for the cdk inhibitors roscovitine (${\sim}50{\mu}M$) and butyrolactone (${\sim}100{\mu}M$). Based on the results of previous in vitro kinase assays, we expected BMI-1026 to inhibit only cdk1 activation in oocytes and eggs, not MAP kinase. However, in our cell-based system, it inhibited the activity of both kinases. We also found that the effect of BMI-1026 is reversible. Our results suggest that BMI-1026 inhibits GVBD and activates MII-arrested oocytes efficiently and reversibly and that it also inhibits both cdk1/histone HI kinase and MAP kinase in mouse oocytes.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of partial osseointegration situation on bone loading patterns around two different free-standing screw shaped implants (Nobel Biocare, Gothenburg, Sweden and Degussa-Huls, Hanau, German). Two dimensional axisymmetric Finite element models of two implants(10mm length and 4mm diameter) were created according to different bone quantity, quality and osseointegration ratio in maxilla and mandible bone. At the same time uni-cortical and hi-cortical fixation were analyzed. Generally, full bond case showed less stress than partial bond case in overall area and mandibular model showed less amount of stress than that of maxilla model. Maximum stress of the Branemark implant is higher than that of ANKYLOS regardless of bonding ratio at crestal and apex region. However, more stress concentration was noted in ANKYLOS implant at screw body area especially in mandible. The effect of bicortical fixation on crestal bone stress reduction is dramatical in mandible however, there was no significant effect in maxillary case. The effect of partial bond on stress distribution was more significant at screw body and apex region than in crestal region. Partial bond cases demonstrated greater stress accumulation in trabecular bone than cortical bone. It is concluded that the more accurate model of implant and bone which affects stress and strain distribution is needed to mimic in vivo behavior of implants.

Fly ashes have been deposited around Youngwol power plant until electrostatic precipitator was installed in 1981. Fresh fly ash samples from electrostatic precipitator and weathered fly ash from ash disposal site were collected from Youngwol power plant, along with 65 soil samples of nearby area to look into the influence of PFA deposit on the soils in surrounding area. In chemistry, EPA does not contain high level of toxic elements and there is no notable concentration of toxic elements in soil near power plant. Total concentrations of Co, Cr, Cu, V, and Zn are 13 ppm, 89 ppm, 73 ppm, 157 ppm and 57 ppm in PFA. Concentrations of theses elements in ash-rich soils are 15 ppm, 78 ppm, 60 ppm, 133 ppm and 68 ppm, and those in ash-poor soils are 19 ppm, 70 ppm, 38 ppm, 91 ppm and 97 ppm. But these metal elements are highly concentrated in magnetic fractions of EPA (Co, 129 ppm; Cr, 217 ppm; Cu, 210 ppm; V, 197 ppm; Zn 90 ppm). Considering the process of long-term weathering of PFA, potentially toxic substances from the ash could be leached into soils and groundwater.
This research was carried out to find herbal preservatives for Makgeolli, as Makgeolli loses its commercial value due to overproduced acidic materials. When Makgeolli was kept at $25^{\circ}C$ to find the changes in acidity, total microbial cell number, yeast cell number, and bacterial species variety, a sudden increase of acidity as well as the disappearance of yeast cells occurred at day 6, and Makgeolli was changed to complete off-flavor. Acetobacter pasteurianus is the main acidifier in Makgeolli and shows a synergy effect in acid formation when cultured in combination with Lactobacillus casei. Among 12 herbs, the ethanol extract of Sutellaria baicalensis showed antimicrobial activity against A. pasteurianus, whereas the ethanol extract of Coptidis rhizoma showed antimicrobial activity against L. casei. Makgeolli added with Sutellaria baicalensis extracts demonstrated a lower acidity than that with Coptidis rhizoma extracts, which indicates that the inhibition of an acetic acid former is more important than that of a lactic acid former in Makgeolli preservation. Sutellaria baicalensis extracts prolonged the shelf life of Makgeolli by 1~2 weeks at a minimal inhibitory concentration ($0.63mg/m{\ell}$) during storage at $10^{\circ}C$.
The patterns of saponins of lateral gingengs cultivated different areas and various ginseng products were investigated by quantitative thin-layer chromatography. In the case of ginseng cultivated in the Kum San and Gang Hwa area, some parts of the panaxatriol series of the saponins (peak 6 and 7.8.9) were higher in concentration than in ginseng grown in other areas while the other ingredients were almost the same. In the process of heat treatment the quantity of peak 2 was generally decreased. However, in the case of red and white ginseng, one part of the panaxatriol saponins, peak 6 was increased. This tendency was also found in honeyed ginseng and ginseng tea which were not exposed to sunlight, but the increase was much less. The change in the red and white ginseng which were exposed to sunlight was very substantial. Therefore we can assume that the increase of peak 6 comes about due to the combination of heat treatment and exposure to sunlight, especially due to exposure to sunlight.
Design approach of upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket(UASB) process based on the biological kinetic parameters are known to be very difficult since the characteristics of the granular slut비e depends on the type of wastewater and size distribution of the granular sludge also depends on the upflow velocity in the UASB reactors. Furthermore, industrial wastewater containing toxic substances has been treated by UASB process without the clear knowledge of toxic effects on the granular slut형e. Hence, the present research was aimed on the intensive evaluation of biological kinetic parameters of the granular sludge in UASB reactor with and without toxic substance of 2, 4-dichlorophenol in order to present the basic design measures for UASB process design. The results could be summarized as follows. The biological kinetic parameters(k and Ks) considerably varied with the granular size of the sludge. Generally, 연e k and ks values of the granular sludge increased with the particle size of the granule. The biological kinetic parameters(k and Ks) of the granular sludge obtained from batch test were not applicable to design purpose of UASB process due to substrate diffusional limitation into the granular sludge in the completely mixed UASB reactors. The toxic effects on k and Ks greatly varied with the granular sixte. And as the toxicant concentration increased, the k value decreased while the Ks value increased. Inhibition constant(hi) for k with the toxicant of 2, 4-dichlorophenol varied from 0.5 to 2.3 depending on the granular sizes while the inhibition constant(Ki) for Ks varied from 20.7 to 80.1, showing the mixed inhibition.
Four organic polymers were mixed with mothmorillonite. Two cationic polymers a hi로 molecular weight polyacrylamide (494C) and a low molecular weight polymer (587C).Two anionic polymers include a high molecular weight polymer (aerotil). Each clay supension series were allowed to stand for 24 hours and were centrifuged, and the clay plugs were washed and dried. The dried samples investigated by XRD, IR and CEC measurement. The suspended clay containing anionic polymers was not flocculated at any concentratuons of polymer. But the suspendions containing two cationic polymers were rapidly flocculated at almost all concentrations. the d(001) spacings of Na-montmorillonite after being with cationic polymer 587C show about 15$\AA$ suggesting the polymers may have entered the interlayer spaces. The polymer 494C-treated sample produced double peaks of about 12 and 15$\AA$ in XRD. It indicates that the high molecular weight polymer. And cationic polymer 494C may be adsorbed mainy on the outside surface of clay, and some polymers may peretrate into olny interlayers in the margin of montmorillonite particles because of its high molecular weught. CEC of polumer 587-treated sample was reduecd mmarkedly suggesting polymer blocks CEC sites. The d(001) spacings of Ca-montmorillonite after being treated with cationic polymers show about 15$\AA$ suggesting that the interlayer spaces have not been expanded. In the experiment using a dilute Ca-bearing solution, the suspended caly containinf anionic polymers was flocculated. The results indicate that the flocculation behavior of montmorillonite-polymer supension depends on not only polymer properties such as concentration, electric charge and molecular weight but also compositions of solvent.
