Novel Heterogeneous Carbohydrase Reaction Systems for the Direct Conversion of Insoluble Carbohydrates: Reaction Characteristics and their Applications

  • Most carbohydrates exist in nature in an insoluble state, which reduces their susceptibility towards various carbohydrases. Accordingly, they require intensive pretreatment for structural modification to enhance an enzyme reaction. The direct conversion of insoluble carbohydrates has distinct advantages for special types of reaction, especially exo-type carbohydrase; however, its application is limited due to structural constraints. This paper introduces two novel heterogeneous enzyme reaction systems for direct conversion of insoluble carbohydrates; one is an attrition coupled enzyme reaction system containing attrition-milling media for enhancing the enzyme reaction, and the other is a heterogeneous enzyme reaction system using extruded starch as an insoluble substrate. The direct conversion of typically insoluble carbohydrates, including cellulose, starch, and chitin with their corresponding carbohydrases, including cellulase, amylase, chitinase, and cyclodextrin glucanotransferase, was carried out using two proposed enzyme reaction systems. The conceptual features of the systems, their reaction characteristics and mechanism, and the industrial applications of the various carbohydrates are analyzed in this review.

  • The new design methodology of a hybrid fuzzy controller by means of the genetic algorithms is presented. In fuzzy controller which has been widely applied and used. in order to construct the best fuzzy rules that include adjustment of fuzzy sets, a highly skilled techniques using trial and error are required. To deal with such a problem, first, a hybrid fuzzy controller(HFC) related to the optimal estimation of control parameters is proposed. The HFC combined a PID controller with a fuzzy controller concurrently produces the better output performance than any other controller from each control output in steady state and transient state. Second, a auto-tuning algorithms is presented to automatically improve the performance of hybrid fuzzy controller, utilizing the simplified reasoning method and genetic algorithms. In addition, to obtain scaling factors and PID Parameters of HFC using GA, three kinds of estimation modes such as basic, contraction, and expansion mode are effectively utilized. The HFCs are applied to the first-order second-order process with time-delay and DC motor Computer simulations are conducted at step input and the performances of systems are evaluated and also discussed from performance indices.

인삼의 섭취가 흡연성인의 인체임파구 SCE 빈도수에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Ginseng Intake on the Frequency of Sister Chromatid Exchanges of Human Lymphocyte of Adult Smokers)

  • This study was intended to investigate the anticarcinogenic effect of ginseng previously elucidated by other researches in animal studies. The sister chromatid exchange(SCE) method of human lymphocytes was used as a biomarker. Based on the literature search and the results of our laboratory, smoking was used as a parameter elevating the SCE frequency of general human population. To evaluate the smoking and ginseng effect on SCE frequency, 98 male healthy factory workers aged 23 to 58 years were divided into 4 groups : smoker with ginseng (SG), smoker control(SC), non-smoker with ginseng(NSG), and non-smoker control(NSC) groups, according to their smoking habits and ginseng intake. The mean sponteneous SCE per cell for the SG(10.8$\pm$0.3) and SC(10.4$\pm$0.3) groups were significantly higher than the NSG(9.1$\pm$0.2) and NSC(9.3$\pm$0.3) groups(p<0.05). High frequency cells (HFCs, cells with 15 SCEs) in SG and SC groups were also greater than those in NSG and NSC groups. However, the SCE levels of the SG and SC groups were not associated with the personal smoking history and the number of cigaretts smoked per day. Ginseng intake did not show any effect on the increased SCE caused by smoking. There were no correlations of the elevated SCE among smoking and ginseng types, history of ginseng intake, and consumption frequencies of ginseng intake. These results does not support the findings of other researchers that ginseng could be a protective agent to DNA damage.

열교환기 형태에 따른 이산화탄소용 가스쿨러와 증발기의 성능비교 (The Performance Comparison of $CO_2$ Gascooler and Evaporator with Heat Exchanger Type)

  • The natural refrigerants have used into HVAC equipments because the CFCs and HFCs have some environmental problems like high ODP and GWP. The carbon dioxide has small effect on the environmental problem but also good thermodynamics properties. In this study, the simulation study on the performance and characteristics of a $CO_2$ gascooler and evaporator using a fin-tube and microchannel heat exchanger has been conducted. Besides, the comparison of performance with operating condition was carried out in order to apply to the $CO_2$ heat pump system. As a result, the front sizes of a gascooler and evaporator using a microchannel were decreased by 63% and 58%, respectively, compared to those using a fin-tube. The performance of the fin-tube gascooler and evaporator were more responsive to the variation of operating conditions compared to that of microchannel. The pressure drop of a fin-tube heat exchanger was higher than that of a microchannel one.

가정용 흡수식 냉난방기 개발을 위한 재생기 성능실험 (Performance Experiment of Generator for Household Absorption Chiller and Heater)

  • Recently, the markets of the air conditioner are enlarging. The market size will reach 2.0 billion won in 2000. Electric heat pumps have been utilized as main residential air conditioners. especially in Korea. They cause a surge up electric power demand during summer. Moreover, the use of HCFCs and HFCs causes serious problem to the global environment such as global warming and ozone layer destruction. Absorption chiller and heater could solve such problems. It was built and tested for analyzing the performance of the generator for absorption chiller and heater. Experiment was done with a high temperature generator, a low temperature generator, heat exchangers, a condenser and a solution tank. It was tested that the double effect series flow cycle with two kinds of solution cycle. Solution cycle B showed better than solution cycle A. Two kinds of heat exchanger were used, where one's heat transfer area is bigger than the other. Bigger one increased a little performance of absorption chiller and heater. But it was not economical. From this study, we got that the coefficient of performance(COP) is 0.82 and the capacity is 7.24 kW for an absorption chiller and heater.

Evaporation Heat Transfer Characteristics of Hydrocarbon Refrigerants R-290 and R-600a in the Horizontal Tubes

  • This paper presents the experimental results of evaporation heat transfer coefficients of HC refrigerants (e.g. R290 and R600a). R-22 as a HCFCs refrigerant and R-l34a as a HFCs refrigerant in horizontal double pipe heat exchangers, having four different inner diameters of 10.07, 7.73, 6.54 and 5.80 mm respectively. The experiments of the evaporation process were conducted at mass flux of $35.5{\sim}210.4 kg/m^2s$ and cooling capacity of $0.95{\sim}10.1 kW$. The main results were summarized as follows : The average evaporation heat transfer coefficient of hydrocarbon refrigerants(R-290 and R-600a) was higher than the refrigerants, R-22 and R-l34a. In comparison with R-22 the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of R-l34a is approximately $-11{\sim}8.1 %$ higher. R-290 is $56.7{\sim}70.1 %$ higher and R-600a is $46.9{\sim}59.7 %$ higher. respectively. In comparison with experimental data and some correlations, the evaporation heat transfer coefficients are well predicted with the Kandlikar's correlation regardless of a type of refrigerants and tube diameters.

  • Due to environmental concerns $CO_2$ has been reintroduced as a potential candidate to replace HFCs in refrigeration systems. Oils are always required in a vapor-compression cycle, and thus actual working fluid in the system is $CO_2$-oil mixtures even though the oil concentrations are low at the heat exchangers and the expansion device. The cooling heat transfer coefficients for $CO_2$-oil mixtures under supercritical condition are required to designing of the gas cooler in the $CO_2$ refrigeration system properly. In the present study, the gas cooling heat transfer coefficients for $CO_2$-PEC9 was estimated by using the Gnileinski correlation, and the Kim and Ghajar model through the previous prediction models for the thermo-physical properties of $CO_2$-oil mixture. The Gnileinski correlation was used when the oil wt.% in the mixture is less than 1.0, and for the higher oil concentration the Kim and Ghajar model was applied. The estimated results agree with the experimental results conducted by the Dang et al.

  • Due to environmental concerns $CO_2$ has been reintroduced as a potential candidate to replace HFCs in refrigeration systems since 1990s. In a refrigeration cycle, oil is utilized in lubricating a compressor. However, although oil separators are installed after a compressor oil is prone to leak to the whole system. The mixing of $CO_2$ and oil, even a small amount of oil, the heat transfer performance in heat exchanger deteriorated and the pressure drop inside tube increases. Therefore, it is needed to precisely estimate the mixture thermodynamic properties of $CO_2$-lubricant oil to correctly design a $CO_2$ refrigeration system. The commonly used method in estimating the mixture properties is the mole based weighting model. However, the accuracy of the method can not be assured. In the present study, $CO_2$-lubricant oil mixture properties including viscosity and density were estimated by using the mixture models, based on the equation of state (EOS).

저온용 R502 대체 냉매의 이론 및 실험적 평가 (Theoretical and Experimental Evaluation of R502 Alternatives in Low Temperature Applications)

  • R502 has been extensively used as a working fluid in transport refrigerating vehicles and low temperature refrigerating machines but is to be phased out by the end of 1995 due to ozone layer depletion problem. In this study, both theoretical cycle analysis and experiments were carried out to examine the best substitutes for R502. Theoretical results indicate that the alternatives available in the market today may replace R502 without significant changes in the system without suction line heat exchanger(SLHX). When the system contains a SLHX, however, COPs of the alternatives increase up to approximately 15~20% than those without the SLHX. But simultaneously, the discharge temperatures of the compressor also increrease significantly with the SLHX. Actual test results obtained from the experiment with a transport vehicle's refrigerator indicate the similar trend as those of the theoretical results. Especially, HFCs and their mixtures show lower discharge temperature than those of R502, which is one of the desirable features. Further research is needed to study the effect of the SLHX on the performance of the real machine as well as on the oil return for reliability of the system.

탄화수소계 냉매의 풀비등 열전달 상관식 개발 (Development of Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Correlation for Hydrocarbon Refrigerants)

  • In this work, pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of hydrocarbon refrigerants are measured from a horizontal smooth tube of 19.0 mm outside diameter. Tested pure refrigerants are Propylene, Propane, Isobutane, Butane and Dimethylether (DME). The pool temperature was maintained at saturation temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ and heat flux was varied from $10kW/m^2$ to $80kW/m^2$ with an interval of $10kW/m^2$. Wall temperatures were measured directly by thermocouple hole of 0.5 mm out-diameter, 152 mm long and inserting ungrounded sheathed thermocouples from the side of the tube. Tested results show that HTCs of Propane, Propylene are 2.5%, 10.4% higher than those of R22 while those of Butane and Isobutane are 55.2%, 44.3% lower than those of R22 respectively. For pure refrigerants, new correlation can be applied to all of CFCs, HCFCS, HFCs, as well as hydrocarbons was developed. The mean deviation was 4.6%.
