  • FUors are believed in the outburst phase of the episodic accretion model with accretion mass rates enhanced by 2-3 orders of magnitude compared to the normal classical T-Tauri stars. We have been monitoring HBC 722, which was brightened by ~5 mag in the V band in 2010 and thus became a new FUor, with BOES. We also observed two other FUors, FU Ori and V1057 Cyg with BOES. V1057 Cyg has been monitored in the optical spectroscopy for decades since its outburst. We present the results of our 2-year monitoring observations of HBC 722 in comparison with FU Ori and V1057 Cyg.

  • Human body communication (HBC) is being recognized as a new communication technology for mobile and wearable devices in a body area network (BAN). This paper presents co-channel interference experienced by HBC supporting the physical layer in the IEEE 802.15.6 BAN standard. To analyze the co-channel interference, a co-channel interference model is introduced, and space-domain and time-domain parameters representing an interference environment are generated using the co-channel interference model. A new signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) parameter depending on the peak amplitudes of the data signals causing co-channel interference is defined; co-channel interference can be easily analyzed and modelled using the newly defined SIR. The BER degradation model derived using the co-channel interference model and SIR in this paper can be effectively used to estimate the performance.

  • We propose a new method for detecting voids behind tunnel concrete linings using the impact-echo method that is based on continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and a convolutional neural network (CNN). We first collect experimental data using the impact-echo method and then convert them into time-frequency images via CWT. We provide a CNN model trained using the converted images and experimentally confirm that our proposed model is robust. Moreover, it exhibits outstanding performance in detecting backfill voids and their status.

  • pH buffer capacities (pHBC, $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}\;pH^{-1}$) of 6 residual Entisols derived from granite, granite-gneiss, limestone, sandstone, shale, and basalt in Korea were studied. Soil acidity may become a problem if the soil pH is reduced to critical levels when nutrient cycles are unbalanced (especially N, C and S). The relation between the pHBC and the physico-chemical properties of the 6 soils was also studied. In the A horizons of all the soils except Euiseong series developed from sandstone, the contents of clay, organic matter and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were higher than those of C horizon, but bulk density and pH were lower than C horizon. Clay content of Euiseong series decreased with soil depth, which might be caused by the elluviation. The soils developed from granite, granite-gneiss and sandstone have a higher $SiO_2$ content than those developed from basalt and limestone. The contents of $Fe_2O_3$ and MgO were high in the soils from developed from basalt, limestone and shale comparing with the soils from granite, granite-gneiss and sandstone. The soils from basalt and limestone showed higher values of ignition loss than those from the other parent rocks. The pHBC of the soils was ranged from 1.8 to 3.2 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}\;pH^{-1}$ showing as follows : basalt, limestone > shale, granite-gneiss > granite sandstone.

  • The effects of various environmental factors such as pH (5, 6, 7, 8 and 9), temperature (30, 37 and $40^{\circ}C$) and rotational speed (150, 200 and 250 rpm) on the growth and the hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) production of Escherichia coli W3110IQ were examined in the present Study. The highest growth rate is achieved at pH 7, $37^{\circ}C$ and at a rotational Speed of 250 rpm which is 0.927 $h^{-1}$. The effect of pH on cell growth is more substantial compared to other parameters; it recorded a $123\%$ different between the highest growth rate (0.927 $h^{-1}$) at pH 7 and lowest growth at pH 5. The highest protein yield is achieved at pH 9, rotational speed of 250 rpm and $40^{\circ}C$. The yield of protein at pH 7 is $154\%$ higher compared to the lowest yield achieved at pH 5. There is about $28\%$ different of the protein yield for the E. coli cultivated at 250 rpm compared to that at 150 rpm which has the lowest HBcAg yield. The yield of protein at $40^{\circ}C$ is $38\%$ higher compared to the lowest yield achieved at $30^{\circ}C$.

  • We report the result of post-outburst observation of HBC722, the new FU Orionis-like young stellar object (also known as LkHa 188-G4 and PTF 10qpf; A. Miller et al., 2011). We have been monitoring this object since Nov. 2010 with KASINICS (Korean Astronomy and Space Institute Near Infrared Camera System) at Bohyun Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). The observations were performed two times; the first observation was conducted in Nov. 19, 24, and 25, 2010. And the second one was done in March 22 and 25, 2011. We used three filters: J, H, and Ks band. We did aperture photometry with IRAF packages and standardized the photometric result (instrumental magnitude) with 2MASS data that were used as standard stars. As a result, we have found that the brightness of the target decreased in all bands and its colors reddened: the magnitudes and colors of the target are J=10.37, H= 9.49, Ks=8.59, J-H=0.88, and J-Ks=1.36 on Nov. 19, 2010. And those are J=10.81, H=9.81, Ks=9.28, J-H=1.00, and J-Ks=1.53 on March 25, 2011. The previous study showed the similar decrease of brightness in J and H band except for Ks band., They were J= 10.03, H= 9.14, and Ks= 8.65 on Sept. 2010 and those were J= 10.02, H=9.24, and Ks= 8.59 on Nov. 2010. Consequently, we can conclude that HBC722 is fading out continuously from last November to this March.

  • This study examined the wastewater at a livestock farm, and found that the dairy wastewater from the milking parlor had a lower concentration than the piggery wastewater, and that it was produced at a rate under 1.3 ㎥/day in a single farmhouse. The amount of dairy wastewater was determined based on the performance of the milking machine, the maintenance method of the milking parlor, and the amount of milk production allocated for each farmhouse, not by the area. The results confirmed that both dairy wastewater treatment processes, specifically those using Hanged Bio-Compactor (HBC) and Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR), can fully satisfy the water quality standards of discharge. The dairy wastewater has a lower amount and concentration than piggery wastewater, meaning it is less valuable as liquid fertilizer, but it can be easily degraded using the conventional activated sludge process in a public sewage treatment plant. Therefore, discharging the dairy wastewater after individual treatment was expected to be a more reasonable method than consigning it to the centralized wastewater treatment plant. The effluent after the SBR process showed a lower degree of color than the HBC effluent, which was attributed to biological adsorption. In the case of the milking parlor in the livestock farm, the concentrations of the effluents obtained after HBC and SBR treatments both satisfied water quality standards for the discharge of public livestock wastewater treatment plants at 99% confidence intervals, and the concentrations of total nitrogen and phosphorous in untreated wastewater were even lower than the water quality standards of discharge. Therefore, we need to discuss strengthening the water quality standards to reduce environmental pollution.
