  • Covalently bonded halogen ligands possess unusual charge distributions, attracting both electrophilic and nucleophilic molecular ligands to form halogen bonds. In many biochemical systems, halogen bonds and hydrogen bonds coexist. The interplay between halogen and hydrogen bonds has been actively studied in various three-dimensional bulk molecular co-crystals. It was found that halogen bonds could be complementary to hydrogen bonds due to their similar bond strength and dissimilar directionality. In those ensemble-averaging approaches, however, it was not possible to extract local information such as individual bond configurations and nano-level domain structures, which is a crucial part of supramolecular studies. In this study, we directly visualize the individual molecular configuration of a brominated molecule and the role of halogen bonds on Au(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy. The precise arrangement of observed molecular structures was reproduced by first-principle studies and explained in the context of halogen and hydrogen bonds. We discuss the distances and the strengths of the observed halogen bonds and hydrogen bonds, which are consistent with previous bulk data.

  • Flammability, and released toxic halogen gases during combustion about two kinds of flame-retardant flexible foam(F.R. flexible PV foam) were investigated. One of the above was F.R. flexible PU foam with the containment of halogen and the other was manufactured with pure flexible PU foam in aqueous solution of alumina trihydrate(ATH) and dried 4 hours at 10$0^{\circ}C$. Flammability by L.O.I and UL94 HF-1 of the two materials were similarly shown. And combustion gases were analyzed with GC-Mass. HCI, CI$_2$ and HF were detected at both halogen being contained F.R. flexible PU foam and ATH dolng one The reason, to find halogen gases from burning ATH-containing F, R. flexible PU foam which wasn't used for any halogenated F.R., could be considered as by using trichlorofluoromethane with blowing agent to make PU foam. The relative quanity of relesed halogen gases of F.R. flexible PU foam with the containment of halogen had been indicated tree times HCI and CI$_2$, two times HF than ATH containing, respectively.

  • Halogen atoms in a molecule are traditionally considered as electron donors, since they have unshared electrons. Normally when they are bonded, there are three lone pair electrons. These lone pairs can function as Lewis bases. However, when they are bound to electron withdrawing groups, they can act as Lewis acids. Since the situation is similar hydrogen bonding (HB), this type of interaction is named as halogen bonding (XB). This mainly comes from the uneven distribution of electron density around the halogen atoms. Since the electron density around halogen atom opposite to ${\sigma}$-bond is depleted, its electropositive region is called ${\sigma}$-hole. This ${\sigma}$-hole can attract halogen bond acceptors, requiring more stringent directionality compared to HB. Since this interaction mainly comes from electrostatic origin, the geometry tends to be linear. Since the XB energy is comparable to corresponding HB. Still in its infancy, XB shows a broad range of applicability, with potentially more useful properties, compared to corresponding HB.

  • At the on-site of broadcasting production, the light source of tungsten halogen has been used as a primary light source for representing video images. Although tungsten halogen light has drawn attention in terms of the color reproducibility which is more similar to the sun light than that of other light sources, meanwhile it had problems in energy efficiency. Recently, the LED light source with high efficiency and long lifetime of the energy source has started getting attention as a substitute light source at the broadcast field. Because of the unique light emission principles, compared with tungsten halogen, LED light source has different characteristics in the quality of the light projected from the light source and color reproduction of the video image through a camera. These characteristics cause the delayed introduction of the LED as the broadcast light source. In this study we measured the quality characteristics of the flatness of the color reproduction and light of the LED light source and will present the experimental data whether it is suitable as the broadcasting light source compared to a reference light source of tungsten halogen. In addition, we suggested the future challenges and standards which are needed to expand usage of LED as a broadcast light source.

  • For low-smoke-type polyolefin compound, LDPE, EVA, and EEA as base resin, magnesium trihydrate, alumina trihydrate, and red phosphorous as flame retardant and MAH type compatibilizer were applied. The amount of each component was changed to find out optimum composition. Mechanical properties were obtained by tensile test and residual stress after aging and flame retardancy was evaluated by smoke density, LOI(Limit Oxygen Index), and UL-94 test. SEM was used for the investigation or morphology and halogen contents were obtained by measuring the amount of HCI. Two kinds of halogen free compositions for flame retardant and low smote resin were found and it is expected to be applied for various purposes.

  • Recently, new light curing unit utilizing the plasma xenon arc lamp is introduced. This curing unit is operated at relatively high intensity, so shortening the curing time significantly. The aim of this experiment was to estimate curing capability of plasma xenon arc lamp curing unit compared to traditional halogen lamp curing unit. Degree of conversion was evaluated by Raman spectroscopy after irradiation of specimens with halogen lamp curing unit(Optilux 150, Demetron, USA) for 20s, 40s, 60s and plasma xenon arc lamp curing unit(flipo, Lokki, France) for 2s, 3s, 6s. The results showed that strong light intensity of plasma xenon arc lamp curing unit did not compensate for short exposure time completely. So, Multi-layered curing within 2mm thickness and additional exposure time is recommanded when light-cured composite resin is polymerized with plasma xenon arc lamp curing unit.

  • This study is analyzed for electrical fire danger by electric equipments through surveys of stable owners and the field investigation at 64 stable. Also, an experiment is performed to analyze the thermal characteristics of 4 types electric wiring according to the number of operating halogen warm lamp group and automatic waterer group in Beon-young stable in the Cheongwon location. The survey is done to investigate the occurrence of electrical fire, electric equipment, causes and dangerous equipment. As a result, halogen warm lamp group and automatic waterer group are found to have dangerous loads. In the field investigation, the mode of load capacity of the halogen warm lamp group and automatic waterer group was investigated. The mode of load capacity of halogen warm lamp group (over 3 years) is found 17A and that of the auto waterer group (10 years) is 16A. In this experiment, the halogen warm lamp group aged at least 3 years showed $109^{\circ}C$ while that aged less than 1 year appeared $83^{\circ}C$, showing the max gap of $26^{\circ}C$. The automatic waterer group aged 10 years showed $90^{\circ}C$ while that aged less than 1 year appeared $68^{\circ}C$, showing the max gap of $22^{\circ}C$. These findings indicate that the mode of load capacity needs to be considered in selecting and installing wiring for the electric equipment construction of halogen warm lamp group and automatic waterer group in stable.

  • Conventional flame retardant cable using PVC or CR materials generate considerable amount of toxic and acidic gas (HCI etc.) together with excessive black smoke during a fire. The newly developed halogen free materials have dissolved the problem of halogen acid gases. This paer describes the development of this power cable insulation and sheath, using halogen free materals.
