  • Rate Constants of hydrolysis of N-(benzenesulfonyl)-C-(N-methylanilino)imidoyl chlorides were determined by UV spectrophotometry in 50% (v/v) aqueous methanol at 25$^{\circ}C.$ On the basis of rate equation, substituent effect, solvent effect, salt effect, thermodynamic parameters and hydrolysis product analysis, it may be concluded that the hydrolysis of N-(benzenesulfonyl)-C-(N-methylanilino)imidoyl chlorides proceed through $S_N1$ mechanism via azocarbonium ion intermediate below pH 9.0, while aebove pH 10.0 the hydrolysis proceeds through nucleophilic addition-elimination ($Ad_{N-E}$) mechanism.

  • Partail oxidation(POX) of n-butane was investigated in this research by employing ceria-promoted Ni/calcium hydroxyapatite catalysts ($Ce_xNi_{2.5}Ca_{10}(OH)_2(PO_4)_6$ ; x = $0.1{\sim}0.3$) which had recently been reported to exhibit good catalytic performance in POX of methane and propane. The experiments were carried out with changing ceria content, $O_2/n-C_4H_{10}$ ratio and temperature. As the $O_2/n-C_4H_{10}$ feed ratio increased up to 2.75, n-$C_4H_{10}$ conversion and $H_2$ yield increased and the selectivity of methane and other hydrocarbons decreased. But with $O_2/n-C_4H_{10}$ = 3.0, $n-C_4H_{10}$ conversion and $H_2$ yield decreased. This is considered due to that too much oxygen may inhibit the reduction of Ni or induce the oxidation of Ni, which results in poor catalytic activity. The optimum $O_2/n-C_4H_{10}$ ratio lay between 2.50 and 2.75. $Ce_{0.1}Ni_{2.5}Ca_{10}(OH)_2(PO_4)_6$ showed the highest $n-C_4H_{10}$ conversion and $H-2$ yield on the whole. In durability tests, higher hydrogen yield and better catalyst stability were obtained with the $O_2/n-C_4H_{10}$ ratio of 2.75 than with the ratio of 2.5.

Valproic Acid Induces Transcriptional Activation of Human GD3 Synthase (hST8Sia I) in SK-N-BE(2)-C Human Neuroblastoma Cells

  • In this study, we have shown the transcriptional regulation of the human GD3 synthase (hST8Sia I) induced by valproic acid (VPA) in human neuroblastoma SK-N-BE(2)-C cells. To elucidate the mechanism underlying the regulation of hST8Sia I gene expression in VPA-stimulated SK-N-BE(2)-C cells, we characterized the promoter region of the hST8Sia I gene. Functional analysis of the 5'-flanking region of the hST8Sia I gene by the transient expression method showed that the -1146 to -646 region, which contains putative binding sites for transcription factors c-Ets-1, CREB, AP-1 and NF-${\kappa}B$, functions as the VPA-inducible promoter of hST8Sia I in SK-N-BE(2)-C cells. Site-directed mutagenesis and electrophoretic mobility shift assay indicated that the NF-${\kappa}B$ binding site at -731 to -722 was crucial for the VPA-induced expression of hST8Sia I in SK-N-BE(2)-C cells. In addition, the transcriptional activity of hST8Sia I induced by VPA in SK-N-BE(2)-C cells was strongly inhibited by SP600125, which is a c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) inhibitor, and $G{\ddot{O}}6976$, which is a protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor, as determined by RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) and luciferase assays. These results suggest that VPA markedly modulated transcriptional regulation of hST8Sia I gene expression through PKC/JNK signal pathways in SK-N-BE(2)-C cells.

Adsorption Dynamics of Activated Carbon and Carbon Molecular Sieve Beds for Ethylene Recovery (배가스로부터에틸렌 회수를 위한 활성탄과 CMS 흡착탑의 흡착거동 특성)

  • The adsorption dynamics of activated carbon (AC) and carbon molecular sieve (CMS) beds were studied to recover ethylene from FCC fuel gas. In this study, the FCC fuel gas used consisted of six-component mixture ($CH_4/C_2H_4/C_2H_6/C_3H_6/N_2/H_2$,32:15:14:2:12:25 vol.%). And the breakthrough experiments of adsorption and desorption were carried out. The breakthrough sequence in the AC bed was $H_2$ < $N_2$ < $CH_4$ < $C_2H_4$ < $C_2H_6$ while the sequence in the CMS bed was $H_2$ < $CH_4$ < $N_2$ < $C_2H_6$ < $C_2H_4$. The separation performance of the CMS bed during the adsorption step was lower than that of the AC bed. However, due to the characteristics of kinetic separation, the CMS bed could remove $CH_4/N_2$ as well asthe molecules that are larger than $C_2H_6$, which was not easy to be done by the AC bed. Since it was hard to regenerate the adsorption bed by simple depressurization, vacuum regeneration should be adopted. As a result, the pressure vacuum swing adsorption (PVSA) process, consisting of CMS pretreatment process and AC main process, was suggested to recover ethylene efficiently.

The Thermodynamics of the Formation of Pyridine-Halogen and Interhalogens Charge Transfer Complexes (피리딘과 할로겐 또는 할로겐간 화합물 사이의 전하이동 착물생성에 관한 열역학적 연구)

  • Ultraviolet spectrophotometric investigations were carried out on the systems of pyridine with iodine, iodine monobromide and iodine monochloride in carbon tetrachloride. The results reveal the formation of the one to one molecular complexes of the type, $C_5H_5N{\cdot}I_2$, $ C_5H_5$N{\cdot}IBr and $ C_5H_5N{\cdot}ICl$. Considering ${\lambda}_max$ according to the formation of charge transfer complexes has the blue shift with the increasing temperatures$25, 40, 60^{\circ}C$ the equilibrium constants K and molar absorptivities $\varepsilon$ of complexes were obtained. From these values, the thermodynamic parameters ${\Delta}H$, ${\Delta}G$ and ${\Delta}S$ for the formation of the above charge transfer complexes were obtained. These results indicate that the relative stabilities of iodine, iodine monobromide and iodine monochloride complexes with pyridine increase in the order, $ C_5H_5N{\cdot}I_2$ < $ C_5H_5N{\cdot}IBr$ <$ C_5H_5N{\cdot}ICl$. This may be a measure of relative acidity of halogen and interhalogen toward pyridine and can be explained by the polarizabilities of electron acceptors and the difference of electronegativities of halogen atoms.

  • The crystal structure of sodium sulfisoxazole hexahydrate, $C_{11}H_{12}N_3O_3SNa{\cdot}6H_2O$,has been determined by X-ray diffraction method. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group $$P2_1}c$$ with a = 15.68(3), b = 7.70(2), c = 17.94(4)${\AA}$, ${\beta}$ = $118(2)^{\circ}$ and Z = 4. A total of 1717 observed reflections were collected by the Weissenberg method with $CuK{\alpha}$ radiation. Structure was solved by heavy atom method and refined by block-diagonal least-squares methods to the R value of 0.14. The conformational angle formed by the S-C(l) bond with that of N(2)-C(7), when the projection in taken along the S-N(2), is $73^{\circ}.$ The benzene ring is planar and makes an angle of $60^{\circ}$ with the plane of the isoxazole ring, which is also planar. The sodium atom has a distorted octahedral coordination of N(l) and five oxygen atoms from hydrate molecules. Sodium sulfisoxazole hexahydrate shows fourteen different hydrogen bondings in the crystal. These are six $O-H{\cdots}O-H bonds, three $O-H{\cdots}O$ bonds, two $O-N{\cdots}N,$ one $N-H{\cdots}O,O-H{\cdots}N,N-H{\cdots}O-H$ bond, with the distances in the range of 2.71 to $3.04{\AA}.$.

Effect on Heat Exchangers Efficiency on Performance of Cryogenic Refrigeration Cycles (열교환기 효율이 초저온 냉동사이클 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper presents the new cascade liquefaction cycles using $CO_2-C_2H_6-N_2$ and $CO_2-N_2O-N_2$. The performance of the cascade liquefaction cycles with respect to temperature differences in the LNG heat exchangers is analyzed using HYSYS software and then compared the performance of these cycles with phillips optimized cascade liquefaction cycle. The coefficient of performance of the new liquefaction cycles considered in this study decreases with the temperature differences in the LNG heat exchangers, but the compressor work, expander work and heat capacity in the LNG heat exchanger increases, respectively. From the comparison of performance of three cycles, the cascade liquefaction cycles using $CO_2-C_2H_6-N_2$ showed the highest COP. And the cycles using $CO_2-C_2H_6-N_2$ and $CO_2-N_2O-N_2$ presented the second and third highest COP, respectively. In the view of performance, the optimized cascade liquefaction cycle using $C_3H_8-C_2H_4-C_1H_4$ yields much better COP. But, in the environment view, it is found that the cascade liquefaction cycle using $CO_2-C_2H_6-N_2$ shows favorable characteristics.

  • Titanium carbide(TiC), Titanium nitride(TiN), and Titanium carbonnitride(Ti(C,N)) films were deposited on $Si_3N_4$-TiC composite cutting tools by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) using $TiCl_4-CH_4-H_2$, $TiCl_4-N_2-H_2$, and $TiCl_4-CH_4-N_2-H_2$ gas mixtures, respectively. The experimental results indicate that TiC coatings compared with TiN coatings on $Si_3N_4$ -TiC ceramic have an improved microstructural property, good thermal shock resistance, and good interfacial bonding. However TiN coatings compared with TiC coatings have a low friction coefficient with steel and good chemical stability. It is found by cutting test that coated insert compared with $Si_3N_4$-TiC ceramic have a superior flank and crater wear resistance. And multilayer coating compared with monolayer coating shows a improved wear resistance.

  • The antitumor properities of metal are not limited to Pt(II) complexes. Recently, it was reported that some Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes with sulfur and nitrogen ligands had potential antitumor reactivity. Pt(II) complexes is toxic drug for anticancer. Therefore, the complexes of Pd(II) with adenine, uracil, cytosine and malonate ligands are interesting for anticancer drug. We synthesized new palladium complexes containing nucleosides. The reactions of Pd(II) with adenine, uracil, cytosine and malonate ligands have been studied in aqueous solutions. The complexes isolated from these reactions have the following formulas; $[Pd(en)(C_5H_5N_5)_2](NO_3)_2,\;[Pd(en)(C_4H_3N_2O_2)Cl],\;[Pd(en)(C_3H_2O_4)]\;and\;[Pd(en)(C_4H_5N_3O)_2](NO_3)_2{\cdot}(C_4H_5N_3O)$. The compounds have been identified by elemental analysis, mass spectra, infrared spectra and electronic spectra.
