  • In the H.264/ AVC video coding standard, the intra-prediction coding with various block sizes offers a considerably high improvement in coding efficiency compared to previous standards. In order to achieve this, H.264/AVC uses the Rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique to select the best intraprediction mode for a macroblock, and it brings about the drastic increase of the computation complexity of H.264 encoder. To reduce the computation complexity and stabilize the coding performance on visual quality, this paper proposed a fast intra-prediction mode decision algorithm using non-parametric thresholds and simplified directional masks. The use of nonparametric thresholds makes the intra-coding performance not be dependent on types of video sequences and simplified directional masks reduces the compuation loads needed by the calculation of local edge information. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm is able to reduce more than 55% of the whole encoding time with a negligible loss in PSNR and bitrates and provides the stable performance regardless types of video sequences.

  • This paper presents a novel scene change detection method using intra prediction mode and edge direction in H.264/AVC. When scene change occurs, there are less temporal correlation between frames, most of macro-blocks encoded in intra mode. Using this property, the method calculates the percentage of intra mode blocks in each predictive frame in order to get candidates of scene change frame. To further find scene change, we obtain edge histogram of each candidates by using eight prediction direction of intra prediction mode in H.264/AVC. We detect scene change frames with $\iota^1$-norm of edge histograms. The experimental results show that the method is efficient and robust.

  • In this letter, an adaptive scanning that improves intra coding efficiency in the H.264/AVC standard is proposed. The proposed adaptive scanning utilizes the prediction directions (modes) that include the horizontal and vertical edge information in a block. Depending on the prediction directions, the proposed method uses three scanning methods: zigzag scanning, horizontal scanning, and vertical scanning. In the proposed method, horizontal and vertical scanning are used in vertical and horizontal prediction modes, respectively, and the normal zigzag scanning in the H.264 standard is used in all other intra prediction modes. The proposed method reduces the bit rate by approximately 2.5% compared with H.264/AVC, without the degradation of video quality.

  • EThe digitalized image information has various resolution, and it has been developed for several technologies to resize image depending on user's requests and applications. Recently the algorithm using edge information for good image/video quality on up-sampling was introduced, and the pre-processing procedure is required for edge extraction. Than, the predicted direction in intra prediction used in H.264/AVC has the similarity up to 80% for the edge information, so I propose the image up-sampling method using edge information. In proposed method, the image quality is similar to result of adapting n'th kernel. and the method reduces the number of calculation by about 50%.

  • H.264/AVC offers a better encoding efficiency than conventional video standards by adopting many new encoding techniques. However, the advanced coding techniques also add to the overall complexity for H.264/AVC encoder. Accordingly, it is necessary to perform optimization to alleviate the level of complexity for the video encoder. The amount of computation for motion estimation is of particular importance. In this paper, we propose a diamond web-grid search algorithm combined with efficient stationary block skip method which employs full diamond and dodecagon search patterns, and the variable thresholds are used for performing an effective skip of stationary blocks. The experimental results indicate that the proposed technique reduces the computations of the unsymmetrical-cross multi-hexagon-grid search algorithm by up to 12% while maintaining a similar PSNR performance.

  • In order to enhance encoding speed in dynamic image encoding using H.264/AVC, reducing the time for motion estimation which takes a large portion of the processing time is very important. An approach using graphics processing unit(GPU) as a coprocessor to assist the central processing unit(CPU) in computing massive data, will be a way to reduce the processing time. In this paper, we present an efficient block-level parallel algorithm for the motion estimation(ME) on a computer unified device architecture(CUDA) platform developed in general-purpose computation on GPU. Experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient dynamic coding scheme by using multiple code words in H.264/A VC entropy coding. The exponential Golomb (Exp-Golomb) code words used in H 264/A VC do not reflect enough the symbol distributions of the combined syntax element in [7] due to their static probability distribution characteristics However, the multiple codewords in this paper have different statistical characteristics. we propose a dynamic coding scheme by using selectively among multiple codewords to encode the combined syntax clement according to given image sequences. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the existing [7] me in compression efficiency without loss of quality.

  • In recent years, rate control is an important technique in real time video communication applications using H.264/AVC. Many existing rate control algorithms employ the quadratic rate-distortion model, which is determine the target bits for each P frame. In this paper, a new rate control algorithm for transmission of H.264/AVC video bit stream through CBR(Constant Bit Rate) channel is proposed. The proposed algorithm predicts an adaptive QP(Quantization Parameter) for improving video distortion, due to high motion and abruptly scene change, which target bit rate and MAD(Mean of Absolute Difference) for current frame considering image complexity variance between previous and current frames. Additionally, it uses frame skip technique to maintain bit stream within a manageable range and protect buffer from overflow or underflow. Experimental results show that the proposed method gives a quality improvement of about 0.5dB when compared to previous rate control algorithm. Also our proposed algorithm encodes the video sequences with less frame skipping compared to the existing rate control for H.264/AVC.
