Mesocosm experiments conducted for ecological purposes have become increasingly popular because they can provide a holistic understanding of the biological complexities associated with natural systems. This paper describes a new outdoor mesocosm designed for $CO_2$ perturbation experiments of benthos. Manipulated the carbonate chemistry in a continuous flow-through system can be parallelized with diurnal changes, while irradiance, temperature, and nutrients can vary according to the local environment. A target hydrogen ion activity (pH) of seawater was sufficiently stabilized and maintained within 4 h after dilution, which was initiated by the ratio of $CO_2$-saturated seawater to ambient seawater. Specifically, pH and $CO_2$ partial pressure ($pCO_2$) levels gradually varied from 8.05-7.28 and $375-2,691{\mu}atm$, respectively, over a range of dilution ratios. This mesocosm can successfully manipulate the pH and $pCO_2$ of seawater, and it demonstrates suitability for ocean acidification experiments on benthic communities.
Zeaxanthin is an important pigment in the photo-protection mechanism of microalgae. However, zeaxanthin epoxidase, an enzyme involved in the accumulation and conversion of zeaxanthin, has not been extensively studied in microalgae. In this work, we report the expression pattern of zeaxanthin epoxidase in Dunaliella tertiolecta (DtZEP) at different light and diverse salinity conditions. To confirm the responsiveness to light conditions, the ZEP expression pattern was investigated in photoperiodic (16 h of light and 8 h of dark) and continuous (24 h of light and 0 h of dark) light conditions. mRNA expression levels in photoperiodic conditions fluctuated along with the light/dark cycle, whereas those in continuous light remained unchanged. In varying salinity conditions, the highest mRNA and protein levels were detected in cells cultured in 1.5 M NaCl, and ZEP expression levels in cells shifted from 0.6 M NaCl to 1.5 M NaCl increased gradually. These results show that mRNA expression of DtZEP responds rapidly to the light/dark cycle or increased salinity, whereas changes in protein synthesis do not occur within a short period. Taken together, we show that DtZEP gene expression responds rapidly to light irradiation and hyperosmotic stress. In addition, ZEP expression patterns in light or salinity conditions are similar to those of higher plants, even though the habitat of D. tertiolecta is different.
In this communication, we introduce an Ishikawa type iterative algorithm for finding the approximate solutions of a class of nonlinear set valued variational inclusion problems. We also establish a characterization of strong convergence of this iterative techniques.

This paper presents the results of the robust H(sub)$\infty$ FIR filtering for a class of nonlinear continuous time-varying systems subject to real norm-bounded parameter uncertainty and know Lipschitz nonlinearity under sampled measurements. We address the problem of designing filters, using sampled measurements, which guarantee a prescribed H(sub)$\infty$ performance in continuous time-varying context, irrespective of the parameter uncertainty and unknown initial states. The infinite horizon causal H(sub)$\infty$FIR filter are investigated using the finite moving horizon in terms of two Riccati equations with finite discrete jumps.
Let W(t) be a Wiener path, let $\xi\;:\;[0,\;{\infty})\;\to\;\mathbb{R}$ be a continuous and increasing function satisfying $\xi$(0) > 0, let $$T_{/xi}=inf\{t{\geq}0\;:\;W(t){\geq}\xi(t)\}$$ be the first-passage time of W over $\xi$, and let F denote the distribution function of $T_{\xi}$. Then the first passage problem has a unique continuous solution as following $$F(t)=u(t)+{\sum_{n=1}^\infty}\int_0^t\;H_n(t,s)u(s)ds$$, where $$u(t)=2\Psi(\xi(t)/\sqrt{t})\;and\;H_1(t,s)=d\Phi\;(\{\xi(t)-\xi(s)\}/\sqrt{t-s})/ds\;for\;0\;{\leq}\;s.
In order to develop the whey beverage, we examined the optimum conditions for alcohol fermentation by Kluyveromyces tragilis ATCC 46537. The optimum conditions for alcohol production by K. fragilis ATCC 46537 were as follows; pH 4.5, $30^{\cir}C$, with a supplement of 50 g/l of lactose. To develop a continuous production of alcohol from whey, we compared batch fermentation with continuous iermentation in conjunction with UF system. Batch fermentation produced 11.0 g/l of alcohol, whereas pseudocontinuous and continuous fermentation with UF system produced 8.5 g/l of alcohol. To increase the alcohol production, we added 50 g/l of lactose to both fermentations. Batch fermentation with lactose supplement produced 15.7 g/l of alcohol and continuous fermentation with lactose supplement in conjunction with UF system produced 15.0 g/l of alcohol. These results clearly demonstrate that the UF system can be used to increase the alcohol production from whey, supplemented with exogenous lactose.
Since 2005, food waste has been separately collected and recycled to animal feed or aerobic compost in South Korea. However, the conventional recycling methods discharge process wastewater, which contain pollutant equivalent to more than 50% of food waste. Therefore, anaerobic digestion is considered as an alternative recycling method of food waste to reduce pollutant and recover renewable energy. Recent studies showed that hydrogen can be produced at acidogenic stage in two-stage anaerobic digestion. In this study, the authors investigated the effects of pretreatment time and pH low set value on continuous mesophilic hydrogen fermentation of food waste. Food waste was successfully converted to $H_2$ when heat-treated at $70^{\circ}C$ for 60 min, which was milder than previous studies using pH 12 for 1 day or $90^{\circ}C$. Organic acid production dropped operational pH below 5.0 and caused a metabolic shift from $H_2/butyrate$ fermentation to lactate fermentation. Therefore, alkaline addition for operational pH at or over 5.0 was necessary. At pH 5.3, the result showed that the maximum hydrogen productivity and yield of 1.32 $m^3/m^3$.d and 0.71 mol/mol $carbohydrate_{added}$. Hydrogen production from food waste would be an effective technology for resource recovery as well as waste treatment.
In this study, yeast cell immobilization was carried out in a packed bed reactor (PBR) to investigate the effects of the volumetric capacity of carriers as well as the different fermentation modes on fuel ethanol production. An optimal volumetric capacity of 10 g/l was found to obtain a high cell concentration. The productivity of immobilized cell fermentation was 16% higher than that of suspended-cell fermentation in batch and it reached a higher value of 4.28 g/l/h in repeated batches. Additionally, using this method, the ethanol yield (95.88%) was found to be higher than that of other tested methods due to low concentrations of residual sugars and free cells. Continuous ethanol production using four bioreactors showed a higher productivity (9.57 g/l/h) and yield (96.96%) with an ethanol concentration of 104.65 g/l obtained from 219.42 g/l of initial total sugar at a dilution rate of 0.092 h-1. Furthermore, we reversed the substrate-feed flow directions in the in-series bioreactors to keep the cells at their highest activity and to extend the length of continuous fermentation. Our study demonstrates an effective method of ethanol production with a new immobilized approach, and that by switching the flow directions, traditional continuous fermentation can be greatly improved, which could have practical and broad implications in industrial applications.
