The powdery mildew of Phlox (Phlox paniculata) extensively occurred in the experimental farm of Cheongam-myon, Hadong-gun, Gyeongnam province in 2002. Both sides of the leaves and stems were covered with the white fungal spores and mycelia, and then the leaves became brown to dark brown in color, eventually died. The conidiophores on the lesion were observed. Conidia were cylindric in shape, colorless, $25.3{\sim}49.4{\times}12.3{\sim}17.2{\mu}m$ in size and borne singly on conidiophore. Fibrosin bodies were not observed. Conidiophores were straight with 2-4 cylindric cells, and $65.7{\sim}124.8{\mu}m$ in size. Appressoria were lobed. Cleistothecia were not formed. This is the first report on powdery mildew of Phlox caused by Oidium sp. in Korea.
The vascular plants recorded from the 11 sites of coastal sand dune in North Gyeongsang Province are as follows: 204 taxa, 2 hybrids, 1 form, 22 varieties, 1 subspecies, 178 species, 132 genera, 43 families. These areas also present rare plant (Glehnia littoralis); 20 taxa, 20 species, 20 genera, and 15 families of floristics special plants; 46 taxa, 2 variety, 44 species, 30 genera, and 12 families of naturalized plants. The ratio of urbanization and naturalized index is 16.14% and 22.55% respectively. Life form spectrum is Th-$R_5-D_4$-e type. The number of species recorded from the coastal sand dune in Hujeong area turned out to be the highest (44.6%), and the coastal sand dune in Heseo area showed the highest naturalized index (31.58%).
In the present study, we carried out a seropositive survey of Neospora (N) caninum and Toxoplasma (T) gondii in cattle at northern area of Gyeongnam province, Korea. Serum sample was obtained from Holstein cattle (n=248, 44 farms in 5 counties) and Korean indigenous cattle (n=120, 23 farms in 4 counties). All 368 sera were tested for antibodies to N. caninum and T. gondii by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Seropositive of N. caninum at farm and heads were 41.8% (28/67) and 12.8% (47/368), respectively. Twenty-five cattle (6.8%) were seropositive to T. gondii, and eighteen (26.9%) of 67 studied farms had cows seropositive to T. gondii. The seroprevalence of Holstein cattle was much higher than that of Korean indigenous cattle. There was no apparent association of T. gondii seropositivity with age, while the seropositivity for N. caninum was associated with cattle age. The farm of cattle above the age of 5 years (16.8%) was more infective than less than 4 years (9.3%). This is the first report on seroprevalence of N. canium and T. gondii in Holstein and Korean indigenous cattle in Gyeongnam, Korea.
The study compared eating and physical activity related behaviors and self-esteem between healthy weight and obese children by presenting 175 primary school students in Busan City and Gyeongsang province with a self-reported questionnaire and Coopersmith's self-esteem inventory. The questionnaire was composed of 25 items, weighted primarily by a Likert scale. The self-esteem inventory presented to the students comprised 25 'Yes' or 'No' response questions to different statements. The study found obese children were more likely to think they always had to control their weight (p=0.000), reportedly measuring their weights significantly more than the healthy weight children. Also the study found that obese children are significantly more likely than healthy weight children to go on a diet, however neither group were successful in losing weight as the duration of the diet in 79.5% of the total sample lasted no longer than one week. In comparison to healthy weight children, obese children reported that they consumed fewer snacks during the day, avoided snacking subsequent to an evening meal and exercised more frequently for as long as physically possible. Interestingly, we found no difference of reported self-esteem between groups, though the obese group were more likely to answer that their parents did not understand them (p=0.055) Based on these findings, we concluded that the obese children who participated in the study were more aware of their body weights than the healthy weights children. It may be necessary to investigate further the relationship between self-esteem and participants' weights while considering other variables such as personality and body image.
Thirteen isolates of Bacillus thunngiensls producing parasporal mclusions, obtained from 45 samples of dust and soil of sericultural tarms in Kyeong-ki province, were exammed for their toxicity against larvae of Lepidoptera, Dipwra and Coleoptera. Of these isolates, Bacillus f thuringiensis NT0423 was toxic to bath Lepidoptera, and Dipteran larvae. NT0423 showed that the $LC_{50}$ values against the Lepldaptora, Plutella macuhpennis and the Diptera, Culex pipiens were $1.30\times10^6$ CFU/ml, $2.88\times10^5$ CFU/ml, respectively. The tYPlcal bipyramldal crystals produced by NT0423 composed of protoxms of 130-140kDa encoded by one or more plasm mid-horne genes. Also, plasmid DNA analysis indicated Lhat this isolate has 9 plasmids which d differ with reported several B. thuringiensis strains.
This study investigates the types and spread of framed structures of gable roofs meeting at right angle showed in old architecture and documentary paintings of houses, which were well liked in the early Joseon Dynasty. The conclusions of this study were as follows. First, the framed structure of gable roof meeting at right angle can be divided or recognized in 4 types according to their structure's size and purlin's position. Three of those types were noted to be in Seoul. Second, the framed structure of gable roofs meeting at right angle begun from the awareness of their independence from one another. Each space was divided based on their functions. Therefore, it could be extended in various forms, not only in the square plan physique but also in many different forms. And allowed free plan configuration regardless of column layouts or size of structure. Third, 5 purlins and 3 purlins crossing structure were preferred in Han-yang, the early Joseon Dynasty. It is related to the specific construction conditions of urban houses, such as the slope of land, limited land area, and economic power. Fourth, urban housing techniques were diffused throughout the country by officials who lived in Kae-gyeong and Han-yang at the end of Goryeo and early Joseon Dynasty. In other regions, framed structure of gable roof meeting at right angle households decreased, but in some regions of Gyeongsang-province, framed structure of gable roof meeting at right angle has maintained with Staggered purlin.
Anthracnose symptoms on Spiraea prunifolia were observed around the residential area of Dongbumyon, Geoje City, Gyeongnam Province, Korea in 2002 and 2003. Typical symptoms of the disease were dark red spot on the leaves and black spot on the stem. The pathogen formed gray to dark gray colony on potato dextrose agar. Conidia were single celled, color, ovoid or oblong in shape and $6{\sim}12\;{\times}\;3{\sim}5\;{\mu}m$ in size. Seta were dark brown in color, cone-shaped in shape and $23{\sim}42\;{\times}\;2{\sim}4\;{\mu}m$ in size. The optimum temperature for growth of the isolate was about $25{\sim}30^{\circ}C$. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. This is the first report on the anthracnose of S. prunifolia caused by C. gloeosporioides in Korea.
Purpose: In spite of many Healthy Cities projects in Korea, there are few research about healthy urban planning. So we tried to use available recent models to a Healthy Cities project in a medium sized city in Gyeongnam province. The studies on the rural housing have focused on folk housing, but this study focuses on the contemporary rural housing with special reference to the roof types/materials and the outer wall materials. The research area of this study is the fourteen rural settlements in Jeju Island. The hip roof type, the hip/flat roof type, the simple-flat roof type, the gable roof type, and the eyebrow-and-flat roof type are the most frequent roof types. Among the roof materials, the precoated steel plate, the artificial slate, the cement, the cement/roof tile, and the cement/artificial slate are the most frequent materials. The cement holds more than a half of the outer wall materials, and the cement/basalt rock, the tile/cement, the tile, and the diverse siding are the next frequent outer wall materials. The comparison of the rural housing reveals that there are some clear differences between Jeju Island and Gyeongnam Province in terms of the roof types and the outer wall materials.
