Objectives: We analyzed water in waterscape facilities to investigate contamination levels of water-borne pathogens and four test items (pH, turbidity, residual chlorine, and Escherichia coli) at facilities including play fountains, splash parks, and artificial streams from June to October in Suwon City and in the whole of Gyeonggi-do. Methods: A total of 62 waterscape facility samples were collected from 36 sites and tested for pathogenic Escherichia coli and water-borne viruses that cause hand-foot-and-mouth disease, eye disease, and acute enteritis. Results: None of the water-borne pathogens were detected in waterscape facility samples collected from across Gyeonggi-do that were for pre-inspection for facility management. However, the results of samples from Suwon collected in hot weather and during the school vacation period showed five total inconsistencies in turbidity (four cases) and Escherichia coli (one case). Three out of the four inconsistent samples in turbidity were from the same facility which operated a sand filtration system due to its locational factors close to mountains. Conclusion: We suggest that the waterscape facilities in Gyeonggi-do are managed properly in the respect of microbial contamination and water quality.
Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) causes pneumonia, airsacculitis, and pleuritis in chickens and other avian species. Little is known about the seroprevalence of ORT in layer chickens in Gyeonggi province, South Korea. The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of ORT in layer chickens in Gyeonggi province, South Korea from May to September 2019. A total of 460 chickens in 28 flocks were tested for antibodies to ORT by using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. The seroprevalence of ORT antibodies in the flocks was 100% (28/28) and the overall seroprevalence in individual chickens was 98.91% (455/460). This survey indicated the high seroprevalence of ORT in layer chickens in Gyeonggi province, South Korea. Therefore, measures should be executed to control ORT in layer chickens in this province.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the microbial contamination of red pepper powder distributed within Gyeonggi province in 2020 according to the place of purchase, the country of origin, and whether the HACCP certification and sterilization were conducted, and to evaluate the change of quality according to the storage method. Upon collecting and analyzing 100 samples, Bacillus cereus was detected in 3 cases (2 cases in large supermarkets and 1 case in traditional markets) and Clostridium perfringens in 27 cases (9 cases in large supermarkets and 18 cases in traditional markets). The levels of the total aerobic bacteria were not significantly different between the red pepper powder purchased from large supermarkets and traditional markets. However, the frequency of red pepper powder exceeding 7 log CFU/g of total aerobic bacteria was higher in traditional markets than in large supermarkets. Microbial quality was not significantly different regardless of the storage temperature (30℃, 4℃, -20℃) and the packaging method (zipper bag and clean bag) after 7 months of purchase. However, the moisture contents and ASTA color value of red pepper powder stored at 30℃ decreased remarkably after 3 months of storage. It is desirable to store red pepper powder in a refrigerator or freezer in order to maintain its quality during long-term storage.

This study was conducted to isolate the Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) and to find out the distribution of 15 serovars mainly in southern Gyeonggi province, Korea. From July 2011 to Nov. 2012, a total of 2,204 slaughter pigs (110 herds) were inspected for evaluation of APP like pneumonic lesions. 48 (33.8%) APP strains were isolated from the 142 lungs and identified using PCR assays (cps, apx/omlA, biovar). Consequently, the serotype ratio were as in the following; type2 41.7% (n=20), type5 33.3% (n=16), type12 10.4% (n=5), type1 6.2% (n=3), type4 and 7 2.1% (n=1) and unknown 4.2% (n=2). Also serological test was implemented for 452 (83 herds) serum samples randomly collected from above slaughter pigs using commercial ELISA kits. The positive ratio of each serotype for tested pigs were 19.1% (77/404) on [2], 7.1% (32/452) on [3, 6, 8], 6.9% (28/404) on [5a, 5b], 6.2% (28/452) on [4, 7], 2.8% (9/320) on [12], 2.0% (9/452) on [1, 9, 11] and 0.0% (0/452) on [10]. And 49.3% (223/452) of pigs were positive on apxIV antibody. On the basis of latter screening test, the infected farm ratio accounted for 71.1% (59/83) and that was much higher than previously reported data.
The hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) system was introduced to the Korean livestock slaughter and product processing business in 1997. Ice cream manufacturers focus on the sterilization process in order to reduce microorganism, so the HACCP-accredited ice cream manufacturers particularly set the sterilization process as critical control point (CCP). Therefore, the microbiological test results on the finished products can be considered as one of the indicators which show the level of microbiological control in the ice cream manufacturers. Accordingly, this study was carried out to examine if there is a meaningful difference in terms of the microbiological control level between the HACCP-accredited and non-accredited ice cream manufacturer groups by comparing aerobic plate count (APC) of ice creams. The mean of APC was 1.68 Log CFU/g in the HACCP-accredited ice cream manufacturer group and 2.59 Log CFU/g in the non-accredited ones respectively and there was a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). The test results suggest that the level of microbiological control in the HACCP-accredited ice cream manufactures is much higher than that of non-accredited ones.
In this study, we investigated pesticide residues in 207 agricultural products distributed by direct trade in the northern area of Gyeonggi Province. A total of 94 general agricultural products and 113 eco-friendly agricultural products collected from local grocers and cooperative stores were analyzed by multiresidue method for 263 pesticides using GC (gas chromatography)/ECD (electron capture detector), GC/NPD (nitrogen phosphorus detector), GC-MS/MS (tandem mass spectrometry), LC (liquid chromatography)/PDA (photodiode array detector), LC/FLD (fluorescence detector), LC-MS/MS. All samples showing pesticide residues were general agricultural products collected from local food stores. The pesticide residue levels of 14 samples (6.8%) were below the maximum residue limits (MRLs) and one of them (0.5%) exceeded the MRLs. Sixteen pesticides were detected from samples of the following produce items: spinach, young cabbage, perilla leaves, mallow, cucumber, chives and water dropwort. The safety of the detected pesticides was assessed by monitoring the daily intake estimate (EDI) and the daily intake allowance (ADI) based on the amount of pesticides detected. The ADI percentage range (the ratio of EDI to ADI) was 0.0134-61.6259% and there was no health risk connected with consuming agricultural products in which pesticide residues were detected.
Background: When basic local governments want to improve their air quality management policies, they need fundamental evidence, such as the effectiveness of current policies or scenario results. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to lay the groundwork for a process to calculate air pollutant reduction from basic local government air quality policies and provide numerical estimates of PM2.5 concentrations following improved policies. Methods: We calculated the amount of air pollutant reduction that can be expected in the research region based on the Gyeonggi-do Air Environment Management Implementation Plan issued in 2021 and guidelines from the Korean Ministry of Environment. The PM2.5 concentration variations were numerically simulated using the CMAQ (photochemical air quality model). Results: The research regions selected were Suwon, Ansan, Yongin, Pyeongtaek, and Hwaseong in consideration of population, air pollutant emissions, and geographical requirements. The expected reduction ratios in 2024 compared to 2018 are CO (3.0%), NOx (7.9%), VOCs (0.7%), SOx (0.1%), PM10 (2.4%), PM2.5 (6.1%), NH3 (0.05%). The reduced PM2.5 concentration ratio was highest in July and lowest in April. The expected concentration reduction of yearly mean PM2.5 in the research region is 0.12 ㎍/m3 (0.6%). Conclusions: Gyeonggi-do is now able to quickly provide air pollutant emission reduction calculations by respective policy scenario and PM2.5 simulation results, including for secondary aerosol particles. In order to provide more generalized results to basic local governments, it is necessary to conduct additional research by expanding the analysis tools and periods.
This study aimed to investigate microbial contamination of Dutch coffee in Gyeonggi province, South Korea. A total of 70 different Dutch coffee were purchased from an offline market (food service business operator). Two types of coffee were considered: "coffee made from food service business operator" and "coffee made from food manufacturer." The levels of total aerobic bacteria were 0.74-6.21 log CFU/mL in 15 samples and fungi were 0.70-4.00 log CFU/mL in 21 samples. Total aerobic bacteria was detected at higher levels in "coffee made from food service business operator" than in "coffee made from food manufacturer," and the difference was not significant. Three samples in "coffee made from food manufacturer" exceeded the standard for total aerobic bacteria. Escherichia coli, Coliform, and 12 types of foodborne bacteria were not detected in all samples. The extraction method detected no difference in cell counts of total aerobic bacteria and fungi. Therefore, to reduce microbial contamination of Dutch coffee, managing hygiene while maintaining the refrigeration temperature from the bean management stage to the sale process is crucial.
Using the freezing removal method, we investigated residual pesticides in 50 grape seed oils distributed in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The fat was mixed with acetonitrile and then frozen at ≤-20℃ for 24 h. Fats and oils were removed by separating those in solid state and the extract acetonitrile in liquid state. Ten residual pesticides were detected 161 times in 49 of 50 cases. The detected pesticides were boscalid, cyclufenamide, deltamethrin, difenoconazole, fluxapyroxad, fenpyrazamine, kresoxim-methyl, piperonyl butoxide, tebuconazole, and trifluoxysorbin. Boscalid, a fungicide, was most frequently detected (44 times), followed by fluxapiroxad (35 times). The detection range was 0.01-1.10 mg/kg, which was within the legal limit of residual pesticide for grapes. The recovery rate of the detected pesticides was 72.6-129.8% and the ratio of estimated daily intake/acceptable daily intake was calculated to determine the risk of the detected pesticides, which was <0.0028%. This indicated that the risk caused by pesticide residues in grape seed oil is at a safe level.
In order to confirm the impact of the Positive List System (PLS) being applied to all agricultural products from January 1, 2019, we analyzed 28,693 points of inspection-related data on agricultural products distributed in Gyeonggi-do from 2018 to 2020. The ratio of cases exceeding the standard for the total inspection performance was 1.0% in 2018, 1.2% in 2019, and 1.2% in 2020. Out of the 114 cases exceeding the standard in 2019, 55 were applied on a Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) of 0.01 mg/kg, and out of the 115 cases exceeding the standard in 2020, 66 were applied on a MRL of 0.01 mg/kg. To improve this, it seems necessary to manage unintentional pollution, conventional use for unregistered crops, and illegal pesticides. Fluquinconazole detection resulted from unintentional contamination, and diazinon, chlorothalonil, and methabenzthiazuron detection resulted from conventional use in unregistered crops. Chinomethionat is a pesticide component that was discarded in the past and its current use has been attributed to the smuggling of pesticides. This study and future monitoring data can be used as reference data for system supplementation and on-site management reinforcement.
