  • 1. Objectives Although the incidence of allergic rhinitis is increasing continually, Sasang Constitutional Medicine is showing favorable treatment outcomes. This study was aimed to test the antimicrobial effects of Bojungikgi-tang, Gwakhyangjeonggi-san, and Gunggwihyangso-san which are being applied to allergic rhinitis of Soeumin. 2. Methods Klebsiella pneumoniae 289 was extracted from allergic rhinitis patients. Bojungikgi-tang, Gwakhyangjeonggi-san, and Gunggwihyangso-san were boiled down and concentrated, and the substances obtained were tested for the effects on stability to temperature and pH and on antimicrobial activity 3. Results When measured the level of antimicrobial activity, the inhibition zones of Bojungikgi-tang, Gwakhyangjeonggi-san, and Gunggwihyangso-san were found 11.42, 11.07, and 10.63mm, respectively. The levels of MIC were $15{\mu}{\ell}$, $20{\mu}{\ell}$, and $10{\mu}{\ell}$ in that order. The antimicrobial activities were increased 13.88% in Bojungikgi-tang, 16.63% in Gwakhyangjeonggi-san, and 10.72% in Gunggwihyangso-san. There was no influence of pH to antimicrobial activity of all three substances. 4. Conclusions Bojungikgi-tang, Gwakhyangjeonggi-san, and Gunggwihyangso-san had a high level of antimicrobial activity to Klebsiella pneumoniae 289 even at a low concentration.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the anti-allergic activity of Gunggwihyangso-San(GHS). We investigated the anti-allergic effects of GHS in RBL-2H3 basophilic leukemia cells by compound 48/80, a mast cell degranulator and compound 48/80 induced anaphylactic shock in mice. Gunggwihyangso-San significantly inhibited ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase and histamine release from compound 48/80 stimulated RBL-2H3 cells. In addition, GHS effectively inhibited anaphylactic shock in mice by 50% at a dose 80 mg/mouse versus PBS treated control after the I.p injection(8 mg/kg) of compound 48/80. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activities of GHS in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells were investigated. GHS inhibited NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells and effectively dowregulated the expression of iNOS mRNA and iNOS protein expression in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. These result provide evidences that GHS may be beneficial in the treatment of allergic inflammtory disease.

  • Objective This study aimed to report an improvement of influenza virus infection managed with Sasang Constitutional Medicine in a Soeumin patient with thrombocytopenia and histories of acute myeloid leukemia and interstitial pulmonary disease. Methods The medical records of patient including vital signs, laboratory test, simple x-ray, and symptoms were reviewed retrospectively. Patient was treated with Gunggwihyangso-san gamibang without any antiviral agents under the diagnosis of Congestive Hyperpsychotic symptomatology of Kidney Heat-based Exterior Heat disease. Results At admission, symptoms of shivering, fever, cough and myalgia were presented and her skin temperature was over $39^{\circ}C$. Influenza A virus was detected and inflammation biomarkers were elevated. After administration of herb medication, her vital signs and symptoms were improved and elevated inflammation biomarkers were decreased. There was no secondary complication during the treatment period. Conclusions This case treated with Gunggwihyangso-san gamibang showed a significant improvement from viral infection without any complication.

  • Objectives This study is to suggest the herbal bathing and the manual therapy with herbs for obesity patients according to the Sasang constitutional medicine. Methods In this study, first, we found the books, web sites and papers about bathing. And also we classified the herbs those are used each therapy according to the Sasang constitutional medicine theory. Results and Conclusions: We make good used of salts, sulfur or herbal agents inserted into a bath, when we are bathing. And we knew that "The Pinda manual therapy" is a therapy with medical herbs in the West. The Pinda manual therapy is a fomentation therapy with wrapped in cloth and steamed medical herbs. According to Sasang constitutional right to bath in each prescription were as follows. Taeeumin: Taeeumin Galgeunhaegi-tang. / Soyangin: Soyangin Hyeongbangpaedok-san. / Soeumin: Gunggwihyangso-san, Soeumin Kwakhyangjeonggi-san. / Taeyangin: Ogapijangchuk-tang. And also, by Sasang constitution, applicable herbs to the Pinda therapy were as follows. Taeeumin: Seokchangpo, Wonji, Gobon, Gamguk, Sokdan, Wiryeongseon.. / Soyangin: Hyeonggae, Bangpung, Bakha, Ganghwal, Dokhwal. / Soeumin: Kwakhyang, Soyeop, Danggwi, Cheongung, Sesin, Jinpi. / Taeyangin: Ogapi, Mokgwa, Nogeun, Gyomaek. It will be need to more study for effective clinical applications.
