The specific rates of solvolysis of phenyl fluorothionoformate (PhOCSF, 1) have been determined in 22 pure and binary solvents at $10.0^{\circ}C$. The extended Grunwald-Winstein equation has been applied to the specific rates of solvolysis of 1 over the full range of solvents. The sensitivities (l = $1.32{\pm}0.13$ and m = $0.39{\pm}0.08$) toward the changes in solvent nucleophilicity and solvent ionizing power, and the $k_F/k_{Cl}$ values are similar to those previously observed for solvolyses of acyl haloformate esters, consistent with the addition step of an additionelimination pathway being rate-determining. The large negative values for the entropies of activation are consistent with the bimolecular nature of the proposed rate-determining step. The results are compared with those reported earlier for phenyl chloroformate and chlorothionoformate esters and mechanistic conclusions are drawn.
The solvolysis rate constants of 5-dimethylamino-naphthalene-1-sulfonyl chloride ($(CH_3)_2NC_{10}H_6SO_2Cl$, 1) in 31 different solvents are well correlated with the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, using the $N_T$ solvent nucleophilicity scale and $Y_{Cl}$ solvent ionizing scale with sensitivity values of $0.96{\pm}0.09$ and $0.53{\pm}0.03$ for l and m, respectively; the correlation coefficient value was 0.955. These l and m values can be considered to support an $S_N2$ reaction pathway having a transition state (TS) structure similar to that of the benzenesulfonyl chloride reaction. This interpretation is further supported by the activation parameters, i.e., relatively small positive ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ (12.0 to $15.9kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}$) and large negative ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ (-23.1 to $-36.3cal{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$) values, and the solvent kinetic isotope effects (SKIEs, 1.34 to 1.88). Also, the selectivity values (S = 1.2 to 2.9) obtained in binary solvents are consistent with the proposed mechanism.

The rate constants of solvolysis of phenyl N-phenyl phosphoramidochloridate (PhNHPO(Cl)OPh, Target Compound-TC1) have been determined by a conductivity method. The solvolysis rate constants of TC1 are well correlated with the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, using the $N_T$ solvent nucleophilicity scale and YCl solvent ionizing scale, and sensitivity values of $0.85{\pm}0.14$ and $0.53{\pm}0.04$ for l and m, respectively. These l and m values were similar to those obtained previously for the complex chemical substances dimethyl thiophosphorochloridate; N,N,N',N'-tetramethyldiamidophosphorochloridate; 2-phenyl-2-ketoethyl tosylate; diphenyl thiophosphinyl chloride; and 9-fluorenyl chloroformate. As with the five previously studied solvolyses, an $S_N2$ pathway is proposed for the solvolyses of TC1. For four representative solvents, the rate constants were measured at several temperatures, and activation parameters (${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$) were estimated. These activation parameters are also in line with the values expected for an $S_N2$ reaction.

Reactions of 1-adamantylmethyl chloroformate ($1-AdCH_2OCOCl$, 1) and 1-adamantylmethyl fluoroformate ($1-AdCH_2OCOF$, 2) in hydroxylic solvents have been studied. Application of the extended Grunwald-Winstein (G-W) equation to solvolyses of 1 in a variety of pure and binary solvents indicates an addition-elimination pathway in the majority of the solvents except an ionization pathway in the solvents of relatively low nucleophilcity and high ionizing power. The solvolyses of 2 show an addition-elimination pathway in all of the mixed solvents. The leaving group effects ($k_F/k_{Cl}$), the kinetic solvent isotope effects (KSIEs, $k_{MeOH}/k_{MeOD}$), and the enthalpy and entropy of activation for the solvolyses of 1 and 2 were also calculated. The selectivity values (S) for each solvent composition are reported and discussed. These observations are compared with those previously reported for other alkyl haloformate esters.
The rate constants of solvolyses of 2,2,2-trichloro-1,1-dimethylethyl chloroformate ($\underline{I}$) in 33 solvents can be well correlated using the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, with incorporation of the $N_T$ solvent nucleophilicity scale and the $Y_{Cl}$ solvent ionizing scale, with sensitivities towards changes in the scale having values of $1.42\;{\pm}\;0.09$ for l and $0.39\;{\pm}\;0.05$ for m, respectively. The activation enthalpies are ${\Delta}H^{\neq}\;=\;12.3$ to $14.5\;kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ and the activation entropies are -28.2 to $-35.5\;cal{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$, consistent with the proposed bimolecular reaction mechanism. The kinetic solvent isotope effect of 2.14 in MeOH/MeOD is in accord with a bimolecular mechanism, probably assisted by general-base catalysis.
The solvolysis rate constants of allyl chloroformate ($CH_2=CHCH_2OCOCl$, 3) in 30 different solvents are well correlated with the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, using the $N_T$ solvent nucleophilicity scale and $Y_{Cl}$ solvent ionizing scale, with the sensitivity values of $0.93{\pm}0.05$ and $0.41{\pm}0.02$ for l and m, respectively. These l and m values can be considered to support a $S_N2$ reaction pathway. The activation enthalpies (${\Delta}H^{\neq}$) were 12.5 to 13.4 $kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ and the activation entropies (${\Delta}S^{\neq}$) were -34.4 to -37.3 $cal{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$, which is also consistent with the proposed bimolecular reaction mechanism. The solvent kinetic isotope effect (SKIE, $k_{MeOH}/k_{MeOD}$) of 2.16 was also in accord with the $S_N2$ mechanism. The values of product selectivity (S) for the solvolyses of 3 in alcohol/water mixtures was 1.3 to 3.9, which is also consistent with the proposed bimolecular reaction mechanism.
Solvolysis rates of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-l-phenyl-2,2,2-trifiuoroethyl chloride (1) and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenylethyl chloride (2) were measured in a variety of aqueous binary solvents, and the solvent effect was treated with the Grunwald-Winstein equation. The solvent effect on the solvolysis of 1 failed to give a single linear correlations using the ordinary Y or YCl, but exhibited the wide split pattern which could not be related to the solvent nucleophilicity. The improved correlations with YBnCl and extended dual-parameter treatment, log (k/k0)=mYCl+hI (mΔYΔ), were observed for the solvolysis of 1. These results suggest that the incipient cationic charge in the solvolysis of 1 is delocalized strongly into the aryl-rings in the transition state. While the solvent effect on the solvolysis of 2 is better correlated with Y or YCl than YBnCl but the linearity is not satisfactory. The correlation is comparably improved by the use of the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, log (k/k0)=0.81YCl+0.26NOTs (R=0.994, SD=±0.12), indicating the cationic charge of reaction center of 2 was localized mostly in the transition state.

Solvolyses of 3,4-dimethoxybenzenesulfonyl chloride (DSC) in water, D2O, CH3OD, and in aqueous binary mixtures of acetone, acetonitrile, 1,4-dioxane, ethanol, methanol, and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) have been investigated at 25.0 oC. Kinetic solvent isotope effects (KSIE) in water and in methanol and product selectivities in alcohol-water mixtures are also reported. The Grunwald-Winstein plot of first-order rate constants for the solvolyic reaction of DSC with YCl shows marked dispersions into separated lines for various aqueous mixtures. With use of the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, the l and m values obtained are 1.12 and 0.58 respectively for the solvolyses of DSC. The relatively large magnitude of l is consistent with substantial nucleophilic solvent assistance. From Grunwald-Winstein plots the rate data are dissected approximately into contributions from two competing reaction channels. This interpretation is supported for alcohol-water mixtures by the trends of product selectivities, which show a maximum for ethanol-water mixtures. From the KSIE of 1.45 in methanol, it is proposed that the reaction channel favored in methanolwater mixtures and in all less polar media is general-base catalysed and/or is possibly (but less likely) an addition-elimination pathway. Also, the KISE value of 1.35 for DSC in water is expected for SN2-SN1 processes, with minimal general base catalysis, and this mechanism is proposed for solvolyses in the most polar media.
Rates of solvolyses of diphenyl thiophosphorochloridate ($(PhO)_2$PSCl, 1) in ethanol, methanol, and aqueous binary mixtures incorporating ethanol, methanol, acetone and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) are reported. For four representative solvents, studies were made at several temperatures and activation parameters were determined. The 30 solvents gave a reasonably precise extended Grunwald-Winstein plot, correlation coefficient (R) of 0.989. The sensitivity values (l = 1.29 and m = 0.64) of diphenyl thiophosphorochloridate ($(PhO)_2$PSCl, 1) were similar to those obtained for diphenyl phosphorochloridate ($(PhO)_2$POCl, 2), diphenylphosphinyl chloride ($Ph_2$POCl, 3) and diphenylthiophosphinyl chloride ($Ph_2$PSCl, 4). As with the previously studied of 3~4 solvolyses, an $S_N$ pathway is proposed for the solvolyses of diphenyl thiophosphorochloridate (1). The activation parameters, ${\Delta}H^{\neq}\;(=11.6{\sim}13.9\;kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1})\;and\;{\Delta}S^{\neq}\; (=\;-32.1\;{\sim}\;-42.7\;cal{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1})$, were determined, and they were in line with values expected for an $S_N$2 reaction. The large kinetic solvent isotope effects (KSIE, 2.44 in MeOH/MeOD and 3.46 in $H_2O/D_2$O) are also well explained by the proposed $S_N$2 mechanism.
Solvolyses of para-substituted phenyl chloroformates in water, $D_2O,\;CH_3OD$, 50% $D_2O-CH_3OD$, and in aqueous binary mixtures of acetone, ethanol, methanol are investigated at 25.0 ℃. Product selectivities are reported for a wide range of ethanol-water and methanol-water solvent compositions. These data are interpreted using the Grunwald-Winstein relationship, Hammett equation, and quantum mechanical model. Grunwald-Winstein plots of the first-order rate constants for phenyl chloroformates with $Y_{Cl}$ (based on 1-adamantyl chloride) show marked dispersions into three separate curves for the three aqueous mixtures with a small m value and a rate maximum for aqueous alcohol solvents. To account for these results, third-order rate constants, $k_{ww},\;k_{aw},\;k_{wa}$, and $k_{aa}$ were calculated from the observed $k_{ww}\;and\;k_{aa}$ values together with $k_{aw}\;and\;k_{wa}$ calculated from the computer fit. The kinetic solvent isotope effects determined in water and methanol are consistent with the proposed mechanism of the general base catalyzed carbonyl addition-elimination for para-substituted phenyl chloroformates solvolyses based on mass law and stoichiometric salvation effect studies. This study has shown that the quantum mechanical model predicts transition state variation correctly for $S_N2\;like\;S_AN$ reaction mechanism of para-substituted phenyl chloroformates.
