Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of body image, self-esteem, and behavior problems comparing children of short stature and children of normal height, and to enhance growth development through early detection of social or emotional problems in children of short stature. Methods: The data were collected from June 2 to September 25, 2008. The participants were 38 children who were diagnosed with short stature and their mothers and 38 children of age appropriate stature and their mothers selected from 311 elementary students in D city. The participants were matched by using propensity analysis for controlling confounding variables. Sapiro-Wilk test, t-test, Wilcoxon test, and Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS/WIN 14.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results: There were significant differences in body image and behavior problems between children of short stature and children of age appropriate stature. There was no significant difference in self-esteem between the two groups. Positive correlation was found between body image and self-esteem. In children of age appropriate stature, a negative correlation was found between body image and behavior problems. Conclusion: A specialized program which focuses on behavior problems, body image, and self-esteem should be developed to help children of short stature in school-based settings.

Purpose: Short stature affects approximately 2%-3% of children, representing one of the most frequent disorders for which clinical attention is sought during childhood. Despite assumed genetic heterogeneity, mutations or deletions in the short stature homeobox-containing gene (SHOX ) are frequently detected in subjects with short stature. Idiopathic short stature (ISS) refers to patients with short stature for various unknown reasons. The goal of this study was to screen all the exons of SHOX to identify related mutations. Methods: We screened all the exons of SHOX for mutations analysis in 105 ISS children patients (57 girls and 48 boys) living in Taif governorate, KSA using a direct DNA sequencing method. Height, arm span, and sitting height were recorded, and subischial leg length was calculated. Results: A total of 30 of 105 ISS patients (28%) contained six polymorphic variants in exons 1, 2, 4, and 6. One mutation was found in the DNA domain binding region of exon 4. Three of these polymorphic variants were novel, while the others were reported previously. There were no significant differences in anthropometric measures in ISS patients with and without identifiable polymorphic variants in SHOX. Conclusion: In Saudi Arabia ISS patients, rather than SHOX, it is possible that new genes are involved in longitudinal growth. Additional molecular analysis is required to diagnose and understand the etiology of this disease.

Purpose : Pharmacologic provocation test of growth hormone(GH) is a non-physiologic method and has several limitations for diagnosing growth hormone(GH) deficiency. Spontaneous GH release studies could be important in understanding the pathophysiology of children with poor growth but normal responses to GH provocation tests. Also, the relationship between nocturnal GH secretions and sleep patterns in short stature children is poorly understood. The aim of this study is to determine whether there are differences in sleep patterns and nocturnal GH secretory profiles between idiopathic short stature children and a normal stature group. Methods : Spontaneous nocturnal GH secretions and sleep patterns were evaluated in 12 prepubertal idiopathic short stature children with normal responses to provocation tests and 9 normal stature controls. Blood samples were taken every 30 minutes from 22:00-06:30 and sleep patterns were analyzed by polysomnography. Results : The mean GH level during sleep was significantly lower in short stature children than in controls. The peak GH level after sleep, coincident with the first slow wave sleep, was lower in the short stature group. The slow wave sleep times of short stature children were decreased compared with those of normal subjects. Conclusion : These results suggest that overnight serial GH sampling is helpful to identify short stature children with subnormal GH secretions, and sleep structure differences may be associated with decreased overnight GH secretions in short stature children.
This study is aimed to establish the direction of orthodontic treatment by analyzing the differences in the dental arch development due to the cause of short stature. Dental diagnostic tests were conducted on patients who were diagnosed with short stature. Idiopathic short statured children were classified through the paired sampling based on the age and gender of a short statured children with growth hormone shortage. Control groups were classified using same method as above, after selecting candidates with an arch length of less than 3mm and malocclusion. In conclusion, short statured children with growth hormone shortage or idiopathic had the higher rate of crowding and the small value of overbite compared to normal children. Therefore orthodontic treatment for short statured children needs treatment plan included evaluation for Arch length discrepancy to treat a crowding early. This study will provide important data for successful orthodontic treatment according to the characteristics of dental occlusion of short statured children.
Objective : Recently many studies of herbal medication to promote growth have been implemented. The purpose of this study was to identify the feasibility and safety of herbal medication on short stature. Methods : 143 patients(87 males, 56 Females)who visited with short stature at Kangnam CHA Oriental Hospital From February 1999 to January 2000 and were treated during 6 months, were available for this study. Recently, as interest in appearance has increased, various studies on treatment method for short stature are being conducted. In this study, the effect of growth plate stimulation on the height growth of children and adolescents was studied. As a result of pre- and post-analysis of the experimental group, it was confirmed that the difference in average height according to growth plate stimulation was relatively large. In addition, in the results of analyzing the effects of demographic factors on the height growth of the experimental group and the control group, weight showed the greatest influence on height growth among the demographic factors affecting the height growth of the experimental group. The effect on the height growth of the control group was found to have an effect in the order of age, weight, and father's height. The difference in height changed post-mortem between the experimental group and the control group was 1.10 cm for 3 months, and the difference was the result of growth plate stimulation. It was confirmed that growth plate stimulation had a significant effect on the height change of children and adolescents, except for weight, which is a common factor of height change in the experimental and control groups. Therefore, it is expected that it can be used as a treatment method for short stature.
The purpose of this study is to set the standard items of the garment size for infants. The studied subject consisted of 560 infants from at brith to 12 months of Pusan and Gyeongnam area. The Results from this analysis are as follows; 1. The most significant growths in body dimensions of infants as an month age advanced. Expecially, stature, weight and the items of height and length showed a quite rapid growth, but the items of girth, breadth and depth showed a slow growth. 2. The coefficient of correlation between stature and weight shows high value. The result of interpretation of the extracted components are as follows. It will be more appropriate to use the method of parallerizing with height and weight items rather than with month age in classficating and indicating of size for infant garment and in taking the head girth as basic item of infant for head-gears. Consequently, as the standard items for the classification of clothing constuction of infants, it is advisable to select weight alone or both stature and weight. 3. According to the method of classifying the somatotype by the index of body soundness, the Rohrer.Kaup index on the basis of standard items, weight and stature was divided into somatotype.

Among growth disorders, 'Short Stature' can be improved through rapid diagnosis and treatment, and for that, it is important to detect early'Short Stature'. It is recommended to measure the height steadily for early detection of 'Short Stature' and checking the kid's growth process, but existing height measurement methods have problems such as time and space limitations, cost occurrence, and difficulty in keeping records. So in this paper, we proposed an 'Development of Kid Height Measurement Application based on Image using computer vision' method using smart phones, a medium that is highly accessible to people. In images taken through a smartphone camera, the kid's height is measured using algorithms from OpenCV, a computer vision library, and the measured heights were printed on the screen through 'a comparison graph with the standard height by gender and age' and 'list by date', made possible to check the kid's growth process. It is expected to measure height anytime, anywhere without time and space limitations and costs through this proposed method, and it is expected to help early detection of 'Short Stature' and other disorder through steady height measurement and confirmation of growth process.

Objectives Previous animal studies have shown that mixtures of Cynanchum wilfordii and Phlomis umbrosa extract (IPLUS-CWPU) increases femur length and insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) secretion. IPLUS-CWPU may thus be a promising ingredient in functional foods aimed at growing child's height. The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of IPLUS-CWPU on height growth in children with short stature. Methods For this purpose, we recruited 90 children aged 4 to 12 years who had heights ranging from the 5th to 25th percentiles of Korean children's growth curve and randomized to either the IPLUS-CWPU or the placebo group. Results The IPLUS-CWPU group showed a significant increase in the change of the height growth compared to the placebo group after 20 weeks of administration (p=0.02). The height growth velosity also showed a statistically significant difference in the test group compared to the placebo group at 10 weeks (p=0.04). The IGF-1 levels showed a tendency to increase in the IPLUS-CWPU group (p=0.08). Moreover, the IPLUS-CWPU significantly increased IGF-1/IGFBP-3 ratio (p=0.02). However, there were no significant differences in blood biochemical parameters including growth hormone, bone age, thyroid stimulating hormone, and osteocalcin levels. Conclusions In conclusion, the data of this trial indicate that IPLUS-CWPU is effective and safe, generally well-tolerated without severe adverse events, in the treatment of children with short stature over a 20 weeks period.
