Solid phase crystallization (SPC) is a simple method in producing a polycrystalline phase by annealing amorphous silicon (a-Si) in a furnace environment. Main motivation of the crystallization technique is to fabricate low temperature polycrystalline silicon thin film transistors (LTPS-TFTs) on a thermally susceptible glass substrate. Studies on SPC have been naturally focused to the low temperature regime. Recently, fabrication of polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) TFT circuits from a high temperature polycrystalline silicon process on steel foil substrates was reported. Solid phase crystallization of a-Si films proceeds by nucleation and growth. After nucleation polycrystalline phase is propagated via twin mediated growth mechanism. Elliptically shaped grains, therefore, contain intra-granular defects such as micro-twins. Both the intra-granular and the inter-granular defects reflect the crystallinity of SPC poly-Si. Crystallinity and SPC kinetics of high temperatures were compared to those of low temperatures using Raman analysis newly proposed in this study.

Langasite ($La_{3}Ga_{5}SiO_{14}$) was found to have wide application as a promising piezoelectric material. It has high thermal stability of the frequency and large electromechanical coupling factor. For the further development of new compounds with langasite type structure, powders in the La-Al-Si-O system were synthesized by a modified Pechini process. The evolution of the crystalline phase during calcination was studied using TG-DTA, XRD and TEM for the precursor powders. Decomposition proceeded via dehydration and removal of excess solvents at low temperatures ($T<500^{\circ}C$), followed by the crystallization of lanthanum aluminum silicate ($T>800^{\circ}C$) and phase transformation to $LaAlO_{3}$ phase ($T>1200^{\circ}C$). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the calcined powders showed diffuse hollow rings corresponding to an amorphous phase at $800^{\circ}C$ and clear diffraction patterns corresponding to a crystalline phase from the P321 space group ($T<1200^{\circ}C$) and the R3m ($T<1200^{\circ}C$).
The present work was aimed to examine the changes of the shape and particle size distribution(PSD) of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ particles on ageing in Al-Li-(Cu, Zr) alloys which had low density, high specific strength and stiffness, Increasing ageing time and temperature resulted in particles whose aspect ratio tended toward 1. The aspect ratio of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ particles was not dependent upon the ageing temperature and time in Al-Li-Cu alloy but was dependent upon them in Al-Li-Zr alloy. The PSD of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ particles in Al-Li-Zr alloy skewed to the right hand compared with that in Al-Li-Cu alloy, because $Al_3Zr$ phase in Al-Li-Zr alloy formed before ageing promoted the precipitation and growth of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ phase. Therefore, the PSD of the ${\delta}^{\prime}$ particles was found to be affected by the presence of $Al_3Zr$ particles. The growth rate of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ phase was not affected by the existence of the third transition phase $T_1$ formed by the addition of Cu in Al-Li alloy but was affected by the existence of $Al_3Zr$ formed by the addition of Zr in Al-Li alloy.
A total of 96 weanling pigs with an initial body weight of 5.96 ± 0.08 kg were randomly allocated to two dietary treatments and fed experimental weaning diets for 36 days in three phases; phase 1: day 1 to 7; phase 2: day 8 to 21, and phase 3: day 22 to 36. Treatments consisted of a basal diet (CON) containing 334.0 g/kg dried whey versus a lactic acid (LA) supplemented diet containing 313.6 g/kg dried whey with 10 g/kg LA during phase 1; a CON diet containing 200.0 g/kg dried whey versus an LA diet containing 186.0 g/kg dried whey with 7 g/kg LA during phase 2. During phase 3, both CON and LA groups were fed a diet without dried whey and LA. Pigs fed the LA diet had a higher average daily feed intake ADFI (p = 0.014) and reduced (p = 0.035) gain-feed ratio compared to pigs fed CON diet in phase 2. In phase 3, the average daily gain and feed intake were both increased (p = 0.026 and; p = 0.010, respectively) in the pigs previously fed the LA diet than those fed the CON diet. The apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and, nitrogen, and the digestible energy were decreased (p < 0.05) in the LA diet group on day 7; however, increased (p < 0.05) digestibility of dry matter and nitrogen and digestible energy was observed at the end of phase 2 and 3. In conclusion, the inclusion of LA was inferred to have improved the average daily gain, feed intake, and nutrient digestibility during the late weanling period of pigs.
Microstructure and phase changes during the sintering of ZnO varistors were studied in ZnO-Bi2O3-CoO-Sb2O3 and ZnO-Bi2O3-CoO-Sb2O3-Cr2O3 systems using acanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The spinel phase and the Bi2O3 phase were formed by the decomposition of the pyrochlore phase during heating. The spinel particles (2-4$\mu\textrm{m}$), which were formed both along ther grain boundaries and within the ZnO grain, were always found near the pyrochlore phase. Intergranular phases (Bi2O3 and pyrochlore) were precipitated from the liquid phase during cooling. The Bi2O3 phases were located at the triple (or multiple) point of the ZnO grains. Cr2O3 played a role in decreasing the formation temperature of the spinel phase and Bi2O3 phase during sintering, and inhibited the grain growth.
Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of phytobiotics and organic acids on growth performance of nursery pigs as an alternative to antibiotics. Phytobiotics refer bioactive compounds from plant materials including essential oils and herbal extracts. In Exp. 1,144 pigs, weaned at 23.4${\pm}$0.3 d age, were allotted to three dietary treatments. Treatment diets were: 1) NC (no antibiotics and no phytobiotics); 2) PC (NC+carbadox, 50 mg/kg); and 3) PB (NC+phytobiotics; 0.1% PEP1000-$1^{(R)}$. Each treatment had six replicates with eight pigs per pen. Pigs were fed the experimental diets for 5 wks in 3 phases (phase 1 for 2 wk; phase 2 for 2 wk; phase 3 for 1 wk). In Exp. 2, 192 pigs, weaned at 19.2${\pm}$0.3 d age, were allotted to three dietary treatments: 1) NC; 2) PC; and 3) PBO (NC+phytobiotics; 0.2% or 0.1% PEP1000-$1^{(R)}$ and organic acids; 0.4% or 0.2% $Biotronic^{(R)}$for the phase 1 and 2, respectively) with eight replicates per treatment and eight pigs per pen. Pigs were fed the assigned diets for 5 wks in 2 phases (phase 1 for 2 wk; phase 2 for 3 wk). Body weights were measured at the beginning of the experiment and at the end of each week in both Exp. 1 and 2. Feed intake was measured at the end of each week in both Exp. 1 and 2. Diarrhea score was measured daily during the entire period for Exp. 1 and during the phase 1 for Exp. 2. In Exp. 1, the PC had a higher (p<0.05) overall ADG than the NC, but the overall ADG of the PB did not differ (p>0.05) from the NC or the PC. In Exp. 2, the overall ADG did not differ (p>0.05) among all the treatments during the entire experimental period. The overall ADFI and the overall gain:feed ratio did not differ (p>0.05) among all the treatments during the entire experimental period in both Exp. 1 and 2. The PC had a higher (p<0.05) overall diarrhea score (harder stools) than the NC and the PB in Exp. 1, and a higher (p<0.05) overall diarrhea score than the NC in Exp. 2. The overall diarrhea score of the PB and the PBO did not differ (p>0.05) from the NC or the PC in Exp. 1 and 2. Results from this study show that the growth of pigs fed the diets with phytobiotics or the combination of phytobiotics and organic acids did not differ from those both with antibiotics and without antibiotics when tested in an environmentally controlled research facility. Further experiments are required to study the growth performance in disease challenged conditions.
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of medium chain triglycerides (MCT) with organic acids (OA) on growth performance, fecal score, blood profiles, intestinal morphology, and nutrient digestibility in weaning pigs. Methods: A total of 120 weaning pigs ([Yorkshire×Landrace]×Duroc) with an average body weight (BW) of 8.00±0.87 kg were assigned in five treatments considering sex and initial BW in 3 replications with 8 pigs per pen in a randomized complete block design. The experimental diets included a corn-soybean meal based basal diet with or without 0.1% or 0.2% MCT and 0.1% OA. The pigs were fed the diets for 5 weeks (phase 1, 0 to 2 weeks; phase 2, 3 to 5 weeks). A total of 15 barrows with an average BW of 12.48±0.37 kg were used to evaluate the nutrient digestibility by total collection method. The BW and feed intake were measured at the end of each phase. Blood samples and small intestine samples were collected at the end of each phase, too. Results: Supplementing 0.1% MCT with 0.1% OA showed greater BW for week 5 and average daily gain (ADG) for overall period than control diet. Supplementing 0.1% MCT increased (p<0.05) ADG and improved (p<0.05) gain:feed ratio for phase 1. Dietary MCT and OA did not affect the fecal score and blood concentration of cortisol, immunoglobulin G, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and IL-10 in weaning pigs. Pigs fed the diets with 0.1% MCT had greater (p<0.05) villus height of duodenum and ileum for phase 1. Also, pigs fed the diet with 0.1% OA showed greater (p<0.05) villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratio of duodenum for phase 2. There was no significant difference in nutrient digestibility and nitrogen retention of pigs. Conclusion: Addition of 0.1% MCT with 0.1% OA in weaning pig's diet improved growth performance partly by enhancing intestinal morphology in weaning pigs.
The ${\gamma}/{\gamma}^{\prime}$ two-phases, commonly known as a eutectic structure, are observed in the ${\gamma}$ interdendritic region of a Ni-base superalloy. However, the growth behavior of the ${\gamma}/{\gamma}^{\prime}$ two-phases, whether it is of eutectic or peritectic nature, has not been decidedly established. Directional solidifications were, thus, performed with the planar interface at a low growth rate of $0.5{\mu}m/s$ in order to promote macro segregation. Directional solidification started with the ${\gamma}$ planar interface and the ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase nucleated on the ${\gamma}$ planar interface at the solidification fraction of 0.75. The ${\gamma}/{\gamma}^{\prime}$ two-phases showed the ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ rod structure as major phase and the ${\gamma}$ minor phase between ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ rods, and the volume fraction of the ${\gamma}$ phase changed continuously with an increasing solidification fraction. The two-phase ${\gamma}/{\gamma}^{\prime}$ is seen as the coupled peritectic.

The present study was performed to investigate the effects of two groups of sires with 'medium' and 'high' weight gain potentials (M-sires and H-sires, respectively) on growth of their progenies on varying planes of nutrition during the growing-finishing period. The ADG of the M-sires' progeny was greater (P < 0.05) than that of the H-sires' progeny (0.51 vs. 0.47 kg) during a 26- to 29-d early grower phase beginning from 55 d of age, but the opposite was true (0.66 vs. 0.72 kg) during the latter grower phase. Overall grower-phase ADG was greatest on the high plane of nutrition (H plane) followed by the medium (M) and low (L) planes (0.65, 0.61, and 0.51 kg, respectively; P < 0.05) in the M-sires' progeny, whereas in the H-sires' progeny, ADG was greater on the H and M planes vs. L plane (0.63, 0.62, and 0.54 kg, respectively). The ADG of pigs on the M or H plane during the grower phase and switched to the H plane thereafter (M-to-H or H-to-H planes) was greater than that of pigs on the L-to-L planes (0.99 vs. 0.78 kg) during the early finisher phase in the M-sires' progeny (P < 0.01). However, in the H-sires' progeny, ADG of pigs on the L-to-L planes did not differ from that of pigs on the M-to-M or H-to-M planes (0.94 vs. 0.96 kg). Results suggest that the H-to-H or H-to-M planes and M-to-M or M-to-L planes are optimal for maximal growth of the M- and H-sires' progenies, respectively.
