We report the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on Invar-42 plates using coal tar pitch (CTP) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The solid phase CTP is used as an inexpensive carbon source since it produces a bunch of hydrocarbon gases such as $CH_4$ and other $C_xH_v$ by thermal decomposition over $450^{\circ}C$. The Invar-42 is a representative Ni-based ferrous alloy and can be used repetitively as a substrate for CNT growth because Ni and Fe are used as very active catalytic elements. We changed mixing ratio of carrier gases, argon and hydrogen, and temperature of growth region. It was found that the optimum gas ratio and temperature for high quality CNT growth are $Ar:H_2=400:400$ sccm and $1000^{\circ}C$, respectively. In addition, the carbon nanoball (CNB) was also obtained by just changing the mixing ratio to $Ar:H_2=100:600$ sccm. Finally, CTP can be employed as a versatile carbon source to produce various carbon-based nanomaterials, such as CNT and CNB.
A correct understanding of vibration-based degradation is crucial from the standpoint of maintenance for Steam Generators (SG) as crucial mechanical equipment in nuclear power plants. This study has established a novel approach to developing a model for investigating tube bundle degradation according to crack growth caused by two-phase Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV). An important step in the approach is to calculate the two-phase flow field parameters between the SG tube bundles in various zones using the porous media model to determine the velocity and vapor volume fraction. Afterward, to determine the vibration properties of the tube bundles, the Fluid-Solid Interaction (FSI) analysis is performed in eighteen thermal-hydraulic zones. Tube bundle degradation based on crack growth using the sixteen most probable initial cracks and within each SG thermal-hydraulic zone is performed to calculate useful lifetime. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model, Paris law, and Wiener process model are considered to model the turbulent crossflow around the tube bundles, simulation of elliptical crack growth due to the vibration characteristics, and estimation of SG tube bundles degradation, respectively. The analysis shows that the tube deforms most noticeably in the zone with the highest velocity. As a result, cracks propagate more quickly in the tube with a higher height. In all simulations based on different initial crack sizes, it was observed that zone 16 experiences the greatest deformation and, subsequently, the fastest degradation, with a velocity and vapor volume fraction of 0.5 m/s and 0.4, respectively.
Transparent organic materials have been frequently used as an analog of the solidifying metallic materials, because their transparency permits an in-situ observation of the microstructural development during solidification through optical microscopy. Pivalic acid (PVA)-ethanol system showing an anisotropic property in solid-liquid interfacial energy and interface kinetics was adopted in the present experiment, and the detailed experiments performed are as follows: (1) variation of dendrite tip temperature with growth velocity, (2) correlation between primary dendrite arm spacing (${\lambda}_1$) and the growth orientation away from the heat flow direction (tilt angle: ${\theta}$), (3) variation of dendrite tip radius (R) with growth velocity (V), (4) dendrite tip stability parameter (${\sigma}^*$) and its dependence on the concentration. Concerning the correlation between the dendrite tip temperature and growth velocity the present result is well suited to Hunt-Lu equation. As the tilt angle increases, the average primary dendrite spacing tends to increase.

Grain boundary diffusion plays significant role in the fission gas release, which is one of the crucial processes dominating nuclear fuel performance. Gaseous fission products such as Xe and Kr generated inside fuel pellet have to diffuse in the lattice and in the grain boundary before they reach open space in the fuel rod. In the mean time, the grains in the fuel pellet grow and shrink according to grain growth kinetics, especially at elevated temperature at which nuclear reactors are operating. Thus the boundary movement ascribed to the grain growth greatly influences the fission gas release rate by lengthening or shortening the lattice diffusion distance, which is the rate limiting step. Sweeping fission gases by the moving boundary contributes to the increment of the fission gas release as well. Lattice and grain boundary diffusion processes in the fission gas release can be studied by 'tracer diffusion' technique, by which grain boundary diffusion can be estimated and used directly for low burn-up fission gas release analysis. However, even for tracer diffusion analysis, taking both the intragranular grain growth and the diffusion processes simultaneously into consideration is not easy. Only a few models accounting for the both processes are available and mostly handle them numerically. Numerical solutions are limited in the practical use. Here in this paper, an approximate analytical solution of the lattice and stationary grain boundary diffusion in a polycrystalline solid is developed for the tracer diffusion techniques. This short closed-form solution is compared to available exact and numerical solutions and turns out to be acceptably accurate. It can be applied to the theoretical modeling and the experimental analysis, especially PIE (post irradiation examination), of low burn up fission. gas release.
The growth kinetics of intermetallic compound layers formed between the eutectic Sn-3.5Ag solder and the Cu and Ni/Cu pad by solid stateisothermal aging were examined. The interfacial reaction between the eutectic Sn-3.5Ag solder and the Cu and Ni/Cu pad was investigated at 70, 120, 150, $170^{\circ}C$ for various times. The intermetallic compound layer was composed of two phase: $Cu_6Sn_5$(${\varepsilon}-phase$) adjacent to the solder and $Cu_6Sn_5$(${\varepsilon}-phase$) adjacent to the copper and on solder/Ni pad the intermetallic compound layer was $Ni_3Sn_4$. Because the values of time exponent(n) have approximately 0.5, the layer growth of the intermetallic compound was mainly controlled by volume diffusion over the temperature range studied. The apparent activation energy for layer growth of total Cu-Sn($Cu_6Sn_5 + Cu_6Sn$), $Cu_6Sn_5$, $Cu_3Sn$ and $Ni_3Sn_4$ intermetallic compound were 64.82kJ/mol, 48.53kJ/mol, 89.06kJ/mol and 71.08kJ/mol, respectively.

Behavior of solid phase crystallizations (SPC) of RF sputtered and LPCVD amorphous hydrogenated silicon film were investigated. LPCVD films showed the higher degree of crystallinity and larger grain size than sputtered films. The applicable degree of crystallinity was also obtained from sputtered films. The deposition method of amorphous silicon film influenced the behavior of post annealing SPC. Observed degree of crystallinity of sputtered films strongly depended on the partial pressure of hydrogen in deposition. The higher deposition temperature of sputtering provided the better crystallinity after SPC. Due to the high degree of poly-crystallinity, the retardation of larger grain growth was observed on sputtering film.
Calcium phosphate ceramic composites, consisting of hydroxyapatite(HA) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP), were fabricated by solid state sintering in order to investigate the effect of their initial compositions on microstructural evolutions and biocompatibility. All the sintered calcium phosphate ceramics exhibited almost full densification, while the grain growth of the composites increased with an increasing TCP content in the green body. The TCP phase transformed into a Ca-deficient HA phase during sintering via the diffusion of calcium ions from the HA phase into the TCP phase. The phases formed in the composites significantly affected the biocompatibility of the composites. The HA-matrix ceramic composites with TCP had a better cellular response than the pure HA ceramics, presumably due to the newly formed Ca-deficient HA.

Effects of hydrogenation in amorphous silicon rile growths on Solid Phase Crystallization (SPC) was investigated using x-ray diffractometry, energy dispersive Spectroscopy, and Raman spectrum. Interdiffusion of barium(Ba) and aluminum(Al) compounds of corning substrate was observed in both of rf sputtering and LFCVD films under the low temperature(580$^{\circ}C$) annealing. Low degree of crystallinity resulted from the interdiffusion was obtained. Highly applicable degree of crystallinity was obtained through the mechanical damage induced surface activation on amorphous silicon films. X-ray diffraction intensity of (111) orientation was used to characterize the degree of crystallinity of SPC. Nucleation and growth rate in SPC could be controllable through the employed surface treatment. IIydrogenated LPCVD films showed the superior crystallinity to non-hydrogenated sputtering films. Insignificant effects of activation treatment in sputtered film was of activation treatment in sputtered film was observed on SPC.
Directional solidification of Al-Ti peritetic alloys was carried out using Upward Continuous Casting Process. The morphology of a solid-liquid interface and solidification microstructures were investigated under various crystal growing conditions. The experimental results were compared with those attained by the Bridgman method. The cell spacing of the Al-Ti peritetic alloys and the primary dendrite arm spacing of the Al-Ti peritetic alloys decreased with an increase in pulling speed. The primary ${\beta}$ phase of the Al-Cr and Al-Ti peritectic alloys did not appear in solidification microstructures because of the depleted solute contents in the melt ahead of the solid-liquid interface.

Photodiffusion of silver into chalcogenide thin film is one of the most interesting effects that occurs in chalcogenide glass as it theatrically changes the properties of the initial material and forms a ternary. Programmable Metallization Cell(PMC) Randon Access Memory use for photodiffusion of mobile metal is based on the electrochemical growth and removal of nanoscale metallic pathway in thin film of solid electrolyte. This paper investigates the annling properties on Ag-doped $Ge_{25}Se_{75}$ thin film structure and describes the electrical characteristics of PMC-RAM. The composition of the intercalation products containing Ag is confirmed using X-ray diffraction which shows the formation of Ag-doped $Ge_{25}Se_{75}$.
