  • Background: Emerging evidence implicates the platelet-derived growth factor-D (PDGF-D) in many types of human solid tumors. We investigated whether PDGF-D plays an important role in endometrial cancer (EC) in relation to clinicopathologic phenotype, angiogenesis, and patient prognosis. Materials and Methods: We analyzed PDGF-D protein expression by Western blotting in twenty-seven human endometrial cancer tissues, and matched normal endometrial controls collected at the third Affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen University during 2012-2013 (n=27). Immunohistochemical staining was performed using a human PDGF-D antibody on the endometrial cancer patients collected in the same facility during January 2001 and October 2013 (n=152). Patients were followed from the time of primary surgery in 2001-2013 until death or last follow-up. We correlated the PDGF-D expression levels with clinicopathologic parameters and prognosis in human endometrial cancer patients. Results: Compared with matched normal endometrial cases, PDGF-D was up-regulated in endometrial cancer. Expression of PDGF-D protein, found in 78% of the cases, was associated with nonendometrioid histologic type (p=0.028), FIGO stage III/IV (p=0.039), >50% solid tumor growth (p=0.048), pelvic LN metastasis (p=0.035) and ER and PR negativity (p=0.04 and 0.002). PDGF-D expression was also significantly associated with expression of VEGF-A (p=0.021). In multivariate analysis, PDGF-D expression proved to be an independent prognostic factor in addition to histologic grade and FIGO stage. Patients with high expression levels of PDGF-D had a significantly poorer overall survival rate compared with patients with no expression. Conclusions: PDGF-D expression is frequently up-regulated in endometrial cancer, and is associated with aggressive features and poor prognosis.

  • Mushroom strains of Polyporales from the genera Coriolus, Trametes, Pycnoporus, Ganoderma, and Formitella were explored in terms of mycelial growth characteristics for the application of mushroom mycelia as alternative sources of materials replacing fossil fuel-based materials. Among the 64 strains of Polyporales, G. lucidum LBS5496GL was selected as the best candidate because it showed fast mycelial growth with high mycelial strength in both the sawdust-based solid medium and the potato dextrose liquid plate medium. Some of the Polyporales in this study have shown good mycelial growth, however, they mostly formed mycelial mat of weak physical strength. The higher physical strength of mycelial mat by G. lucidum LBS5496GL was attributed to its thick hyphae with the diameter of 13 mm as revealed by scanning electron microscopic analysis whereas the hyphae of others exhibited less than 2 mm. Glycerol and skim milk supported the best mycelial growth of LBS5496GL as a carbon and a nitrogen source, respectively.

  • Solid typed organic fertilizer from cattle manure may Increase plant root growth with the residual effect on soil fertility if it was applied directly into root system. It may also increase labour efficiency by simplifying the work process of manure application to soil. This research was carried out from May to October 1999 to study the fertility prolongation effects of bar typed organic fertilizer from poultry manure by analysing plant growth model compare with those of the chemical fertilizer or powder typed manure. The results showed that the bar typed organic fertilizer increased growth rates of shoot and root system with extending the effect of its fertility by slow releasing on pepper plant. Especially, solidifying organic manure into the bar type made possible the application of cattle manure under plastic mulching. And it also has benefits on simplifying the application process of the fertilization and effect on an extending soil fertility.

  • The most effective conditions of in vitro culture were studied for mass propagation of Pteris cretica 'Wilsonii'. Spores of the species germinated within 7 weeks. The greatest proliferation was obtained with Knop and Hyponex media, but growth was more effective in Hyponex medium. MS medium induced necrosis of prothalli in all strength of nitrogen and sucrose except in case of 0% sucrose. Hyponex medium supplemented with 1% sucrose and 0.6% agar promoted propagation and growth of prothalli. In Hyponex medium, optimal inoculation method was homogenization, but in MS medium dividing colonies of prothalli was more effective. Culturing on solid medium was more effective than liquid culture method. Liquid culture induced necrosis of prothalli. Shaking cultured prothalli showed good growth, but propagation was inhibited compared to those cultured on solid medium.

  • Estimating the high tuber solids needs a simulation system on potato growth, and its development should be obtained by using agricultural elements which analyze the relationship between crop growth and agricultural factors. An accurate simulation to predict solids level against climatic change employs a calculation of in vivo energy consumption and bias for growth and induction shape in a slight environmental adaptation. So, to calculate in vivo energy consumption, this study took a concept of estimate of the amount of basal metabolism in each tuber. In the validation experiments, the results of measuring solid accumulation of potatoes harvested at dates suggested by simulation agreed with the actual measured values in each regional field during the growth period of years from 2006 till 2010. The mean values of tuber solids level and inter-annual level variation in validation experiments were predicted well by the simulation model. And also, the results of validation experiments represent that concentration of tuber solids were due mainly to the duration of sunshine, above 190 hours per a month, and the cumulative amount of radiation, above 2,200 $MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, of the effective growth period.

  • The single crystal of CdTe was grown by modified 6 zone Bridgman method under the conditions of excess Te and excess Cd. To prevent the constitutional supercooling, the crystal growth was done under the temperature gradient of $17^{\circ}C/cm$ in front of the solid /liquid interface and the growth rate was 3mm/hr. The grain morphologies and the growth mechanism were investigated in excess Te and excess Cd conditions. The grain size of excess Te crystal was increased with an increase of the distance from the tip but, in the case of excess Cd crystal, single crystal was not obtained because of the cavities due to the excess Cd vapors so that the grain size was not increased with an increase of the distance from the tip. In addition, the growth of single crystal of CdTe was done with repeated necking ampoule. It was found that the necking had no effects on the grain selection because the cavities trapped in the necking portion acted as heterogeneous nucleation sites.

  • Single crystal growth of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ by the solid state crystal growth method was attempted. Seed crystals of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ were pressed into pellets of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ + 2 wt% $BaCO_3$ and heat-treated at temperatures between $1150^{\circ}C$ and $1250^{\circ}C$ for up to 100 hours. Instead of single crystal growth taking place on the seed crystal, BaO diffused into the seed crystal and reacted with it to form a polycrystalline reaction layer of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$. The microstructure, chemical composition and structure of the reaction layer were studied using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), x-ray Diffraction (XRD) and micro-Raman scattering and confirmed to be that of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$. XRD showed that the reaction layer shows a strong degree of orientation in the (h00)/(hk0) planes in the sample sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$. $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ layers with a degree of orientation in the (hk0) planes could also be grown by heat-treating an ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ seed crystal buried in $BaCO_3$ powder.

  • In $BaTiO_3-NaNbO_3$ system, complete series of solid solution occurs and $30BaTiO_3{cdot}70NaNbO_3$ composition is congruently melted. Single crystals of $30BaTiO_3{cdot}70NaNbO_3$, composition were grown by Czochralski method in this investigation. Single crystals with dimensions of 15 - 20mm diameter and 20 - 30mm length, were grown at the pulling rate of 2.0mm/h and the rotation rate of 5.0 -l0rpm. Core structures were found in the grown crystals and inclusions, cellular boundaries existed at the core region. The origin of core occuring was unstability of the crystal- melt interface due to the poor conductivity of latent heat through the crystal during the crystal growing process. Obtained crystals were optically homogeneous except the core region and showed high optical transmittance in the visible range.

  • Early weaning is a means of breaking the disease cycle from sow to piglet as well as capitalising on the enormous growth potential of the pig. However, the transition from milk to dry diets results in a growth check. Feeding of supplemental milk, fermented to reduce pH and enterotoxigenic bactetial proliferation, may be a means of gradually weaning pigs on to solid feed. This study involved 216 pigs weaned from the sow at 12 days of age, allocated to groups of 6 males and 6 females per weaner pen and allowed ad libitum access to a pelleted diet. In addition, half the pigs were given supplemental fermented skim milk for the first 8 days after weaning. Feeding supplemental fermented milk increased feed intake (104 vs. 157 g DM/d, p=0.011), average daily gain (-3 vs. 112 g/d, p<0.001) and feed conversion efficiency (0.01 vs. 0.81, p=0.003) over the first 8 days after weaning. The improvements observed in the supplemented pigs continued to be augmented such that, by 42 days of age, the pigs that had received supplemental fermented milk were heavier (9.6 vs. 11.5 kg, p=0.003) than their unsupplemented counterparts. Feeding fermented supplemental milk to early-weaned pigs can improve growth performance in the immediate and subsequent post-weaning period.

  • Langasite (LGS) is a material hoped to meet needs required of new base materials for future communication devices (e.g.SAW filters). In this study, synthesis of new materials was pursued by developing new compounds with the host structure of Langasite in hopes to obtain materials with improved characteristics; compounds including $La_3$$Ta_{0.5}$$Ga_{5.5}$$O_{14}$(LTG)and $La_3$$Nb_{0.25}$$Ta_{0.25}$$Ga_{5.5}$$O_{14}$(LNTG) were synthesized by solid state reactions. Characteristics of the compound synthesized in question were determined. The single crystals of Langasite-type were grown using the Czochralski method. The growth conditions for LTG and LNTG were studied and were found to be similar to those of LGS. The growth characteristics of LNTG were observed by studying etch pit formation density along the crystal length.
