Plant Growth Promoting Activities of Some Rhizosphere Bacteria and their Effect on Brassica rapa Growth

  • The necessity to develop economical and eco-friendly technologies is steadily increasing. Plant growth promoting rhizomicrobial strains PGPR are a group of microorganisms that actively colonize plant roots and increase plant growth and yield. Pot experiments were used to investigate the potential of some rhizobacterial strains to enhance the Brassica rapa growth. Microbial strains were successfully isolated from the rhizosphere of Panax ginseng and characterized based on its morphological and plant growth promotion characters. Surface disinfected seeds of Wisconsin Fast B. rapa were inoculated with the selected PGPR microorganisms. The different pots treatments were inoculated by its corresponding PGPR ($10^7cfu\;mL^{-1}$) and incubated in the growth chamber at $25^{\circ}C$ and 65% RH, the light period was adjusted to 24 hours (day). NPK chemical fertilizer and trade product (EMRO, USA) of effective microorganisms as well as un-inoculated control were used for comparison. Plants harvested in 40 days were found to have significant increase in leaf chlorophyll units and plant height and also in dry weight of root and shoot in the inoculated seedlings. Root and shoot length and also leaf surface area significantly were increased by bacterial inoculation in sterile soil. The study suggests that Rhodobacter capsulatus and Azotobacter chroococcum are beneficial for B. rapa growth as they enhance growth and induced IAA production and phosphorus solubilization. This study presents some rhizomicrobial strains that significantly promoted growth of Wisconsin Fast Plant B. rapa in pot experiment under different soil conditions.

스트로브잣나무의 조림지역에 따른 산지별 생장반응 (Growth Performance of Pinus strobus at Four Plantations in Korea)

  • 스트로브잣나무의 생장을 산지별, 조림지별로 조사 분석한 결과, 국내에서 가장 우수한 생장을 나타내는 산지는 North Carolina, 가장 우수한 조림지는 춘천이었는데, 측정형질 공히 산지보다는 조림지에 따른 생장의 차이가 큰 것으로 나타났다. 형상비 분석을 통한 수목 생장은 비교적 안정적이었으며, 조림지별로 수령에 따라 매우 다른 양상을 나타냈다. 스트로브잣나무의 생장 강수량, 안개일수, 고도, 토양의 모래함량과 정의 상관관계가 인정되었으며, 연령 간 높은 정의 상관관계를 나타냄으로서 유령기 생장순위가 중기까지 그대로 유지되어 우수 산지 조기 선발의 가능성이 높은 것으로 판명되었다.

  • This study was conducted with two objectives ; one was to select the suitable soybean cultivars for cultivation in paddy field and the other was to establish the environment-friendly rotational cropping system of soybean instead of rice in paddy field. In order to evaluate growth adaptation and yields, Eve soybean cultivars were cultivated in Yeoncheon, Keonggi province, with two cultivation methods such as level row and high ridge. Growth of the top plants, such as stem length, number of branches, diameter of stem, were higher in high ridge than in level row, however, the differences among the cultivars were bigger than those between the cultivation methods. Dry weight of top plant was significantly different among the cultivars during whole growth stages, however, it was higher in level row than in high ridge at V5 stage while it became higher in high ridge as growth progressed. Roots were more developed in high ridge than in level row during whole growth stages. T/R ratio in level row was higher than that in high ridge. During whole growth stages, significant differences were observed among the cultivars in growth and yields in each cultivation method and yields of Eunhakong was the highest. In results, number of nodules and T/R ratio at V5 stage, number of pods at R2 stage, and number of seeds and T/R ratio at R5 stage had highly correlated with yields, respectively.

Comparison of Environment, Growth, and Management Performance of the Standard Cut Chrysanthemum 'Jinba' in Conventional and Smart Farms

  • Background and objective: This study was conducted to compare the cultivation environment, growth of cut flowers, and management performance of conventional farms and smart farms growing the standard cut chrysanthemum, 'Jinba'. Methods: Conventional and smart farms were selected, and facility information, cultivation environment, cut flower growth, and management performance were investigated. Results: The conventional and smart farms were located in Muan, Jeollanam-do, and conventional farming involved cultivating with soil culture in a plastic greenhouse, while the smart farm was cultivating with hydroponics in a plastic greenhouse. The conventional farm did not have sensors for environmental measurement such as light intensity and temperature and pH and EC sensors for fertigation, and all systems, including roof window, side window, thermal screen, and shading curtain, were operated manually. On the other hand, the smart farm was equipped with sensors for measuring the environment and nutrient solution, and was automatically controlled. The day and night mean temperatures, relative humidity, and solar radiation in the facilities of the conventional and the smart farm were managed similarly. But in the floral differentiation stage, the floral differentiation was delayed, as the night temperature of conventional farm was managed as low as 17.7℃ which was lower than smart farm. Accordingly, the harvest of cut flowers by the conventional farm was delayed to 35 days later than that of the smart farm. Also, soil moisture and EC of the conventional farm were unnecessarily kept higher than those of the smart farm in the early growth stage, and then were maintained relatively low during the period after floral differentiation, when a lot of water and nutrients were required. Therefore, growth of cut flower, cut flower length, number of leaves, flower diameter, and weight were poorer in the conventional farm than in the smart farm. In terms of management performance, yield and sales price were 10% and 38% higher for the smart farm than for the conventional farm, respectively. Also, the net income was 2,298 thousand won more for the smart farm than for the conventional farm. Conclusion: It was suggested that the improved growth of cut flowers and high management performance of the smart farm were due to precise environment management for growth by the automatic control and sensor.

인천연안 해역의 Vibrio속 세균분포 및 증식특성 (Distribution and characteristic of growth of Vibrio spp. in Incheon coastal area)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of environmental factor such as temperature, salinity, turbidity, pH and dissolved oxygen on the growth of Vibrio spp.. In this survey, total 56 seawater samples were obtained from 8 different sites of the Incheon coastal area during the periods from april 2008 to october 2008. Enumeration of Vibrio spp. was determined by using the most probable number(MPN) procedure. Isolation rates of V. parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus, V. cholerae in all samples tested were 44.0%, 21.4% and 13.1%, respectively. The enumeration of Vibrio spp. was very low correlated with water temperature and pH and negatively correlated with salinity, dissolved oxygen and turbidity. We found salinity to be the parameter most highly correlated with the enumeration of Vibrio spp. The highest rate of antibiotic resistance of V.vulnificus and V.parahaemolyticus was Cefazolin(11.5%), Ampicillin(70.8%), respectively.

Effect of Slurry Composting Biofiltration (SCB) Liquid Manure on Shoot Growth and Fruit Qualities of Peach (Prunus persica L.) and Soil Chemical Properties in Orchard

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of slurry composting and biofiltration (SCB) liquid manure application on shoot growth, fruit qualities and soil chemical properties in peach orchard. SCB liquid manure was fertigated ten times from April to October in SCB plot, whereas chemical fertilizer was treated two times as basal and additional fertilizers in control plot. The shoot growth, leaf nitrogen and potassium content, soil exchangeable K, fruit weight and yield were higher in SCB plot than in control. Soluble solid content and acidity, soil organic matter, soil available phosphate and soil exchangeable Mg showed no significant difference between treatments, and the leaf calcium and magnesium content were lower in SCB plot than in control. In conclusion, fertigating SCB liquid manure in peach orchard has positive effects on fruit weight and yield, and it is suggested that periodical soil testing is needed because of the possibility of K accumulation in SCB liquid manure treated soil when the orchard is fertigated based on the soil nitrogen content.

  • We studied algal growth-related water quality of the Dongbok lake which is the drinking water reservoir for the Gwangju municipality. Peridinium cinctum and several diatomic algal species frequently caused water bloom throughout the lake from early spring to late autumn. With the heaviest predominance of Peridinium cintum in May 2003, COD was 13.7 mg/I in the surface layer. Highly turbid surface water with 46.8 mg/I of SS was also caused by Perdinium bloom. Peridinium bloom decisively eliminated cyanobacterial growth in the lake, otherwise cyanobacterial bloom resulted. Dense algal layer was confined in the upper several meters of the water column above the thermocline, which gives relatively algae-free water in deeper layer suitable for drinking source water supply. Upon collapse of thermocline, water quality of the surface layer was improved while deeper layer was deteriorated in terms of water quality. This paper deals with some details of water quality changes with algal growth in the Dongbok lake past two years.

고장력강의 부식피로에 미치는 용액온도의 영향에 관한 연구 (Study on effect of solution temperature on corrosion fatigue of high strength steel)

  • A study has been made of the corrosion fatigue of high strength low alloy steel in 3.5% NaCl solution under tension stress for solution temperature being 25.deg. C, 55.deg. C and 85 .deg. C. The main results obtained are as follows; 1) The corrosion fatigue crack growth rate curve could be divided into the First Region, the Second Region and the Third Region. 2) The corrosion fatigue crack growth rates in the First Region and the Second Region were Arrhenius temperature-dependent in this test range. The apparent activation energies for the corrosion fatigue cack growth rate were found to be 2000cal/mol in the First Region and 3700 cal/mol in the Second Region. 3) Hematite (Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$) as the hexahedral crystal and magnetite (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$) as the octahedral crystal were observed in the corrosion products on the corrosion fatigue fracture surface at 85.deg. C and the anode fusion seem to be generated in the crack tip region at high temperature. 4) The complex environment effect ratio which was defined by the ratio of fatigue crack growth rate in corrosion environment to that in air might be considered not only a criterion estimating the effect of environment quantitatively but also an important parameter in the selection of the design stress for the fail safe design. The complex environment effect was not greater than ten in this test.

생태복원지에 식재된 낙엽활엽수종의 이식 후 생장량 분석을 통한 관리기간 설정 연구 (Management Period Setting Study of through Analysis of the Growth Amount after Planting of Deciduous Broadleaf Species Planted in Ecological Restoration Sites)

  • 이식 과정을 통해 식재된 수목은 뿌리 절단, 수관 훼손과 같은 극단적인 교란으로 인해 식재 직후 생장량은 급격히 감소한다. 이후 시간이 경과하면서 원래의 생장량을 회복하는데 이때 소요되는 시간은 수종별로 차이가 있다. 따라서 이식 후 활착을 위한 수목관리를 위해 수종별 연간생장량의 변화를 분석하여 적정 관리 기간을 설정할 필요가 있다고 판단하였다. 이에 본 연구에서는 수변생태벨트 조성 지역에 식재된 낙엽활엽수를 대상으로 생장량을 분석하고 그 결과를 바탕으로 적정 관리 기간을 제안하고자 하였다. 이식과정에서 수목 활착율을 높이기 위해 시행하는 사전 작업인 뿌리돌림, 단근, 가지치기 등으로 인해 식재 직후의 생장량 둔화는 일반적인 현상이다. 이후 시간이 경과하면서 원래의 생장량을 회복하게 되는데, 소요되는 시간은 수종별, 식재 환경 등에 따라 차이가 존재할 수 있다. 연구결과 대부분의 수목은 이식 직후 급격한 생장량 감소를 보이는 것으로 나타났으며. 이후 수종별로 상이하긴 하나 대부분 2년 이후부터 서서히 생장량을 회복하는 것으로 나타났다. 수종별 생장량을 분석한 결과 공통적으로 이식 직후 급격한 생장량 감소를 보인 후, 이식전의 생장 수준을 회복하기 까지는 수종에 따라 2~4년 정도의 시간이 필요한 것으로 확인되었다. 결과적으로, 생태복원 및 오염물질 저감이라는 본 사업의 목적에 부합하기 위해서는 식재한 수목의 하자율 개선이 필요하며, 이를 위해서는 적정한 기반환경을 조성하는 것 외에 최소 2년간의 수목 관리기간을 설정하는 것이 필요하다.
