This study looked for Mode status of each for fatigue crack growth behavior about the repeat load of mode I and the static load of mode II. The experiment was performed in the state of the repetition frequency of the sine wave 10Hz, the stress ratio 0.1, maximum load 300kg.f, a static load 0, 100, 200, 300kg.f, As the experimental results, in mode of static load, while the load value increases, the crack growth rate is slower as the energy of a crack mixing grows. Mode I and the power mode II get an influence each other in the direction of crack propagation path, but as they eventually get closer to the breaking point of the crack growth, it is dominated by the mode I.
The growth of a spherical vapor bubble contained in a large body of upper convected Maxwell fluid is theoretically analyzed under the devolatilization condition of polymer by using a Galerkin FEM in the Lagrangian frame. Using the finite element technique, a fully explicit numerical scheme is developed both for the calculation of pressure distribution and for the tracking of bubble surface. Oscillatory behavior in bubble radius is observed during growth and the oscillatory behavior is found to be due to the interaction of mass transfer resistance and elasticity. It is found that the elasticity of fluid accelerates the growth and removal of volatile component. It is also found that the bubble growth in the devolatilization of polymers is affected by both mass transfer resistance and viscoelasticity of fluids.
High temperature materials in service are subjected to mechanical damage due to operating load and metallurgical damage due to operating temperature. Therefore, when designing or assessing life of high temperature components, both factors must be considered. In this paper, the effect of tensile hold time on high temperature fatigue crack growth and long term prior thermal aging heat treatment on creep rupture behavior were investigated using STS 316L and STS 316 austenitic stainless steels, which are widely used for high temperature components like in automotive exhaust and piping systems. In high temperature fatigue crack growth tests using STS 316L, as tensile hold time increased, crack growth rate decreased in relatively short tensile hold time region. In long term aged specimens, cavity type microcracks have been observed at the interface of grain boundary and coarsened carbide.

Contact fatigue damages on the rail surface, such as head checks and squats are a growing problem. The fatigue cracks forming on the contact surface grow according to load and lubricating conditions and may end up breaking the rail. Rail fracture can be avoided by preventing the cracks from reaching the critical length. Therefore, the crack growth rate needs to be estimated precisely according to the conditions of the track and load to develop a maintenance plan against rail damages. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanism of cracks initiation and growth on a rail due to repetitive rolling contact. In this study, we have investigated the crack growth behavior on the rail surface by using the twin-disc tests and the finite element analysis.
Fatigue crack growth behaviors of Cr-Mo steels developed recently for thick-wall pressure vessel were investigated. Experiments in accordance with ASTM E647 standard were performed for 1/2 inch CT specimens of $2^(1/4)$Cr-1Mo and 3Cr-IMo steels in gaseous environments, hydrogen gas of 10 atm, 1 atm and argon gas of 1 atm. Fatigue crack growth rates were observed and effects of gaseous hydrogen and argon on the crack growth behavior were discussed.
This paper was conducted the fatigue crack growth test on the base metal and weld joint of bimaterial(carbon-stainless steel), carbon steel and stainless steel. As the result, the fatigue crack growth rate of weld joint on the stainless-stainless steel is faster than stainless base metal, and weld joint on the carbon-carbon steel heat affected zone is slower than carbon base metal. And fatigue crack growth rate of carbon-stainless steel weld joint and heat affected zone is similar to the behavior of stainless base metal. In conclusion, weld joint of bimaterial is stable in the fatigue crack growth behavior.
Nucleate pool boiling experiments with constant wall temperature were performed using pure R1l3 for subcooled, saturated, and superheated pool conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain the constant wall temperature and to measure the instantaneous heat flow rate accurately with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Images of bubble growth were taken at 5,000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The bubble geometry was obtained from the captured bubble images. The effect of the pool conditions on the bubble growth behavior was analyzed using dimensionless parameters for the initial and thermal growth regions. The effect of the pool conditions on the heat flow rate behavior was also examined. This study will provide good experimental data with precise constant wall temperature boundary condition for such works.
An assessment of creep-fatigue crack behavior is required to ensure the structural integrity for high temperature components such as fast breeder reactor structures or thermal power plant components operating at an elevated temperature. In this study, an evaluation of creep-fatigue crack growth has been carried out according to the French assessment guide of the RCC-MR A16 for austenitic stainless steel structures. The assessment procedures for creep-fatigue crack growth in the recent version of the A16 (2007 edition) have been changed considerably from the previous version (2002 edition) and the material properties (RCC-MR Appendix A3) have been changed as well. The impacts of those changes on creep-fatigue crack growth behavior are quantified from the assessments with a structural model. Finally the assessment results were compared with the observed images obtained from the structural tests of the same structural specimen.
The growth behavior of recombinant Escherichia coli cells having plasmid pIF-III-B, which carries human alpha-interferon gene under the control of lpp promoter, lac promoter and lac operator, was studied by using of various E. coli host strains. Expression of the alpha-IFN gene is controllable by using inducer IPTG because the plasmid also contains lacI gene which produces lac regressors. The repressors block the transcription of alpha-IFN gene. There were considerable differences in cell growth according to the host strains used. Cell growth was inhibited not only by plasmid pIF-III-B itself but also by the induction of alph-a-IFN gene expression. Growth inhibition caused by the plasmid itself was more serious than that caused by the induction of alpha-IFN gene expression.
Cracking problems which high temperature plant components suffer during long-term service, occur very often at welded locations. The crack occurs due to accumulated creep damage near fusion line or at heat affected zone (HAZ). However, most of the studies on creep crack growth behavior have been performed with matrix metal not wit welded metal due to the difficulty of interpreting the test results. In this study, creep crack growth rates were measured with C(T) specimens whose cracks were formed along the fusion line or HAZ. The measured crack growth rates were characterized by {TEX}$C_{t}${/TEX}-parameter derived for elastic-primary-secondary creeping material. Since contribution of primary creep was significant for the tested 1Cr-0.5Mo steel, its effect was carefully studied. Effects of crack tip plasticity and material aging were also discussed.
