The efficacy of Chromolaena odorata leaf flour components (CO) to increase the growth performance, non-specific immune activity, and resistance against Vibrio parahaemolyticus of whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) culture was evaluated. To this purpose, whiteleg shrimp post larvae were fed on diets supplemented with 0 and a 1.5 g CO/kg diet for 45 days in a pond. After feeding trials, the shrimps were identified for their growth parameters, collected, and injected with V. parahaemolyticus, then their non-specific immune activity and resistance to V. parahaemolyticus was observed for 14 days. Findings showed that CO increased the average body weight (7.71 g, 37%), weight gain (7.69 g, 40%), and specific growth rate (13.23%/day, 5.7%) as compared to the control. In addition, CO supplementation also increases shrimp's hematologic and immune activity (total hemocyte counts [6.8 × 107 CFU/mL, 242.9%], differential hemocyte counts [27%, 142.1%], and prophenoloxidase activity [0.085%, 566.7%]). Finally, shrimp resistance to V. parahaemolyticus infection also increased after CO supplementation, with survival rates of 73.33% as compared to 23.33% for the control. It suggests that C. odorata leaf flour component supplementation at an optimal dose in the diet may be an effective strategy to increase growth and resistance to bacterial disease with reduced mortality in shrimp farms.

Due to the recent impact of global warming, heavy rainfall and droughts have been occurring regardless of the season, affecting the growth of Italian ryegrass (IRG), a winter forage crop. Particularly, delayed sowing due to frequent heavy rainfall or autumn droughts leads to poor growth and reduced winter survival rates. Therefore, techniques to improve yield through additional sowing in spring have been implemented. In this study, the growth of IRG sown in Spring and Autumn was compared and analyzed using vegetation indices during the months of April and May. Spectral data was collected using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) equipped with a hyperspectral sensor, and the following vegetation indices were utilized: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index; NDVI, Normalized Difference Red Edge Index; NDRE (I), Chlorophyll Index, Red Green Ratio Index; RGRI, Enhanced Vegetation Index; EVI and Carotenoid Reflectance Index 1; CRI1. Indices related to chlorophyll concentration exhibited similar trends. RGRI of IRG sown in autumn increased during the experimental period, while IRG sown in spring showed a decreasing trend. The results of RGRI in IRG indicated differences in optical characteristics by sowing seasons compared to the other vegetation indices. Our findings showed that the timing of sowing influences the optical growth characteristics of crops by the results of various vegetation indices presented in this study. Further research, including the development of optimal vegetation indices related to IRG growth, is necessary in the future.
Viability, early growth and sex ratio of induced gynogenetic diploid bagrid catfish (Leiocassis ussuriensis, Siluriformes) were examined. Survival rates of gynogenetic diploids and normal bi-parental diploids up to 180 days post hatching were not significantly different (P>0.05), and consequently resulted the mean percent survivals of 76% (gynogens) and 78% (bi-parental progeny) at the end of growth trial. Growth in both body weight and total length of gynogenetic diploids was also similar to those of normal diploid controls (P>0.05). Gynogenetic bagrid catfish displayed a similar level of ovarian development when compared to bi-parental diploid females, as judged at 10 weeks post hatching. Sex ratio of bi-parental progeny was normal 1:1 whereas all-femaleness was observed in gynogenetic progeny (P<0.05), suggesting that the genetic sex determination mechanism of this species should be XX-XY based female homogamety.
This study was conducted to monitor the growth and development of Abies koreana seedlings in the Hallasan Mountain. Accordingly, the obtained results indicate that the number of A. koreana seedlings increased by 2.6 and 4.8 times in the Yeongsil and Jindallaebat areas, respectively, over the 10-year period. Most of these seedlings were found to be growing on moss-covered rocks. The average tree height over the last 10 years was obtained as 20.4 cm in the Yeongsil area and 3.6 cm in Jindallaebat with growths of 4.1 cm and 1.4 cm, respectively over the last 2 years. Of all the mature trees that were surviving in 2009, 6 died in Yeongsil in 2014 (with an additional 4 in 2018) and 13 in Jindallaebat in 2016. Over the 10-year period, the diameter at breast height of the trees in Yeongsil and Jindallaebat has increased by an average of 0.6 cm and 4.2 cm. Similarly, an average of 6.8 cones was found in the Yeongsil area in 2014 and 26.3 in Jindallaebat in 2016. However, in 2018, no additional cones were found in the former, although an average of 1.4 cones was observed in the latter. With respect to the average temperature and relative humidity, no significant difference could be observed between two monitored areas from 2016 to 2018. However, in July 2017 and February 2018, the average temperature was higher in the Jindallaebat area, while relative humidity was higher in Yeongsil, there by possibly affecting cone growth and flowering between areas. These results indicate the survival and growth of A. koreana seedlings in the Hallasan Mountain is sensitive to the environments of each area. Hence, continuous monitoring of the environment changes and in-depth studies on the flowering and fruiting of A. koreana seedlings needs to be carried out in order to analyze the relationship between their survival rates and changes in weather conditions.
In Nam-myeon coastal area of southern sea, Korea, the following hydrobiological conditions prevailed during 1997: water temperature: 12.6 ~24.5 $^{\circ}C$ ; Salinity: 27.32 ~33.$10 \textperthousand$, Dissolved oxygen: 7.05 $ml/L$ and Chlorophyll a: 1.69 ~ 7.40 $\mu $/L. Phytoplankton, dominated by Ceratium sp, peaked during June-July. Mean growth rates of the bay scallop of selected and non-selected groups cultured for 185 days in this area from July to December, 1997 were 0.17 and 0.19 mm/day for shell height, and 0.17 and 0.16 g/day for total weight, respectively. Maximum predicted values of shell height, calculated by von Bertalanffy growth model, were 54.98 mm for the selected and 52.62 mm for the non-selected groups. Survival of the selected and non-selected groups was 80.0 and 87.0%, respectively.

This study was conducted to investigate optimal conditions for cutting propagation of the strawberry cultivar "Sulhyang" through the collection methods of cuttings (runners tips), leaf number of cuttings, and cutting time. Cuttings were collected from the mother plant in the nursery bed (MP) and plants after fruit harvest (HP); the leaf number of cuttings was 0, 1, and 2, and the cutting time was at one-week intervals from June 4 to July 9. The survival rates for MP and HP cuttings were notably high, reaching 99.5% and 98.7%, respectively, but no significant difference was found. The number of roots were higher in MP cuttings, and there was no significant difference in crown and leaf growth. The fruit yields were 419.2 and 428.4 g, for MP and HP cuttings, respectively. The survival rates according to leaf number of cuttings were 98.1% and 98.3% for 1 and 2 remaining leaves, respectively, and remarkably lower at 25.3% for no remaining leaves. The root numbers were 26.0 and 26.3 for 1 and 2 remaining leaves, respectively, compared with 23.5 for no remaining leaves, with no significant differences in crown and leaf growth. The fruit yields were 424.4 and 421.5 g for 1 and 2 remaining leaves, respectively, and 396.7 g for no remaining leaves. The survival rates according to cutting time was over 97.2% in all cutting time without any difference in each treatment. The root, shoot, and crown of the nursery plant before planting showed the best growth in the cuttings on June 4 and 11, resulting in the highest fruit yields of 433.3 and 426.4 g, respectively, with the lowest yields at 384.5 g for cutting time on July 9. Both MP and HP materials proved suitable for strawberry cuttings. The optimal leaf number for cuttings was at least 1, and the optimal cutting time in Gyeongnam area was evaluated as around June 4-11.
The dietary value and fatty acids composition for the hatched neonates from the resting eggs of marine roofers, Brachionus plicatilis and B. rotundiformis were compared with that for mass-cultured rotifers (control) by feeding them to larvae of flounder (Paralichthy olivaceus) and parrot fish (Oplegnathus fasciatus). Resting eggs were mass-produced in $1~4m^3$tanks by feeding Chlorella sp. and baker's yeast. The B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis eggs were preserved at $5^{\circ}C$ in darkness for 3 and 5 months, respectively, and hatched at $28^{\circ}C$ under continuous light. The hatched neonates from the resting eggs and mass-cultured rotifer, which was used as a rontrol were fed to fish larvaes. The growth and survival rates of parrot fish larvae fed on the neonates from the resting eggs of B. rotundiformis were similar to those of fish larvae fed on the control rotifer. And the growth and survival rates of the flounder larvae with neonates from the resting eggs of B. plicatilis were similar or higher than those fed the control rotifer. Also the fatty acids composition of the neonates from the resting eggs of B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis were similar to those from the control rotifers. This results showed that the hatched neonates from resting eggs of rotifer could be used as an effective diet for flounder and parrot fish larvae.

Recently, the occurrences of extreme flooding and drought, often in the same areas, have increased due to climate change. We tested the hypothesis that wetland species could help upland species under flood conditions; that is, the roots of wetland crops may supply $O_2$ to the roots of upland crops by a series of experiments conducted in both humid Japan and semi-arid Namibia (See Iijima et al, 2016 and Awala et al, 2016). Firstly, flooding tolerance of upland-adapted staple crops-pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) mix-cropped with rice (Oryza spp.) was investigated in glasshouse and laboratory experiments in Japan. We found a phenomenon that strengthens the flood tolerance of upland crops when two species-one wetland and one drought tolerant-were grown using the mixed cropping technique that results in close tangling of their root systems, hereinafter referred to "close mixed-planting". This technique improved the photosynthetic and transpiration rates of the upland crops subjected to flood stress ($O_2$-deficient nutrient culture). Oxygen transfer was suggested between the two plants mix-cultured in water, implying its contribution to the phenomenon that improved the physiological status of upland crops under the simulated flood stress. Secondly, we further tested whether this phenomenon would be expressed under field flood conditions. The effects of close mixed-planting of pearl millet and sorghum with rice on their survival, growth and grain yields were evaluated under controlled field flooding in semi-arid Namibia during 2014/2015-2015/2016. Single-stand and mixed plant treatments were subjected to 11-22 day flood stress at the vegetative growth stage. Close Mixed-planting increased seedling survival rates in both pearl millet and sorghum. Grain yields of pearl millet and sorghum were reduced by flooding, in both the single-stand and mixed plant treatments, relative to the non-flooded upland yields, but the reduction was lower in the mixed plant treatments. In contrast, flooding increased rice yields. Both pearl millet-rice and sorghum-rice mixtures demonstrated higher land equivalent ratios, indicating a mixed planting advantage under flood conditions. These results indicate that mix-planting pearl millet or sorghum with rice could alleviate flood stress on dryland cereals. The results also suggest that with this cropping technique, rice could compensate for the dryland cereal yield losses due to field flooding. Mixed cropping of wet and dryland crops is a new concept to overcome flood stress under variable environmental conditions.
In this study, the toxicity of chlorothalonil was investigated using survival rate and population growth rate of a marine rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, typically used in live food in marine aquaculture systems. The survival rate of B. plicatilis was determined after 24 h of exposure to chlorothalonil (0.010-0.156 mg L-1). Population growth rate of B. plicatilis was calculated after 72 h of exposure to chlorothalonil (0.078-1.250 mg L-1). The survival rate and population growth rate of B. plicatilis exposed to chlorothalonil in single-dose toxicity assessment showed concentration-dependent reductions. Survival rates of B. plicatilis exposed to chlorothalonil had the following values: NOEC, 0.020mg L-1; LOEC, 0.039 mg L-1; and EC50, 0.057 mg L-1. Population growth rate of B. plicatilis exposed to chlorothalonil had the following values: NOEC, 0.156 mg L-1; LOEC, 0.313 mg L-1; and EC50, 0.506 mg L-1. When the residual concentration of chlorothalonil in the marine coastal area was more than 0.039 mg L-1, it had a toxic effect on B. plicatilis, a zooplankton. This paper provides toxicity values that can be used as baseline data for organizing environmental standards of chlorothalonil. It also provides insight into toxic effects of chlorothalonil on other non-target organisms.

Purpose: In oral tongue cancer, the degree of tumor invasion has a significant effect on the prognosis. We hypothesized that the destruction of extracelluar matrix and neovascularization are related to tumor infiltration mechanism. By studying the the tissues of early stage oral tongue cancer patients, we are intend to clarify the invasion related factors in oral tongue cancer. Material and Methods: To demonstrate the invasion process in early T-stage oral tongue cancer, the expressions of extracellular matrix destruction related molecules(MMP2, MMP9) and neovascularization related molecule(VEGF) were observed by immunohistochemical study. Also, immunohistochemical staining of CD31 was done for quantification of neovascularization. With the experiment showed above, we analyzed relationship between expression of each substances and tumor invasion depth, tumor free survival rates and cervical lymph node metastasis rate in early T-stage oral tongue cancer. Results: The expression rates of MMP2, MMP9, VEGF in 38 early oral cancer patients were 52.6%, 78.9% 52.6%, respectively. Significant correlation was found between the VEGF expression and microvessel density showed by CD31 immunohistochemical staining(p<0.001). VEGF expressions were significantly related with tumor invasion depth(p=0.002). The tumor free survival rate of those patients with VEGF-positive tumors was significantly poorer than in those with VEGF-negative tumors(p=0.019). Conclusion: This results indicate that VEGF is a useful marker for predicting the tumor invasion in patients with early tongue cancer and could be used as a beneficial factors in defining operative field and prognosis.
