In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out to study the behavior of growth and coalescence of multi-surface cracks which were initiated at the semi-circular surface notches, and a simulation program was developed to predict their growth and coalescence behavior. By comparing the experimental result with those of the simulation based on SPC(surface point connection), ASME and BSI(British Standards Institution) conditions, we tried to enhance the reliance and integrity of structures. This shows that the simulation result has utility for fatigue life prediction.

The goal of the current research was to assess the influence of the growth rate of Nocardia amarae on its overall metal binding capacity. Batch sorption isotherms for cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and nickel (Ni) showed that Nocardia cells harvested from chemostat cultures at a dilution rate of $0.33d^-1$ had a significantly higher metal sorption capacity than cells grown at 0.5 and $1d^-1$. The cell surface area estimated using a dye technique indicated that pure N. amarae cells grown at a lower growth rate had a significantly more specific surface area than cells harvested from a higher growth rate operation. Accordingly, this difference in the specific surface area seemed to indicate that the higher metal sorption capacity of the slowly growing Nocardia cells was due to their higher specific surface area.

Generally almost all fatigue crack growth is affected by mode I. For this reason a study on mode I has concentrated in the field of fracture mechanics. However the fatigue crack initiation and growth in machines and structures usually occur in mixed mode loading. If there is any relationship between the cause of fracture in mixed mode loading and fracture surface, fracture surface pattern will be the main mean explaining reasons of fatigue fracture and obtaining further information about fracture process. In this paper low point shear-fatigue test with Aluminum alloy hi 5083-O is carried out from this prospect and then the mixed mode distribution of fracture surface is examined from the result after identifying the generation of fatigue crack surface pattern. It was found from the experimental results that the fatigue crack surface pattern and the fatigue crack shear direction are remarkably consistent. Furthermore It is possible that the analysis of distribution of mixed mode through the fatigue crack surface pattern.

In this study, the nanosized ZnS thin films that can be used for fabrication of blue light-emitting diodes, electro-optic modulators, and n-window layers of solar cells were grown by the solution growth technique (SGT), and their surface morphology and film thickness and grain size dependence on the growth conditions were examined. Based on these results, the quantum size effects of ZnS were systematically investigated. Governing factors related to the growth condition were the concentration of precursor solution, growth temperature, concentration of aq. ammonia, and growth duration. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the ZnS thin film obtained in this study had the cubic structure ($\beta$-ZnS). With decreasing growth temperature and decreasing concentration of precursor solution, the surface morphology of film was found to be improved. Also, the film thickness depends largely on the ammonia concentration. In particular, this is the first time that the surface morphology dependence of ZnS film grown by SGT on the ammonia concentration is reported. The energy band gaps of samples were determined from the optical transmittance values, and were shown to vary from 3.69 eV to 3.91 eV. These values were substantially higher than 3.65 eV of bulk ZnS. It was also shown that the quantum size effect of SGT grown ZnS is larger than that of the ZnS films grown by most other growth techniques.
In order to clarify the effect of overload on crack growth behaviors, fatigue tests for overload were carried out for round plain specimens of SM45C steel. In the experiment, typical semi-elliptical crack shape was found and further crack growth behaviors were tested. Using three types of single overload fatigue tests, Crack growth retardation phenomenon were examined. The growth rate of surface crack(da/dN) during retardation period was analyzed in terms of ${\Delta}K$ and ${\Delta}K_{eff}$. On the growth rate of surface crack analyzed by ${\Delta}K$, the dependence of overload stress levels appears. However, on the growth rate by ${\Delta}K_{eff}$ obtained by Willenborg analysis, there is a non-liner relationship between da/dN and ${\Delta}K_{eff}$ with narrow scatter band.
A numerical analysis has been conducted to investigate a modified floating-zone crystal growth process in which most of the melt surface is covered with a heated ring. The crystal rod is not only pulled downward but rotated around its axisymmetric line during crystal growth process in order to produce the flat interface of crystal growth and the single crystal growth of NaNO3 is considered in 6mm diameter. The present study is made from a full-equation-based analysis considering a pulling velocity in all of solid and liquid domains and both of solid-liquid interfaces are tracked simultaneously with a governing equation in each domain. Numerical results are mainly presented for the comparison of the surface shape of rotational crystal rod with that of no-rotational crystal rod and the effects of revolution speeds of the crystal rod. Results show that the rotation of crystal rod produces more its flat surface. In addition, the shape of crystal growth near the centerline is more concaved with the increase in the revolution speed of crystal rod. The flow pattern and temperature distribution is analyzed and presented in each case. As the pulling velocity of crystal rod is increasing, the free surface of the melt below the heated ring is enlarged due to the crystal interface migrating downward.
The epitaxial growth of Ge on the clean and surfactant(Sn) adsorbed surface of Ge(111) was studied by the intensity oscillation of a RHEED specular spot. In the case of epitaxial growth without the adsorbed surfactant, the RHEED intensity oscillation was stable and periodic up to 24ML at the substrate temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Therefore the optimum temperature for the epitaxial growth of Ge on clean Ge(111) seems to be $200^{\circ}C$. However, in the case of epitaxial growth with the adsorbed surfactant, the irregular oscillations are observed in the early stage of the growth. The RHEED intensity oscillation was very stable and periodic up to 38ML, and the $d2{\times}2$ structure was not charged with continued adsorption of Ge at the substrate temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. These results may be explained by the fact that the diffusion length of Ge atoms is increased by decreasing the activation energy of the Ge surface diffusion, resulted by segregation of Sn toward the growing surface. From the desorption process, the desorption energy of Sn in Ge $\sqrt{5}{\times}\sqrt{5}$ structure is observed to be 3.28eV.
Response surface model was developed for predicting the growth rates of Salmonella enterica sv. Typhimurium in tryptic soy broth (TSB) medium as a function of combined effects of temperature, pH, and NaCl. The TSB containing six different concentrations of NaCl (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10%) was adjusted to an initial of six different pH levels (pH 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10) and incubated at 10 or $20^{\circ}C$. In all experimental variables, the primary growth curves were well $(r^2=0.900\;to\;0.996)$ fitted to a Gompertz equation to obtain growth rates. The secondary response surface model for natural logarithm transformations of growth rates as a function of combined effects of temperature, pH, and NaCl was obtained by SAS's general linear analysis. The predicted growth rates of the S. Typhimurium were generally decreased by basic (9, 10) or acidic (5, 6) pH levels or increase of NaCl concentrations (0-8%). Response surface model was identified as an appropriate secondary model for growth rates on the basis of coefficient determination $(r^2=0.960)$, mean square error (MSE=0.022), bias factor $(B_f=1.023)$, and accuracy factor $(A_f=1.164)$. Therefore, the developed secondary model proved reliable predictions of the combined effect of temperature, NaCl, and pH on growth rates for S. Typhimurium in TSB medium.
