  • Objective: This experiment investigated the effect of dietary net energy (NE) concentrations on growth performance and NE intake of growing gilts. Methods: Five diets were formulated to contain 9.6, 10.1, 10.6, 11.1, and 11.6 MJ NE/kg, respectively. A metabolism trial with 10 growing pigs (average body weight [BW] = $15.9{\pm}0.24kg$) was conducted to determine NE concentrations of 5 diets based on French and Dutch NE systems in a $5{\times}5$ replicated Latin square design. A growth trial also was performed with five dietary treatments and 12 replicates per treatment using 60 growing gilts (average BW = $15.9{\pm}0.55kg$) for 28 days. A regression analysis was performed to predict daily NE intake from the BW of growing gilts. Results: Increasing NE concentrations of diets did not influence average daily gain and average daily feed intake of growing gilts. There was a quadratic relationship (p = 0.01) between dietary NE concentrations and feed efficiency (G:F), although the difference in G:F among treatment means was relatively small. Regression analysis revealed that daily NE intake was linearly associated with the BW of growing gilts. The prediction equations for NE intake with the BW of growing gilts were: NE intake (MJ/d) = $1.442+(0.562{\times}BW,kg)$, $R^2=0.796$ when French NE system was used, whereas NE intake (MJ/d) = $1.533+(0.614{\times}BW,kg)$, $R^2=0.810$ when Dutch NE system was used. Conclusion: Increasing NE concentrations of diets from 9.6 to 11.6 MJ NE/kg have little impacts on growth performance of growing gilts. Daily NE intake can be predicted from the BW between 15 and 40 kg in growing gilts.

  • This work was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary phytase on growth performance and excreta excretion of growing-finishing pigs for 7 days. Eighty three crossbreeds (Yorkshire ${\times}$ Landrace ${\times}$ Duroc) of growing-finishing pigs were used in this work, and divided into 6 treatments. Six treatments were compared in a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement with 2 groups (5 replications/group, 8 head/replications) with the additive phytase and 3 groups(growing I, II and finishing phase) with growing phases. Initial weights with growing phases were $58.6{\pm}3.9$. $83.2{\pm}3.8$ and $111.4{\pm}5.4kg$, respectively. Body weight gain was high in phytase treatment (P<0.01) and low at finishing phase. Feed conversion ratio was high in no phytase treatment and at finishing phase (P<0.05). Feed and water intakes have no significant difference with phytase existence and growing phases. Feces excretion decreased with growing phase (P<0.05), and was low at phytase treatment (P<0.05). There was no significant difference on urine excretion (P>0.05). Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) intake was not found significant difference with phytase and growing phases. N excretion had no significant difference on phytase existence and growing phase (P>0.05), but P excretion decreased at phytase treatment (P<0.05). N and P excretion ratio was low at phytase treatment (P<0.05). Finally, dietary phytase resulted in improvement of growth performance and reduction of excreta excretion of growing-finishing pigs.

  • Watering operation for oyster mushroom growing houses is regarded as drudgery and time consuming farm operation for growers. Most of mushroom growing beds in oyster mushroom growing houses are designed as two-row with four floor beds, therefore the watering and ventilation between the bed floors are much difficult for farmers because of its structural design. The study aimed to reduce the watering operation and improve the mushroom growing environment through the humidification and air supply on mushroom growing beds. Results showed that appropriate size of nozzle is between 0.8~0.5ml/s for the humidification and higher than the 2.0ml/s for the watering. The optimum water supply pressure was regarded as between 1.0~2.0MPa and the uniform distribution of droplet on the bed showed on air flow speed of 14m/s. The prototype was equipped with twin nozzle with. the humidification nozzle of 0.85ml/s and watering nozzle of 5.0ml/s, and the air blast fan with the air speed of 10m/sec in each air spout. In the field test in a practical scale mushroom growing house, it was well operated dependant on the set desire by a electric control unit. The machine can be practically used as air blast watering and air blast humidification for oyster mushroom growing farms without manual.

  • Three serotypes (O+A+Asia1 type) of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine were injected into cloven-hoofed animals in Korea after the nationwide spread of FMD at the end of 2010. This study was conducted to investigate FMD antibody development after FMD vaccination, and to determine whether there was a significant correlation between the antibody titer of the sow and the antibody titer of the growing pigs. The antibody titer (percentage inhibition [PI] titer) of the sow (gilt) after FMD vaccination was maintained at a level higher than 50 (P<0.05) for 5 months. A higher PI titer for the 1-month-old growing pigs corresponded with greater inhibition of the PI titer of the vaccinated growing pigs (P<0.05). A negative correlation (P<0.05) between the PI titer of the 1-month-old growing pigs and the PI titer of 3-month-old growing pigs, 4-month-old growing pigs after FMD vaccination at 2 months, 3months was identified, with a coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of 0.274. Thus the PI titer of the growing pigs was inhibited to a greater degree when vaccination was performed at 2 months of age than at 3 months. However, many other factors likely influence growing pigs' PI titer in addition to the PI titer of the sow and age at vaccination, given that the coefficient of determination was somewhat lower.

  • In order to determine whether maturation inhibiting activity(MIA) in the cytoplasm of growing follicular oocytes would suppress the cleavage of the embryonal cells, the growing oocytes were fused with the 2 or 4 cell blastomeres and then examined for the nuclear phase of the fused giant cells 24 hr after culture. A significant number of the giant cells(60%) composed of growing mouse oocyte and 2 cell mouse blastomere(1/2) in interphase has contained 2 nuclei 24 hr after culture and most of the giant cells (90%) composed of the growing oocyte and 4 cell blastomere(1/4) also contained 2 nuclei after culture. The unfused blastomeres or the isolated blastomeres cultured without fusion treatment cleaved one cell cycle under the same culture condition. In contrast, the nucleus of the growing oocytes was disintegrated and the chromosome condensed when fused with 2 cell blastomere in mitosis. The growing rat oocytes also suppressed the nuclear disintegration of the mouse embryonal cells during culture. The data presented here showed that MIA in the growing mammalian oocyte inhibited the cleavage of the embryonal cells in interphase stage, but not in milosis stage.

  • BACKGROUND: The growing season (GS) has been understood as a useful indicator for climate change due to high relationship with increasing temperature. Hear this study was conducted to examine changes in the thermal GS over South Korea from 1970 to 2013 based on daily mean air temperature for assessing the temporal and spatial variability in GS. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three GS parameters (starting date, ending date, and length) were determined at 19 stations throughout South Korea. The results show that the GS has been extended by 4.2 days/decade between 1970 and 2013 on average. The growing season start (GSS) has been advanced by 2.7 days/decade and the growing season end (GSE) has been delayed by 1.4 day/decade. Spatial variation in the GS parameters in Korea are shown. The GS parameters, especially GSS, of southeastern part of Korea have been changed more than that of northwestern part of Korea. The extension of GS may be more influenced on earlier onset in spring rather than later GSE. CONCLUSION: Under climate change scenarios, the GS will be more extended due to delayed GSE as well as advanced GSS. And These are more notable in the northeastern part of Korea.

  • This experiment was designed to assess the physical and chemical properties of growing media substituted with a range of increasing concentrations of pretreated wood and to relate these properties to plant growth responses. For preparing the growing media, each material was combined with rural soil, peat, perlite and pretreated wood. Physicochemical properties studied were similar to ideal substrate ranges for plant growth on growing media, including pretreated wood. Physical properties were also well maintained over time. In comparison to plants growing in 100% rural soil, tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea) in the prepared growing media achieved better growth, especially when using the 50% rural soil + 50% PPW(peat + perlite + pretreated wood, 3:1:6(w/w/w)) and 30% rural soil + 70% PPW (peat + perlite + pretreated wood, 3:1:6(w/w/w)), and showed improved germination percentage. We confirmed the potential use of growing media, including pretreated wood. Furthermore, our results show a correlation among the physicochemical properties of tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea); physical properties were significantly influenced by germination and aerial parts. The root length of physicochemical properties was correlated with bulk density and organic compound (p<0.01).

  • The object of this work was to investigate the influence of growing district and harvest year on calibration for sweetness (Brix) determination of Fuji apple fruit using near infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy, and to develop the robust calibration across these variation. The calibration models was based on wavelength range of 1100∼2500 nm using a stepwise multiple linear regression. A calibration model by sample set of one growing district was not transferable to other growing districts. The combined calibration (data of three growing districts) predicted reasonable well against a population set drawn from all growing districts (SEP=0.69, Bias=0.075). A calibration model by sample set of one harvest year was not also transferable to other harvest years. The combined calibration (data of three harvest years) predicted well against a population set drawn from all harvest years (SEP=0.53, Bias=0.004).
