  • The scope of homogeneous Lewis acid-catalyzed benzo[N,N]-heterocyclic condensation was expanded to include the use of various metal salts not reported in the literature and $SnCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$ was finally selected. Among various solid supports activated with $SnCl_2$, heterogeneous $SnCl_2/SiO_2$ proved to be the most effective and significantly higher conversions were achieved compared to $SnCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$ itself. The results of TG-DTA and BET indicated that dispersed $SnCl_2$ coordinates with surface hydroxyl groups of silica leading to formation of stable Lewis acid sites. Low catalyst loading, operational simplicity, practicability and applicability to various substrates render this eco-friendly approach as an interesting alternative to previously applied procedures.

  • 4-Chlorobenzoyl (CB) group-attached multi-walled carbon nanotube (c-MWNT) was prepared via a direct Friedel-Crafts acylation of MWNT with 4-chlorobenzoic acid (CBA) in a $P_2O_5$/poly(phosphoric acid) medium. c-MWNT with a maximum chlorine content of 5.3 wt% (CB group content of 20.9 wt%) was obtained by controlling the amount of CBA during the reaction. Using a self-condensation polymerization of 4-chlorobenzenethiol (CBT) to poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS), MWNT-g-PPS was prepared by adding c-MWNT of chlorine content of 5.3 wt% during the self-polymerization of CBT and removing homo PPS after polymerization in order to increase the interfacial interaction between PPS and MWNT. Thermal and surface properties of the MWNT-g-PPS were characterized. The results showed that PPS was formed on the surface of c-MWNT by the condensation of c-MWNT and CBT.

  • Deflected 4-way panels of ceiling air conditioners produced by injection molding process have caused dew condensation at the edge of products. In order to prevent this drawback with reducing weight and deformation, this study proposed renovated process adopting microcellular foaming. According to results from 2-sample t-test and analysis of variance(ANOVA), the critical factors affecting weight were melt temperature and injection speed. In addition, the vital effects on deformation were structure at the edge, mold temperature and cooling time. Optimal conditions of these parameters were derived by regressive analysis with CAE and response surface method(RSM), and then applied to an actual design and process stage to analyze performance. As a results, it clearly showed that new process improved process capability as well as reduced both weight and deformation by 18.8% and 71.9% respectively compared to the conventional method.

  • We previously identified a new heparinase inhibitor fungal metabolite, named CRM646-A, which showed inhibition of heparinase and telomerase activities in an in vitro enzyme assay and antimetastatic activity in a cell-based assay. In this study, we elucidated the mechanism by which CRM646-A rapidly induced nucleus condensation, plasma membrane disruption and morphological changes by increasing intracellular Ca2+ levels. Furthermore, PD98059, a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK) inhibitor, inhibited CRM646-A-induced nucleus condensation through ERK1/2 activation in rat 3Y1 fibroblast cells. We identified CRM646-A as a Ca2+ ionophore-like agent with a distinctly different chemical structure from that of previously reported Ca2+ ionophores. These results indicate that CRM646-A has the potential to be used as a new and effective antimetastatic drug.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the apical sealing according to the depth of the System B Plugger tip when root canal was filled with gutta-percha and sealer by Continuous Wave of Condensation technique in the Type IV canal. 50 simulated resin blocks with J-shaped curvature canals were instrumented by ProTaper (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballagiues, Switzerland) Ni-Ti files using the crown-down technique. Type IV canals were made using a broken ProTaper F3 Ni-Ti file for making a ledge at 3mm short from the working length. And ProTaper F1 Ni-Ti file was used for perforating resin block. The prepared Type IV canals were randomly divided into three experimental groups of 15 each according to the depth of System B Plugger tip. All of experimental groups were obturated with Continuous Wave of Condensation technique. The length of gutta-percha and sealer in lingual of the Type IV canals was measured with a measuring digital calliper under magnifying glass (${\times}2.3$). The results are as follows : 1. In control group, there was no gutta-percha and sealer in lingual canal. 2. 3 mm group showed relatively more gutta-percha than 5mm or 7 mm group (p<0.05). 3. 7 mm group did not showed gutta-percha and relatively more void were observed than 3mm or 5 mm group. (p<0.05) In conclusion, within the limits of the results of this experiment, the 3 mm depth of System B Plugger tip was acceptable for obturating the Type IV canal.

  • The chemistry background of the Maillard reaction focused on pyrazines and factors affecting the reaction products were reviewed. The Maillard reaction, also called a non-enzymatic browning reaction, is quite complex and generates numerous reaction products. In processed foods, it is generally accepted as a key reaction to produce flavor components. Specially, pyrazines possess an important impact character on the roasted foods with other heterocyclic compounds. The Maillard reaction is initiated by condensation between reducing sugar and amino group, and N-glycosylamines are produced via Schiff base with dehydration of water. After the rearrangement of the N-glycosylamines, they follow transformation into deoxyhexosones which are reactive intermediates. Degradation and fragmentation are facilitated by rearranged compounds. By condensation, pyrazine, one of the final Maillard products, is generated as a relatively stable form to provide specific aromas. During the processes of the reaction, chemical or physical environmental parameters affect the formation of the products.

  • Mesoporous silicas for heavy metals adsorption were prepared by co-condensation of surfactant as a template and Ludox HS-40 as a silica precursor. Various mesoporous silicas with the introduction of chelating ligands (mercaptopropyl and aminopropyl groups) were synthesized to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The surface modification was conducted with a co-condensation process using the sequential or simultaneous addition of mesoporous silica and high concentration of the organosilane(3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane). These materials have been characterized by elemental analysis, XRD, SEM and TEM analysis. Adsorbents synthesized with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane shows a high loading capacity for Hg(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and anion Cr(VI). Especially the one synthesized with a mercaptopropyl function has the highest adsorption capacity for Hg(II) and Cd(II).

  • One flask synthesis of dithienylmethane and difurylmethane is reported. The reaction of aldehydes with excess furan or thiophene affords the meso-phenyldithienylmethane (DTM) and meso-phenyldifurylmethane (DFM), respectively. The reaction is catalyzed with trifluoroacetic acid or with BF3·O(Et)2. An acyl group is selectively introduced in 1 and 9 position of difurylmethane and dithienylmethane by use of an acid chloride and tin (IV) chloride. The reduction of resulting 1,9-bisacyldifurylmethane or 1,9-bisacyldithienylmethane affords the corresponding 1,9-bis-diol. An acid catalyzed condensation of diol with meso-phenyldipyrromethane followed by oxidation with DDQ gives the porphyrins. The reaction resulted meso-5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21,22-dithiaporphyrin (SSNN) or 15-mesityl-5,10,20-triphenyl-21,22-dioxaporphyrin (OONN), respectively. The formation of small amount of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPPH2) is also observed. The formation of TPP indicates that meso-phenyldipyrromethane is reversibly cleaved and form pyrrole and pyrrylbenzylcarbocation during the condensation. The proton nmr and electronic spectrum of the SSNN and OONN porphyrins are somewhat different from the previously synthesized meso-5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21,23-dithiaporphyrin (SNSN) or meso-5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21,23-dioxaporphyrin (ONON).

  • Three types of network polyesters have been newly synthesized by a two-step condensation reaction by the various combination of several diols and diacids. When these polymer films were thermally treated at $240^{\circ}C$, they exhibited absorptions in a visible range despite the forbidden transition of carbonyl group. When excited at wavelengths above 330 nm, the polymers showed fluorescences in a wide visible range from blue to near yellow. These fluorescence phenomena are due to the formation of certain conjugated structures by the Knoevenagel type self-condensation under the high-temperature thermal treatment. These polymers showed significant difference in the thermal properties as a function of the degrees of chemical crosslinking. They also underwent photodegradation. Highly resolved, fluorescent image patterns were successfully obtained by the photodegradation of malonate group under a strong UV-light irradiation.
