BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the potential of school meals in South Korea as a sustainable tool to reduce carbon emissions by focusing on animal- vs. plant-based protein foods. MATERIALS/METHODS: By using a stratified proportional allocation method, 536 out of the 11,082 schools nationwide were selected including 21 kindergartens, 287 elementary-, 120 middle- and 108 high schools. A total of 2,680 meals served for 5 consecutive days (June 21-25, 2021) were collected. We analyzed the average serving amounts of protein foods (animal- vs. plant-based) per meal and then, calculated the estimated average amounts of carbon emission equivalents per meal by applying the conversion coefficients. The t-test and analysis of variance were used for statistical analyses (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The average serving amount of animal-based protein foods per meal was 12.5 g, which was approximately 3 times higher than that of plant-based ones (3.8 g) (P < 0.001); the Meat-group had the highest average amount of 17.0 g, followed by Egg-group (9.6 g), Fish-group (7.6 g), and Beans-and-Nuts-group (3.8 g) (P < 0.05). Specifically, pork (25.1 g) was ranked first, followed by poultry (19.6 g), processed meat products (18.0 g). The estimated average amount of carbon emission equivalents of animal-based protein foods per meal was 80.1 g CO2e, which was approximately 31 times higher than that of plant-based ones (2.6 g CO2e) (P < 0.001); the Meat-group had the highest average amount of 120.3 g CO2e, followed by Fish-group (44.5 g CO2e), Egg-group (25.9 g CO2e), and Beans-and-Nuts-group (2.6 g CO2e) (P < 0.05). Specifically, processed meat products (270.8 g CO2e) were ranked first, followed by pork (91.7 g CO2e), and processed fish products (86.6 g CO2e). CONCLUSIONS: The results implied that school meals with plant-based alternatives could be a sustainable tool to improve carbon footprint.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of PBL-based astronomical observation on the science process skills and scientific attitudes in elementary science-gifted students. To verify research problems, the subjects of this study were forth-grade students selected from one classes of an elementary science-gifted class in Busan National University of education : the research group is composed of twenty students who were participated in PBL-based astronomical observation program. During four weeks, the PBL-based astronomical observation program instruction was executed in the reasearch group. Post-test showed following results: First, the research group showed a significant improvement in the science process skill. We look into detailly this, the research group showed a significant improvement in the basis science skill. The sub-factor 'expectation' of the science process skill effects a significant improvement. Second, the research group showed a significant improvement in the scientific attitudes. In conclusion, PBL-based astronomical observation program was more effective on science process skill and scientific attitudes. However, since the study has a limit on an object of the study and the applied program, the additional studies need to be conducted with an extended comparative group and program.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of web-based learning for ventilator practice on the knowledge and clinical competence of nursing students. Method: The research design was a non-equivalent control group pre-post non-synchronized design. Twenty five nursing students were collected for the experimental group from August 23 to November 26, 2004 and nineteen nursing students for the control group from August 22 to November 25, 2005. All subjects experienced clinical practices in an intensive care unit of a hospital in G city for 2 weeks. The web-based learning for ventilator practice was conducted in the experimental group only. The data were analyzed with t-test and ANCOVA using SPSS 10.1 program. Result: The 2 week web-based clinical practice learning significantly improved the knowledge scores for the experimental group, however, there was no significant differences in the score for the clinical competence between experimental and control group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that a self-directed web-based learning for ventilator practice of nursing students can facilitate the knowledge of care for a ventilated patient. Therefore, faculties should develop a variety of web-based multimedia content programs for clinical instruction based on clinical situation.
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effects of simulation-based education on communication skill and clinical competence in maternity nursing practicum. Methods: This study used a non-equivalent control pretest-posttest design. The simulation-based education in maternity nursing practicum consisted of two clinical situation scenarios pertaining to patients with normal and high-risk deliveries. The control group consisted of 35 students in 2010 and the experimental group consisted of 35 students in 2009. The experimental group was given the simulation-based education using a high-fidelity patient simulator over 3 sessions, whereas the control group was given a conventional pre-clinical practice orientation before maternity nursing clinical practicum. Data were collected using a questionnaire, which included questions to assess communication skill and clinical competence. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: Members of the experimental group, who received the simulation-based education, showed significantly higher communication skill and clinical competence scores than the control group (t=-2.39, p = .020; t=-2.71, p = .009). Conclusion: The simulation-based education in maternity nursing practicum is effective in promoting communication skill and clinical competence. With application of diverse clinical situation scenarios, it is recommended to develop and apply simulation-based education using a high-fidelity simulator in the area of maternity nursing.
The purpose of this study was to develop an instructional model using new technologies aiming to secure students' learnability and to enhance the public school values in the rural districts. The present study attempts to suggest a practical e-learning instructional and learning model named Group Dynamics- based Debate Instructional Model', which utilizes unique technology environment conditions in most. To develop the model, concepts of group dynamics and debate-based instructional models were reviewed. And in-service teachers in two public schools in a certain rural district were interviewed in order to collect and analyze their needs for a teaching and learning model with which they utilizes unique technology conditions as environment in most. Based on literature review and the need analysis, a group dynamics-based debate instructional model has been suggested in terms of conceptual model. And then expert assessment composing of five in-service teachers from the model schools was implemented twice in order to acquire the suggested model validation, followed by the model validation by a group of experts. Then a revised group dynamics-based debate instructional model has been finally suggested. The group dynamics-based debate instructional model is expected to build up members' affective connection in the process, to generate group value, or collective intelligence, and to establish positive discussion culture. Furthermore, beyond of just utilizing the existing materials, learners are encouraged to develop and collect their own materials and data such as expert's interview, or public news for their argument or refutation. In doing so, learners enhance their learnability as well as accountability, prompting self-directed learning, and establishing appropriate discussion culture resulting in positive learning outcomes.
The purpose of this study is to find the effect of group counseling program based on reality therapy that is developed by researcher and to investigate whether the program can decrease the academic stress of elementary school students. For this study, firstly a framework for academic stress decrease programs is established and a program is developed in accordance with the framework. Secondly, in order to verify the effect of the program, both quantitative and qualitative methods were applied to 6th grade students through a academic stress test. Experimental group and control group is composed of 18 students, each. During a two month-experimental period, group counseling program based on reality therapy was implemented to the experimental group for 10 sessions but not to the control group. The program included nicknaming, recreation activities to promote friendliness among participants and other various activities to decrease the academic stress. The results of the quantitative and statistical research are as follows: First, group counseling program based on reality therapy is effective to decrease of elementary school students' academic stress. Second, sub factor(such as perceptions of academic stress cause, symptoms of academic stress)of academic stress is significantly decreased in experimental group. But no significant difference is found in control group. Third, for some sub factor(career, friend-relationship, house-environment, behavior-symptom), an independent-sample test and a paired-sample test showed different results: the paired-sample test showed no significant differences in experimental group while the independent-sample test showed significant decrease of academic stress. The results of the qualitative research based on student commentaries on the program is as follows: First, experimental group students report that the program based on reality therapy was effective to decrease of academic stress. Second, experimental group students' commentaries shows that students could remember the WDEP, 'act' factor and acquire the solution of academic stress. Third, for a group counseling, students reported the interest about positive feedback, searching on themselves, growth of human-relationship. This means that the program developed on this study is suitable for group counseling program. In conclusion, this study proves that group counseling program based on reality therapy is effective to decrease of elementary school students' academic stress by increasing individual internal-control. Therefore, it is necessary that we should develop and apply similar program to elementary school students in other to decrease students' academic stress. school students in other to decrease students' academic stress.
Objective: The purpose of the this study was to test the effect of the alcohol preventive educational program for elementary school students through developing the web-based learning instruments. It will prevent the serious alcohol problem for adolescents and be the opening-learning according to learner's needs beyond the traditional classroom learning which has limitation of space and time. Method: This research designed based on web-based instructional system design by In-sung Jong(1997). This study was performed on the elementary school students who are the six grade in M city. The number of experimental group was 72 and control group's number was 72, totaled 144. Data were collected from September, 30th, 2004 to November, 5th, 2004, totaled 37days. The pretest and the posttest for web-based alcohol preventive education program were tested about knowledge and attitudes toward drinking. After the performance, the posttest was also tested the effect of this program under items by the interest of web-based learning, satisfaction, adequateness of material and so on. The data analysis was done using SPSS/Win 11.0 program. Result: The results of this study are as follows: 1) Compared with control group, experimental group which was educated the web-based alcohol preventive educational program for elementary school students was improved the knowledge on drinking, thin there was no significant difference. However, it showed significant difference between two groups after education. It was, therefore, partially supported. 2) Compared with control group, the experimental group which was educated the web-based alcohol preventive educational program for elementary school students showed significant difference in attitudes toward drinking. After education, it showed no significant difference attitudes. toward drinking between experimental group and control group. It was, therefore, partially supported. 3) The degree of learning motivation was an average.595 of 1 after learning applied to by the web-based alcohol preventive educational program for elementary school students. Then, it is relatively more higher than the result of existing studies. So, it showed that the motivation was done well. 4) Correlation among study variables It showed that there was the significantly positive correlation between knowledge and attitudes toward drinking of pretest experimental group. Also, there was the significantly positive correlation between attitudes toward drinking and learning motivation of pretest and posttest experimental group. Conclusion: I found that the web-based educational program helps the elarning process for the health education in the school field which the instructional materials lack. As a result, the web-based education motivates the learner's pleasure and promotes the learners interest. Also, it is possible for students to learn according to their own learning pace, repeated learning and active learning participation in the necessary parts. Therefore, I think the web-based educational program is worth as a intervention to get positive influence for the health education.
