For its essential importance as a resource, sustainable development of groundwater has been major research interests for many decades. Conventional characterization of aquifer and groundwater has relied on borehole data from observation well. Although borehole data provide useful information on yield and flow of groundwater, it is often difficult and sometimes costly to estimate the spatial distribution of groundwater in entire aquifer. Geophysical probing is an alternative techique that provides such information due to its capability to image subsurface structures as well as to delineate spatial distribution of hydraulic parameters. This study presents various technical information about geophysical probing to estimate main characteristics of aquifer for groundwater exploitation. Subsequently, we analyzed representative cases, in which geophysical methods were applied to identify the location of the groundwater, classify freshwater and brine, derive hydraulic constants, and monitor groundwater.

Borehole geophysical techniques were adopted for characterizing aquifer properties of crystalline rock formation in Bongmyong borehole test site, Kangwon National University. Specific fractures and/or fracture zones accompanying groundwater flow were delineated well by high resolution flowmeter and dilution measurements, and could be confirmed fromconventional well log methods. These geophysical techniques have been proved to be the most effective in aquifer characterization in crystalline rock formation.

It is a common practice to extract water from the ground for domestic, agricultural or industrial uses or to lower the groundwater level for construction work. An accurate prediction of ground settlement Is sometimes crucial when groundwater is pumped. This case study have shown that drawdown of the groundwater table may cause ground subsidence. Many settlement gauges was installed in the vicinity of a pumped well to measure the surface settlement. The relationships between the level of groundwater drop and surface settlement is investigated In this research.
In this paper, a groundwater hydrological study of the Gyeongju well during the Silla period is conducted to investigate how sufficiently the Gyeongju well supplied water demand at the time. It is assumed that the current geology and soil condition in Gyeongju remain similar to the Silla period. Also, the land use and land coverage during the Silla period is estimated based on the current land condition in Gyeongju. Precipitation during the Silla period is analyzed using precipitation data from 1984 to 2014 provided by Gyeonju weather station. Precipitation analysis is applied based on 3 different scenarios; precipitation intensity during the Silla period was Case (1) the same as, Case (2) 30% more, and Case (3) 30% less than the precipitation intensity of the last decade (2005~2014). Furthermore, to observe the use of the well in Gyeongju during droughts, the following condition(Case (4)) is also considered; ten year drought during the Silla period was the same as the ten year drought from 1984 to 2014. Available amount of groundwater development is analyzed using NRCS-CN method. The results show that the potential amount of groundwater in Gyeongju during Silla era was for Case (1) $62,825,272m^3/year$, Case (2) $93,606,567m^3/year$, Case (3) $32,277,298m^3/year$, and Case (4)$32,870,896m^3/year$. Also, it has been shown that $45,260,000m^3$ of groundwater were required to supply to all households in Gyeongju during Silla era. Therefore, if the precipitation intensity during Silla era was similar with the last decade, the groundwater would provide enough supply to all households in Gyeongju. However, in the case that the precipitation intensity during Silla era was 30% less than the last decade or a ten year drought happened, it is predicted that the water use in Gyeongju would have been limited.
A Fortran program was developed to determine the optimal locations of an artificial recharge well. Three objective functions were considered: (1) maximizing the recovery rates, (2) maximizing the injection rates, and (3) minimizing the coefficient of variation of the increased pumping rates. We also suggested a new aggregate objective function which combined the first and the third objective functions. The model results showed that locating the injection well inside the cluster of pumping wells was desirable if either the recovery or the injection rate was taken into account. However, the injection well located outside the cluster evenly increased the pumping rates in existing pumping wells. Therefore, for clustered pumping wells, installing an injection well at the center or the upstream of the pumping wells seems beneficial. For linear arrangement of pumping wells parallel to the constant head boundary, locating the injection well in the upstream was recommended. On the contrary, in case of the linear arrangement perpendicular to the constant head boundary, the injection well installed on both sides of the central part of the pumping wells was preferable.
The increasing frequency of droughts has been increasing the necessity of utilizing subsurface dams as reliable groundwater resources in areas where it is difficult to supply adequate agricultural water using only surface water. In this study, we analyzed the current status and actual conditions of five agricultural subsurface dams as well as the effect of obtaining additional groundwater from subsurface dams operated as one aspect of the sustainable integrated water management system. Based on the construction methods and functions of each subsurface dam, the five subsurface dams are classified into three types such as those that derive water from rivers, those that prevent seawater intrusion, and those that link to a main irrigation canal. The classification is based on various conditions including topography, reservoir location, irrigation facilities, and river and alluvial deposit distributions. Agricultural groundwater upstream of subsurface dams is obtained from four to five radial collector wells. From the study, the total amount of groundwater recovered from the subsurface dam is turned out to be about 29~44% of the total irrigation water demand, which is higher than that of general agricultural groundwater of about 4.6%.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of greenhouse cultivation area and groundwater level changes due to the water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complexes, which are mainly situated along rivers where water resources are easy to secure. The groundwater observation network in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, located downstream of the Nakdong River, was selected for the study area. We classified the groundwater monitoring well into the greenhouse (riverside) and field cultivation areas (plain and mountain) to compare the groundwater impact of water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complex. The characteristics of groundwater level changes classified by terrain type were analyzed using the observed data. Riverside wells have significant permeability coefficients and are close to rivers, so they are greatly affected by river flow and precipitation changes so that water level shows a specific pattern of annual changes. Most plain wells do not show a constant annual change, but observation wells near small rivers and small-scale greenhouse cultivation areas sometimes show annual and daily changes in which the water level drops during winter. Compared to other observation wells, mountain wells do not show significant yearly changes in water level and show general characteristics of bedrock aquifer well with a low permeability coefficient.
A groundwater source heat pump (GWHP) was developed in this study by adapting a borehole heat exchanger with closed-loop and open-loop systems in a new building. In the pilot test building, the air-conditioning on the second floor was designed to employ a closed-loop system and that on the third floor had an open-loop system. The GWHP design is based on the feasibility of groundwater resources at the installation site. For the hydrogeological survey of the study site, pumping and injection tests were conducted, and the feasibility of GWHP installation was evaluated based on the air-conditioning load demand of the building. The site was found to be satisfactory for the design capacity of the thermal load and water quality. In addition, the effect of groundwater movement on the performance of the closed-loop system was tested under three different operational scenarios of groundwater pumping. The performance of the system was sustainable with groundwater flow but declined without appropriate groundwater flow. From long-term observations of the operation, the aquifer temperature change was less than 2℃ at the observation well and 5℃ at the injection well with respect to the initial groundwater temperature. This pilot study is expected to be of guidance for developing GWHPs at fractured rock aquifers.

Environmental pollution is continuously increasing with the economic growth and industrial development. With this trend, soil and groundwater pollution problem has been surfaced as important social issues. Recently, Korean government promulgated the Soil Environment Conservation Act. But there are many problems to control sound soil quality management. Anthropogenic source of pollution such as waste landfill, pesticides, fertilizer, underground storage oil tanks is important as well as natural source such as acid rain and forest fire. The regulation should be expanded to include groundwater preservation as well as soil quality, because soil pollution is closely related to groundwater pollution. Therefore, legal regulations must be expanded to these facilities and take into account technical feasibility and finance.
