  • Numerical models simulating the process of NAPL from contaminated soil or groundwater through steam injection can be a useful tool for designing and evaluating the cleanup strategy under various field conditions. One and two dimensional numerical analyses were conducted based on the governing equations describing the NAPL removal as a non-isothermal, multi-phase and multi component process. Relatively good agreements were obtained between the numerical results and the observations from one-dimensional laboratory experiment, except some discrepancy due to experimental difficulties. Simulation effectively identified the steam displacement process of xylene floating on the water table and TCE sinking on the aquifer bottom in a two-dimensional analysis. Overall, simulation models have a high potential in the design/appraisal of a system for field application of the technique as well as in the examination of complex processes such as vaporization which is hard to identify experimentally.

  • Tunnel collapse often occurs during deep underground tunneling (> 40 m depth) in South Korea. Natural cavities as well as water supply pipes, sewer pipes, electric power cables, artificial cavities created by subway construction are complexly distributed in the artificial ground in the shallow depths of the urban area. For deep tunnel excavation, it is necessary to understand the properties of the ground which is characterized by porous elements and various geological structures, and their influence on the stability of the ground. This study analyzed geological factors for risk assessment in deep excavation in South Korea based on domestic and overseas case study. As a result, a total of 7 categories and 38 factors were derived. Factors with high weights were fault and fault clay, differential stress, rock type, groundwater and mud inrush, uniaxial compressive strength, cross-sectional area of tunnel, overburden thickness, karst and valley terrain, fold, limestone alternation, fluctuation of groundwater table, tunnel depth, dyke, RQD, joint characteristics, anisotropy, rockburst and so forth.

  • In order to prevent slope disasters caused by rainfall, it is very important to quickly exclude rainfall. In Korea, horizontal drainage holes with excellent economic feasibility and construction performance are generally applied as a method to lower the underground water level. However, horizontal drainage holes constructed on the site are often uniformly constructed regardless of the presence or absence of other water or ground conditions, and it is often difficult to expect drainage performance of horizontal drainage holes due to poor maintenance. In this study, an artificial ground was created using model construction and horizontal drainage experiments were conducted to measure the amount of horizontal drainage drain in a certain amount of control area 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and an evaluation table (draft) that can quantitatively evaluate horizontal drainage based on measurements and design documents is proposed as basic data.

  • Conceptual site model (CSM) development and enhancement for contaminated sites assists in identifying data gaps during the site investigation process. In this study, CSM was developed and enhanced for a contaminated site in Korea as a case study. Site Y was scrutinized four times previously. The site profiles for each scrutiny were reorganized based on the scrutiny reports, and the relevant data was utilized to develop and enhance CSMs. CSM for the first investigation was developed in various forms including table, flowchart, diagram, and narrative formats. CSM was enhanced in a stepwise manner by incorporating the updated profile information obtained in next investigation to existing CSM. The hypothetical data gap analysis between each investigation step was established to meet the purpose of the follow-up investigation. This case study showed that CSM is a useful tool to identify the history and current status of contaminated sites and thereby help in planning supplementary investigations for better site characterization.

  • The canals of China·Northern Europe are different from those of Korea in the phases of the times and physical environment as follows. As the coefficient of river regime is high and the slopes of river is high in our country, the sediments are much deposited on the floor and river channels are meandered and the depth of water are low. So we should dredge the river floor and should construct the dams and lock gates. These will cause streams to be late and to be flooded. The rising and falling of groundwater tables may be fatal to the buildings. The ecosystem will be ruined by water pollution and rising of water levels. We are concerned about the economy of the canals, the low velocity of the canals, reduction of the transportation cost, transshipment cost and terminal cost, tourism·leisure-typed waterway and extreme cost of waterway development. It is proper for us to put in good order and control waterway simply by means of annual schedule, not to construct canal.

  • Digital map is utilized for an effective display of the distributions of the hydrogeological variables such as water table height(hydraulic head) and log-transmissivity(lnT) in north Pohang, KyungBug. Specifically the geostatistical method kriging is used to construct the distributions in an unconfined aquifer from a finite set of measured data. The experimental variograms for both the head and lnT suggest spherical models with nugget of 0 and range of 6km. The kriged results by using these variograms show that the head decreases primarily from the west to the east with a large peak in the north-western part and lnT is at the maximum level in the central part with outwardly decreasing trend. The constructed delineation is also used to calculate the flow field in the region. Finite differences with second order consistency are used to calculate the fluxes in the east(x) and north(y) across a vertical cross-section of unit width and height equal to the thickness of the wet zone in the aquifer. It is demonstrated that the flow is dominantly in the east with diverging trend on the eastern hillside of the water table peak. A few convergent spots also appear.

  • Groundwater flow induced by cracks in a buried pipe causes ground loss in the vicinity of it which can lead to underground cavities and sinkhole problems. In this study, the ground collapse mechanism and the failure mode based on an aperture in the pipe located in cohesionless ground were investigated through a series of physical model studies. As the influence parameters, size of the crack, flow velocity in the pipe, groundwater level, ground cover depth and ground composition were adopted in order to examine how each of the parameters affected the behavior of the ground collapse. Influence of every experimental condition was evaluated by the final shape of ground failure (failure mode) and the amount of ground loss. According to the results, the failure mode appeared to be a 'Y' shape which featured a discontinuous change of the angle of erosion when a groundwater level was equal to the height of the ground depth. While in the case of a water table getting higher than the level of ground cover depth, the shape of the failure mode turned to be a 'V' shape that had a constant erosion angle. As the height of the ground depth increased, it was revealed that a mechanism where a vertically collapsed area which consisted of a width proportional to the ground height and a constant length occurred was repeated.

  • To obtain informations on vertical movements of water and solute in rice paddy field during the growing season, soil water contents and bulk electrical conductivities (${\sigma}_a$) were monitored using Time Domain Reflectometry. Soil water contents with depth showed ${\varepsilon}$-shaped profiles constituting of partly saturated zones at top and bottom layers and unsaturated zones (20-100cm) between them. Analysis by fitting with a van Genuchten-type model showed that soil water contents at 60cm were affected by both water supplied from surface water and groundwater, but at 80cm mainly affected by groundwater. Water percolation at the rate of 2cm $day^{-1}$ rates were, but large fluctuation from 10 to 38cm $day^{-1}$ in C1 layer (60-90cm). Therefore, it can be said that any water or solute entering C1 layer is very rapidly transported to C2 layer, especially during the period of high groundwater table staying, and retarded to a relatively constant percolation rate in C2 layer. This can be manifested by the fact that rapid decrease and steady increase of electrical conductivities at 50 and 110cm depth respectively, were found around that period.

  • It has been repeatedly reported that a drainage system of a drained tunnel is deteriorated. And consequently the water pressure on the lining increases with time. However, little research on the watertight tunnel was found in the literatures. According to field measurements, leakage of the undrained tunnel has increased with time, which is completely opposite to the behavior of the drained tunnel. It is evident that the hydraulic deterioration of the tunnel lining changes the water pressure on the lining and the amount of leakage, thus the design coneept in terms of groundwater is not maintained tightly throughout the life time of the tunnel. The Segment lining is generally constructed as watertight. However, it is frequently reported that the leakage in the segment tunnel increases with time. It is also reported that the leakage is generally concentrated at the joints of the segments. In this study structural and hydraulic interaetion of the segment lining due to the hydraulic deterioration of the segments and the joints is investigated using the numerical modeling method. An electric utility tunnel below groundwater table is considered for the analyses. The effects of hydraulic deterioration of the segment lining are identified in terms of ground loading, water pressure and lining behavior. A remedial grouting measure for leakage is also numerically simulated, and its appropriateness is evaluated.
