Groundwater preferentially flows through sediment layers with high permeability such as colluvium. Its flow paths are called groundwater vein streams. An underground temperature survey is a method to locate vein streams by underground temperature anomalies associated with flowing groundwater. A groundwater flow system near an irrigation reservoir located in the upper part of a landslide block was surveyed with this method. After a geomembrane lining was installed in the reservoir, the total cross-sectional area of the vein streams in the aquifer decreased to as little as 0.35 times that before installation of the liner. A change in groundwater quality also indicated that the mixing of groundwater with leaked water from the reservoir stopped after installation of the lining.

The objective of this research was to develop a framework of the Soil Environment Information Management System (SEIMS). In this study, we found that the SEIMS needs to be consisted of three sub-systems (i.e., information input system, DB system, and opening to the public system), which is operated on the Web-GIS basis. Also, we suggested structure and detailed items for each sub-system which are acceptable under the basis of current legal and institutional system. Furthermore, we made several suggestions for future-oriented system. Further researches need to be pursued for developing efficiently the SEIMS, such as 1) DB standards for the SEIMS, 2) guidelines for each cleanup phase, 3) improvement of the SEIMS for groundwater quality, and 4) integrated SEIMS for both soil and groundwater system.

Groundwater recharge characteristics in a fractured granite area, Mt. Geumjeong, Korea. was interpreted using bedrock groundwater and wet-land water data. Time series analysis using autocorreclation, cross-correlation and spectral density was conducted for characterizing water level variation and recharge rate in low water and high water seasons. Autocorrelation analysis using water levels resulted in short delay time with weak linearity and memory. Cross-correlation function from cross-correlation analysis was lower in the low water season than the high water season for the bedrock groundwater. The result of water level decline analysis identified groundwater recharge rate of about 11% in the study area.
During the last several years, the geographic information system(GIS) technology has emerged as a very effective tool for analyzing complicated groundwater system Linking GIS to spatially distributed hydrogeological data and groundwater models offers many advantages in the analysis of urban groundwater system. This paper describes the urban hydrogeological application of GIS in Seoul area. This study constructs an urban hydrogeological database via pre- and post-processing of various types of urban hydrogeological data, such as groundwater-level fluctuation, topogaphic data, water chemistry data, subway pimping station data, tidal effect of the Han River, and hydrogeological parameters. A hydrogeological model has been designed to enable importing data from the database and providing the model output for the repetitive manipulation and display in GIS.

A photovoltaic powered ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis system was tested with a number of natural groundwaters in Australia. The objective of this study was to compare system performance at six remote field locations by assessing the impact of water composition and fluctuating energy on inorganic contaminant removal using a BW30-4040 membrane. Solar irradiance directly affected pressure and flow. Groundwater characteristics (including TDS, salts, heavy metals, and pH), impacted other performance parameters such as retention, specific energy consumption and flux. During continual system operation, retention of ions such as $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ was high (> 95%) with each groundwater which can be attributed to steric exclusion. The retention of smaller ions such as $NO_3{^-}$ was affected by weather conditions and groundwater composition, as convection/diffusion dominate retention. When solar irradiance was insufficient or fluctuations too great for system operation, performance deteriorated and retention dropped significantly (< 30% at Ti Tree). Groundwater pH affected flux and retention of smaller ions ($NO_3{^-}$ and $F^-$) because charge repulsion increases with pH. The results highlight variations in system performance (ion retention, flux, specific energy consumption) with real solar irradiance, groundwater composition, and pH conditions.
It is a well-known fact that groundwater is difficult to be recovered, once it is polluted. Since its damage may continue for a long time, its management is very much necessary. For groundwater pollution managemet, current groundwater quality should be analyzed and its diffusion should be estimated. Such analysis and estimation are greatly enhanced by a GIS. In order to build the GIS, groundwater information management system, various database related to groundwater should be constructed. The system can be utilized to analyze groundwater quality and to help administrative processes of groundwater management. In this study, we analyze No3N diffusion in the groundwater under the study area, a part of Jung-Gu area, by using groundwater analysis subsystem and create the 1/5,000 scale map for the diffusion prediction of groundwater pollution. Although Seoul Metropolitan Government has constructed the 1/25,000 scale hydrogeology map of Seoul area through basic groundwater survey in 1996, the survey data are not sufficient for local groundwater pollution management. The large scaled map constructed in this study is expected to be utilized for the management. The GIS softwares, Arc/Info and Arc/View, are used. MODFLOW and MT3D programs are extensively used to analyze groundwater pollution.
On the basis of sustainable long-term water resources planning, the development of ground water resources should be interlocked with the surface water development In considering the intertemporal equity, overpumping of groundwater may diminish or eliminate the groundwater resources stock of post-generations. Regulatory landuse zoning for groundwater resources recharge area is indispensable measures to prevent groundwater pollution. Adequate treatment of polluted water from various sources such as municipal sewage, industrial wastewater, landfill site leachate, and abandoned boring wells, is also necessary for groundwater protection. To preserve groundwater resources as common property goods, groundwater use tax should be imposed upon the large scale groundwater use. Finally, the establishment of groundwater development license system is recommended to achieve the social optimal production and to avoid external diseconomy.

The aim of the study is to assess groundwater pollution hazard of Pohang city using the DRASTIC system developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Hydrogeological spatial databases of the system include information on depth to groundwater, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topographic slope, hydraulic conductivity, lineament and potential pollution source. With GIS based on these hydrogeological databases and the DRASTIC system, the regional groundwater vulnerability of the study area was assessed. Then the vulnerability was overlaid with potential pollution source and the regional groundwater pollution hazard was assessed by administrative district. From the results of the study, areas where need the counter plan for groundwater pollution and where should be managed for the groundwater pollution, are identified.
This study was conducted to estimate groundwater demand and supply for agricultural activities in a frequent-drought area that requires implementation of optimal distribution plan utilizing the well-network system (WNS). The WNS has been considered as a viable strategic way of supplying groundwater to farmlands by connecting groundwater wells physically or virtually. The study area heavily relied on groundwater resources for irrigation up to 53% due to a lack of surface water resources. Two kinds of methods, HOMWRS software and FAO approach, were used for estimating irrigation water requirements for paddy and upland fields, respectively. During the latest 10 years (2010~2019), the water requirements was estimated to be 1,106 m3/day. The requirements notably increased to 1,121~4,004 m3/day during active farming season (May to September), which exceeded the total yield capacity of pre-existing groundwater wells (2,356 m3/day) in the area. Detailed and definite determination for groundwater demand and supply helped to determine optimal scale parameters of WNS. The WNS has achieved more balanced distribution of groundwater resources for irrigation over the study area.
