  • This paper presents the results of laboratory investigation performed to study the role of different air sparging system parameters on the removal of benzene from saturated soils and groundwater. A series of one-dimensional experiments was conducted with predetermined contaminant concentrations and predetermined injected airflow rates and pressures to investigate the effect of soil type and the use of pulsed air injection on air sparging removal efficiency. On the basis of these studies, two-dimensional air sparging remediation systems were investigated to determine the effect of soil heterogeneity on the removal of benzene from three different homogeneous and heterogeneous soil profiles. This study demonstrated that the grain size of the soils affects the air sparging removal efficiency. Additionally, it was observed that pulsed air injection did not offer any appreciable enhancement to contaminant removal for the coarse sand; however, substantial reduction in system operating time was observed for fine sand. The 2-D experiments showed that air injected in coarse sand profiles traveled in channels within a parabolic zone. In well-graded sand the zone of influence was found to be wider due to high permeability and increased tortuosity of this soil type. The influence zone of heterogeneous soil (well-graded sand between coarse sand) showed the hybrid airflow patterns of the individual soil test. Overall, the mechanism of contaminant removal using air sparging from different soil conditions have been determined and discussed.

  • The flow of groundwater in fractured medium is related to the geometric characteristics of the fracture system. And a fracture aperture and a fracture density are considered as important factor concerning the permeability. Data acquisition of the properties of fracture such as aperture and density is so difficult and has uncertainty. We also cannot know the fracture characteristics through the in-situ tests. We usually obtain the fracture information from a ultrasonic scan logging or borehole television indirectly. Using the deduced results, we can make the fracture system and simulate the groundwater flow and solute transport in the crystalline rock. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the properties of fracture and hydraulic conductivities obtained at the same interval. The properties of fracture are examined by acoustic televiwer and hydraulic conductivities are obtained by constant Pressure injection test. The distributioin of fracture width and fracture frequency shows the log-normal probability plot. And, Results of correlation analysis explain that opened type fractures have proper relation with hydraulic conductivity. But, as though there are semi-opened type fractures or closed type fractures, those have the permeable structure.

  • Since the urban subway is normally constructed under the groundwater level, the drainage system will be one of the most important factors during maintenance period. Therefore, to investigate suitability of the design approach and the construction specification, the inflow and the contents of the groundwater in the Route 5 of Seoul subway system are analysed. From these, the possibility of the design improvement and the economy of the maintenance cost are proposed.

  • Soil washing was applied as a supplementary step of soil remediation at a petroleum oil contaminated site. A soil washing system was designed, assembled, and operated at the site. A field screening method with PetroFlagTM was adopted at the site to find the exact boundary of contaminated area as soil excavation progressed and to verify the concentration of treated soil. The system operation showed the cleanup efficiency of 90% at the compatible cost compared to other methods.

  • This study presents the hydrogeochmical investigation to know the effect of geology and sources for water quality in small potable water supply system at rural area. The results of water quality in Geumsan area showed the 3.2% of water samples exceeded the limit of drinking water standard by bacteria. The hydrochemical investigation results indicated the high EC, Ca and HCO$_3$ in surface water and metasedimentary rocks and this is caused by the dissolution of calc-slicate minerals of metasedimentary rocks.

  • To solve the problems of operating passive mine drainage treatment systems, the In Adit Sulfate Reducing System(IASRS) was suggested. By placing the SAPS inside the adit, the condition of constant temperature of 10~15$^{\circ}C$ can be maintained. The experiments using the models made up by four sections showd good efficiencies in pH control and metal removal rate, but showed still low sulfate removal rate of about 30% with high COB in the begining of the operation.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate in-situ bioremediation ability of Bioil-D, microbial material for oil degradation, at a gas station that had been treated by SVE system. TPH concentrations and total contaminated soil volume were rapidly decreased after Bioil-D treatment. The performance of Bioil-D was also estimated based on the observation of microbial population at the soil samples and $CO_2$ concentration produced at the extraction wells. The field study showed a successful work of Bioil-D.

  • Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation has 148's stations. Total length is 152km and most of the station is located in the basement and Groundwater occur inflow of 700,000 tons per day. Groundwater is treated as a natural flow way instead of artificial ways. Therefore, most of the collection wells is located in the low place or station for the efficient induction and collecting water. Manhole overtopping is occurring frequently because groundwater is concentrated in the drain pipe near the collecting well and heavy rainfall in summer. As a result, ballast contamination and radon levels are increased in tunnel. This paper introduces a solution is increasing overflow in tunnel, which introduces drainage system of non-motorized that uses differencial head between collecting well and manhole.

  • In this study, weight of evidence(WOE) technique based on the bayesian method was applied to estimate the groundwater yield characteristics in the Pocheon area in Kyungki-do. The ground water preservation depends on many hydrogeologic factors that include hydrologic data, landuse data, topographic data, geological map and other natural materials, even with man-made things. All these data can be digitally collected and managed by GIS database. In the applied technique of WOE, The prior probabilities were estimated as the factors that affect the yield on lineament, geology, drainage pattern or river system density, landuse and soil. We calculated the value of the Weight W+, W- of each factor and estimated the contrast value of it. Results by the ground water yield characteristic calculations were presented in the form of posterior probability map to the consideration of in-situ samples. It is concluded that this technique is regarded as one of the effective technique for the feasibility mapping related to detection of groundwater bearing zones and its spatial pattern.
