  • This study developed preliminary assessment methodology for priority listing of soil and groundwater contamination sources, considering source characteristics, local environments and risk receptors. Source characteristics were evaluated by scoring relative risk of contamination sources. Local environments were evaluated by scoring annual rainfall, hydraulic conductivity of aquifer, and annual groundwater use. Risk receptors were evaluated by scoring local population, direct distance to surface water, direct distance to drinking-water wells. Scores of each parameter were allocated by analysing distribution of parameter values obtained from government databases. Distributed scores of source characteristics local environments: risk receptors were 12 : 12 : 12. The preliminary assessment scored 0 to 36 for each soil and groundwater sources. Inventory of soil and groundwater sources consisted of 7 categories. This study applied the preliminary assessment methodology to Manan-Gu, Anyang City, Korea. The number of car repair and washing facility was the largest in the contamination source inventory. Petroleum storage facilities showed the highest assessment score. The preliminary assessment methodology also indicated that Anyang-Dong was the priority section among Anyang-Dong, Suksu-Dong, Bakdal-Dong. This study is the first trial for relative ranking soil and groundwater contamination sources by considering source and local characteristics. Therefore, further researches and revision of the preliminary assessment methodology need to be pursued for various applications.

  • Persulfate (PS) activated with nanosized zero-valent iron (NZVI) was tested as a reagent to remove phenol from groundwater. Batch degradation experiments indicated that NZVI/PS molar ratios between 1 : 2 and 1 : 5 were appropriate for complete removal of phenol, and that the time required for complete removal varied with different PS and NZVI dosages. Chloride ions up to 100 mM enhanced the phenol oxidation rate, and nitrate of any concentration up to 100 mM did not significantly affect the oxidation rate. NZVI showed greater performance than ferrous iron did as an activator for PS. A by-product was formed along with phenol degradation but subsequently was completely degraded, which showed the potential to attain mineralization with the NZVI/PS system. Tests with radical quenchers indicated that sulfate radicals were a predominant radical. The results of this study suggest that NZVI is a promising activator of PS for treating contaminated groundwater.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict appropriate leachate rates and leachate transport velocity through weathered zone and basement rock on the transient condition at Nanji waste landfill. The leachate transport in the Nanji waste landfill is analyzed using MODFLOW(A Modular 3-D Finite Different Groundwater Flow Model) model which simulates three dimension groundwater flow and MT3D(A Modular Three Dimentional Transport Model) model which describes three dimensional transport for advection, dispersion and chemical reaction of dissolved constituents in groundwater system on the transient condition. Leachate production rates are estimated by HELP(Hydraulical Evaluation of Landfill Performance) model and used weather records for recent 10 years. Leachate transport is predicted by a change of leachate level to after/before established HDPE, established slurry wall and wells.

  • A total of 23 springs distributed in the southern and northern sides of Mt. Hala in Jeju Island were seasonally sampled and analyzed for their major ion chemistry and oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions to investigate their hydrogeochemical and isotopic characteristics. Dissolved ion concentrations of the south-side springs slightly increase with decreasing altitude. This indicates that dissolved ion concentrations of groundwater recharged at higher altitudes increase by water-rock interaction during the downgradient migration of groundwater through highly permeable volcanic aquifer. Dissolved ion concentrations of the north-side springs also slightly increase with decreasing altitude, but dramatically increase at ~300 m.a.s.l. This may indicate a sudden input of contaminants to the north-side groundwater system around ~300 m.a.s.l. Springs located in areas above ~300 m.a.s.l. have very low concentrations of dissolved ions, showing little seasonal variations. Whereas springs located in areas below ~300 m.a.s.l. show a big seasonal variation in the concentration of dissolved ions. Seasonal variation of oxygen isotope compositions of springs is ~3$\textperthousand$ for high-altitude springs (~1700 m.a.s.l.) and is ~2$\textperthousand$ near shore, indicating an attenuation of the variation through mixing with other groundwater bodies during migration.

  • Three innovative technologies to remediate trichloroethylene (TCE) in situ were (or currently are being) evaluated at a TCE-contaminated groundwater site at Edwards Air Force Base (AFB), California. The three technologies all make use of groundwater recirculation to obviate the need to pump contaminated groundwater to the surface fer treatment. The first technology, which implements aerobic cometabolic bioremediation to destroy TCE in situ, successfully reduced dissolved TCE concentrations from above 1 mg/L to 20-30 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L. The second technology, in-well vapor stripping (IWVS), is capable of treating dissolved TCE at concentrations in the tens to hundreds of mg/L. Finally, the third technology, bioenhanced in-well vapor stripping (BEHIVS): is a combination of the first two technologies, and is designed to reduce very high levels of TCE (tens to hundreds of mg/L) to concentrations that meet regulatory requirements 5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L). Results of field evaluations of tile first two technologies are presented, and the design of the BEHIVS system. as well as model predictions of BEHIVS performance and the current status of the technology field evaluation. is discussed.

  • There are two case history. One is the case of 3 wells-group well system-drilled and artificially hydrofractured for dewatering to help to excavate and treat deep building foundation. The recoveries of groundwater of 3 wells are increased 29%, 42% and 110% respectively through hydrofracturing. Simultaneous pumping test reveals that 3 wells are geohydrologically interconnected considering lowered specific capacity comprising influence of additional drawdown effect by other 2 wells compared to single well test. Response time effect during single well test shows that dorminant lineaments are more expandable to other geological structures. The other one is the case of 28% increasing of groundwater productivity for domestic use by hydrofracturing.

  • Risk and exposure assessment for subsurface environment is very important for both aspects of health and environmental protection as well as making decision of remedial goal for engineering activities. Exposure due to hazardous chemicals in the subsurface environment is essential to assess risk lev121 to individual person, especially from soil and groundwater environmental media. In this paper, the status of soil and groundwater contamination is presented to discuss on the problem for environmental risk assessment. The methodologies of fate and exposure models are also discussed by conducting the case studies of exposure assessment for heavy metals, organic compounds, and dioxin compounds. In addition, the structure of exposure models and available data for model calculation are examined to make clear more realistic exposure scenarios and the application to the practical environmental issues. Three kinds of advanced remediation techniques for soil and groundwater contamination are described in this paper, The most practical method for VOCs is the bio-remediation technique in which biological process due to consortium of microorganisms can be applied. For more effective remediation of soil contaminated by heavy metals we have adopted the soil flushing technique and clean-up system using electro-kinetic method. We have also developed the advanced techniques of geo-melting method for soil contaminated by DXNs and PCB compounds. These techniques are planed to introduce and to apply for a lot of contaminated sites in Japan.

  • The estimation of groundwater usage in Jeju island is important to understand hydrologic cycle system and to plan management of water resource because large amounts of groundwater have been used for agricultural and domestic purpose. The model has been developed to estimate agricultural groundwater usage for garlic at uplands and citrus at orchards raising outdoors using the soil water balance model from FAO 56, respectively. The total amount of water supplied for the crop evapotranspiration and the multipurpose function such as sprout promotion can be simulated by the model. However, due to the discrepancy of water use in initial stage between calculated and observed, the model was calibrated and verified using actual groundwater usage monitoring data for 3.5 years (2011.6 to 2014.12) at three uplands for garlic and three orchards for citrus. Consequently, it would be concluded that the model simulated efficiently actual water usage in that root mean square (RMS) and normalized RMS of the validation stage were less than 8.99 mm and 2.43%, respectively, in two different conditions.

  • Alkalinity is an essential parameter for understanding geochemical processes and calculating partial pressure of $CO_2$, dissolved inorganic carbon, and mineral saturation indices. The Gran Titration Method (GTM) is one of the most accurate methods for measuring the alkalinity in water samples. However, this method has not been widely employed in measuring groundwater alkalinity in Korea, probably due to inadequate and insufficient understanding of the method. In this regard, this article was prepared to introduce GTM and related know-hows learned from the authors' experiences in measuring alkalinity. This paper also introduces a MS Excel-based alkalinity calculator as a handy tool for GTM.
