  • This study examines groundwater movement system analysis and movement forecast algorithm using finite element method. The target is Cheongha-myeon area, Bukgu, Pohang-city which has many difficulties in water supply during drought period. From the comparison of the differences between obtained values by WINFlOW model and observed values, it is thought that groundwater head distribution under steady flow is reflected well at the level of reliability Groundwater movement of study area shows stable pattern from western watershed to eastern coastal area while flow path is dense and steep in the center of the coastal area. The results of particle tracing for each well show a comparatively straight line from the western boundary side to the observation position at the upper area of the well, and are analyzed as it diffuses according to getting closer to the coast at the lower area of the well. The result of effect circle examination attendant on pumping amount in study area shows variation tendency that groundwater head decreases at the side and the lower area more than at the upper area of the well when groundwater flows from west to east(coast). As mentioned above, satisfactory results of groundwater movement analysis using WINFlOW model, two dimensional groundwater movement analysis model, are obtained through the great decrease of physical uncertainty of groundwater movement system.

  • The Philippine government enacted the National Water Crisis Act in 1995, as a response to the burgeoning situation of water supply systems in the country. This act led to the privatization of Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), sector having jurisdiction and control over all waterworks and sewerage systems in a service area including Metro Manila. Nowadays, the region's supply of water is still facing a lot of difficulties, both in quality and quantity. The unabated migration of people to the metro which increases its population, tapping from the aged pipelines, lack of water facilities and infrastructure, excessive groundwater withdrawal, environmental degradation, and surface and groundwater pollution are some of the issues that Metro Manila have to deal with. These situations lead to two primary water supply issues suffered by Metro Manila: water shortage and flooding. The purpose of this paper was to present water supply in Metro Manila with respect to the problems in its distribution, environmental implications and quality. In this paper, several technical reports, published literature, and news articles were consulted and became the major basis for identifying gaps and suggesting remedial measures.

  • Recently, the gap between demand and supply of natural aggregate has increased owing to the depletion of aggregate sources. Therefore, policy support is necessary for the stable supply of aggregate resources. Public and construction works experience problems when they do not receive a steady supply of aggregate. Further, instabilities in aggregate supply lead to increases in aggregate prices, and consequently construction costs. As a result, the likelihood of poor construction using low-grade aggregate increases. It is therefore crucial to put measures in place that deal with these issues. This study aims to reduce the load imposed by aggregate use on the environment by recycling soil dredged from sewage ducts to reduce the gap between supply and demand of fine aggregate. The dredged soil is assessed using an applicability test for quality characteristics and solidification with basic properties. This study aims to secure the safety of dredging soil and solidified objects through interior physical and chemical analyses and to utilize it as a base material for concrete solidification in the future.

  • There is an increasing need for water supply plan using sustainable groundwater to resolve water shortage problem caused by drought due to climate change and artificial aquifer recharge has recently emerged as an alternative. This study deals with recharge potential assessment for artificial recharge system and quantitative assessment for securing stable water and efficient agricultural water supply adapt to drought finding optimal operating condition by numerical modeling to reflect recharge scenarios considering climate condition, target water intake, injection rate, and injection duration. In order to assess recharge potential of injection well, numerical simulation was performed to predict groundwater level changes in injection and observation well respect to injection scenarios (Case 1~4) for a given total injection rate (10,000 m3). The results indicate that groundwater levels for each case are maintained for 25~42 days and optimal injection rate is 50 m3/day for Case 3 resulted in groundwater level rise less than 1 m below surface. The results also show that influential area of groundwater level rise due to injection was estimated at 113.5 m and groundwater storage and elapsed time were respectively increased by 6 times and 4 times after installation of low permeable barrier. The proposed assessment method can be contributed to sustainable agricultural water supply and stable water security for drought adaptation.

  • It is important to understand groundwater conditions such as recharge, flow and hydrochemical process occurred within an aquifer for groundwater protection and groundwater resource management. Groundwater from the Triassic Sherwood Sandstone aquifer of North Yorkshire has been used for industrial purposes and domestic water supply. Tn order to understand the processes affecting groundwater chemistry and identify the sources of high chloride, sulphate and nitrate concentrations hydrochemical and isotopic measurements were carried out. Hydrochemical and isotopic measurements indicated that five groundwater types exist within the Sherwood Sandstone aquifer of study area. The results of hydrochemical and isotopic measurements showed that older groundwaters have different hydrochemical and isotopic characteristics from recent recharge water. It was also found that water-rock interactions are the dominant mechanism controlling the ${\delta}^{13}C$ composition of dissolved inorganic carbon, the ${\delta}^{34}S\;and\;{\delta}^{18}O$ composition of dissolved sulphate and the strontium isotope ratios ($^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$) in recent recharge water and old groundwater. Several abstraction boreholes within the Selby wellfield have been contaminated by saline water. The isotopic data of saline groundwater samples taken from these abstraction boreholes indicate that saline waters are derived from the dissolution of the Triassic evaporites within the Mercia Mudstone.

  • The increasing frequency of droughts has been increasing the necessity of utilizing subsurface dams as reliable groundwater resources in areas where it is difficult to supply adequate agricultural water using only surface water. In this study, we analyzed the current status and actual conditions of five agricultural subsurface dams as well as the effect of obtaining additional groundwater from subsurface dams operated as one aspect of the sustainable integrated water management system. Based on the construction methods and functions of each subsurface dam, the five subsurface dams are classified into three types such as those that derive water from rivers, those that prevent seawater intrusion, and those that link to a main irrigation canal. The classification is based on various conditions including topography, reservoir location, irrigation facilities, and river and alluvial deposit distributions. Agricultural groundwater upstream of subsurface dams is obtained from four to five radial collector wells. From the study, the total amount of groundwater recovered from the subsurface dam is turned out to be about 29~44% of the total irrigation water demand, which is higher than that of general agricultural groundwater of about 4.6%.

  • Among a number of methodologies for developing groundwater supply to overcome drought events reported in the research community, an accurate estimation of the groundwater level is an important initial issue to provide an efficient method for operating groundwater. The primary objective of this paper is to develop an advanced prediction model for the groundwater level in the catchment area of the Ssangcheon groundwater dam using precipitation based period dividing algorithm and response surface methodology (RSM). A numerical example clearly shows that the proposed method can effectively forecast groundwater level in terms of correlation coefficient ($R^2$) in the upstream part of the Ssangcheon groundwater dam.

  • Alternatives to conventional water resources are being sought due to the scarcity and the poor quality of surface water. Riverbank filtration (RBF) is one of them and considered as a promising source of water supply in some cities. Changwon City has started RBF in 2001 and field data have been accumulated. This study is to develop a time-series model for groundwater level data collected from the pumping area of RBF. The site is Daesan-myeon, Changwon City, where groundwater level data have been measured for the last five years (Jan. 2003$\sim$Dec. 2007). Minute-based groundwater levels was averaged out to monthly data to see the long-term behavior. Time-series analysis was conducted according to the Box-Jenkins method. The resulted model turned out to be a seasonal ARIMA model, and its forecasting performance was satisfactory. We believe this study will provide a prototype for other riverbank filtration sites where the predictability of groundwater level is essential for the reliable supply of water.

  • In Korea, there are 1,474 thousand pumping wells nationwide which account for about 12% of total water use in 2012. As much as 39 hundred million tons of groundwater were used while 333 hundred million tons of total water were supplied in 2012. Because the water management authority projects that water demand will exceed supply by 2021, the authority is planning to extensively expand groundwater use in accordance with economic feasibility. Using the basic frameworks of cost-benefit analyses of the World Bank and the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), the objective of this study is to examine the costs and benefits of the expansion of Korea's groundwater extraction through pumping wells. We conclude that the BC ratio of the groundwater pumping wells is 2.98. This signifies that the benefits are 2.98 times higher than the costs. The benefits include use and non-use values of pumping wells while the costs include the installation and maintenance of new wells, in addition to the restoration and pollution costs of abandoned wells, as well as fees for water quality tests, etc.

  • Human Aichivirus (Aichivirus A; AiV-A) is a positive-sense single-strand RNA non-enveloped virus that has been detected worldwide in various water environments including sewage, river, surface, and ground over the past decade. To develop a method with excellent sensitivity and specificity for AiV-A diagnosis from water environments such as groundwater, a combination capable of reverse transcription (RT)-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was developed based on existing reported and newly designed primers. A selective method was applied to evaluate domestic drinking groundwater samples. Thus, a procedure was devised to select and subsequently identify RT-nested PCR primer sets that can successfully detect and identify AiV-A from groundwater samples. The findings will contribute to developing a better monitoring system to detect AiV-A contamination in water environments such as groundwater.
