  • Six land use data for a total of twenty five years were reviewed from 1975 to 2000 by dividing the period by 5-year unit; the land use variation was schematized; the watershed hydrological parameters were extracted by the representative rainfall years(maximum, average, driest year) by analyzing the recent thirty years'(from 1980 to 2010) climate data of the study region with SWAT model to investigate the effect of the precipitation change on the characteristics of groundwater recharge. In addition Markov Chain model was used to estimate the future land use; the predicted land use was applied to study the effect of the land use variation on the characteristics of groundwater recharge. For the research of this, long-term characteristics of groundwater recharge were estimated for the study region; the obtained results can be described as follows. The study region was divided into typical three area using SWAT model; yearly land use conditions were applied to the meteorological data of 1975 to 2010 and analyzed, producing the average rate of groundwater recharge of 30% for the applied period. This number is way lower than that of the earlier studies on the groundwater recharge for Jeju Island, which is 40-50%. Thirty percent (30%) is low considering the geological characteristics of Jeju, water-permeable vesicular strata, the reason of which must be the type of development is non-permeable paving.

  • Kim and Lee(2005) suggested Minimum Entropy Deconvolution(MED) to estimate the temporal sequence of the relative recharge. However this study by Kim and Lee(2005) was just related to the verification of the conceptual approach with MED. In this study, we try to characterize the applicability of MED in the case of spatially heterogeneous recharge (distance from recharge area). Simulated results were recorded with some specific sampling points. Estimated results from this study show higher than 0.8 in cross-correlation with the original recharge sequence.

  • In Korea, the methods of estimating groundwater recharge can categorized into two groups. One is baseflow separation method by means of groundurater recession curve, the other is water level fluctuation method by using the data from groundwater monitoring wells. Baseflow separation method is based on annual recharge and lumped concept, and water-table fluctuation method is largely dependent on monitoring wells rather than water budget in watershed. However, groundwater recharge rate shows the spatial-temporal variability due to climatic condition, land use and hydrogeological heterogeneity, these methods have various limits to deal with these characteristics. For this purpose, the method of estimating daily recharge rate with spatial variability based on distributed rainfall-runoff model is suggested in this study. Instead of representative recharge rate of large watershed, the subdivided recharge rate with heterogeneous characteristics can be computed in daily base. The estimated daily recharge rate is an advanced quantity reflecting the heterogeneity of hydrogeology, climatic condition, land use as well as physical behaviour of water in soil layers. Therefore, the newly suggested method could be expected to enhance existing methods.

  • It is getting difficult to manage water resources in South Korea because more than half of annual precipitation is concentrated in the summer season and its intensity is getting severe due to global warming and climate change. Artificial recharge schemes can be a useful method to manage water resources in Korea adapting to climate change. Patent analysis enables us to prevent overlapping investment and to find out unoccupied technology. In this study, international patent trends and barriers of artificial recharge technology are analysed for patents of Korea, Japan, the United States and Europe. The four artificial recharge methods such as well recharge, surface infiltration, bank filtration and underground structures are classified as main class and the nine sub-technologies such as water intake, water treatment, injection wells, monitoring of groundwater flow, groundwater pumping, surface infiltration/soil aquifer treatment, radial collection well, iron/manganese treatment, and underground subsurface dam are classified as intermediate class. Water intake techniques are subdivided into five classifications. Total 1,281 of patents, searched by WIPS DB tool and selected after removing noisy patents, are analyzed quantitatively to evaluate application trends by year, applicant, country for each classified technologies and analyzed qualitatively to find out occupied and unoccupied technologies. It is expected that upcoming research and development project could be performed efficiently in that an avoidance plan for the similar patents and differentiation plan for the advancing patents are set up based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis results from this research.

  • Local drought in South Korea has recently increased interest in the efficient use of groundwater and then induces a growing need to introduce artificial recharge of groundwater that stores water in sedimentary layer. In order to evaluate the potential artificial recharge sites in the alluvial basins in Chungcheongnamdo province, an AHP (Analytical hierarchy process) model consisting of three primary and seven secondary factors was developed in this study. In the AHP model, adding candidate sites changes final evaluation score through a mathematical calculation process. By contrast ANN (Artificial neural network) model always provides an unchanged score for each candidate area. Therefore, the score can be used as a selection criterion for artificial recharge sites. It is concluded that the possibility of artificial recharge is relatively low if the score of the ANN model is less than about 1.5. Further studies and field surveys on the other regions in Korea will lead to draw out a more applicable ANN model.

  • For the preliminary investigations of the bioclogging on groundwater artificial recharge system, studies for conditions and analytical methods of biofilm formation on sediments were performed. Based on the tested results, following conditions were determined for biofilm formation on batch process: optimum period for biofilm formation (30 days), the proper inoculating water (pond water), medium (minimum salt medium with 0.1% yeast extract). Procedures for the measurement of ATP and DHA were also determined. Biomass extract was used for ATP measurement, while sediment itself for DHA. Effects of metals on the biofilm formation were investigated under the determined conditions. Different sensitivities and orders were found depending on tested metals and measurement methods. In general, biomass measurement by ATP and viable cell count showed higher sensitivity than that of DHA. Following toxicity orders were also appeared for ATP and viable cell: Cu ≈ Cd > As(III).

  • Hydrologic component analysis was conducted to investigate water budget characteristics the Oedocheon watershed, Jeju Island. For this purpose, integrated SWAT-MODFLOW model was applied to this watershed for continuous surface water-groundwater modeling. Pasture and forest-deciduous are the major land use types and these affect general hydrologic component ratio. The spatio-temporal groundwater recharge can be obtained from SWAT and then distributed groundwater recharge can be reproduced by MODFLOW. The groundwater level variation was simulated with distributed groundwater pumping data. The water budget in this watershed was compared with the previous estimated result by Jeju-Do(2013). As this result considered discharge to the coastal side, the discrepancy was found. However, it was found that the overall tendency of both analyses were similar.

  • The processes and rates of groundwater recharge were studied by long-term monitoring of groundwater level and isotopic compositions of precipitation, surface water and groundwater in the Yeosu area. The isotopic compositions of surface water and groundwater were directly related to the precipitation event. It is also shown that the minimum amount of precipitation for infiltration to groundwater is about 20mm. The isotopic variations of groundwater shows that the Isotopic composition of groundwater changed by each precipitation event between June and Sep. 2000 is gradually changed without input of precipitation again. It indicates that the groundwater recharged from the upper part is mixed with the groundwater in reservoir. The infiltration rate of first precipitation event after a dry season is estimated to be 16.5% using isotopic mixing equations. It is expected that the groundwater recharge rate could be estimated more quantitavely, if the isotopic method is combined with the conservative methods.

  • When the United Nation classified as Korea is the one of the water deficit country. The consensus was made that the water is the one of the precious national resources. Government increases their R/D budget trying to get more clean water bodies. For instances, 'Sustainable Water Resources Development' project is the one of major title in '21 Century Frontier Research project and there are several small research projects are undergoing by the Ministry of Agriculture and KARICO. However, when the environmental preservation issue has been get more emphasis, construction of the Surface Dam met the blockage from the environmentalists due to the problem of the their water buried area. Since the most fitting site for surface dam had been used in the past, some engineer move their focus on modification of the existing Dam's height to enlarge its capacity or dredging the bottom of the reservoir recently However dredging evoke water quality problem in return by accumulated materials at the bottom. Last year the Dong Gang Dam plan has been canceled by environmental problem in water buried area of the reservoir. With the point of this view, ground water gets more focus for the one of the useful alternative for clean water bodies. Underground dam technique which had widely applied once in the early nineteen eighties by the KARICO and attenuated due to engineering insufficiency. The technique is newly studied with the advanced engineering technique. Still groundwater usage rate in Korea is much lower comparing with the advanced countries and has many rooms to develop. Wells, under ground dam and radial collector wells are typical facilities up to now. There is little application in Korea for the Recharge Dam, which had been widely used in the advanced countries. The Recharge Dam is technique to conjunct surface water and groundwater body together, This technique had developed to increase groundwater recharge at the beginning This research is the result of the study on the possibility of the development of the new technology, Groundwater Reservoir' which was modified from Recharge Dam. Groundwater Reservoir is like a deep artificial lakes trenched in hard rock aquifer to get groundwater. The advantage of the Groundwater Reservoir is followings 1) It can be developed at the plains area, not in the deep valley 2) Huge water body can be developed without dam 3) Small buried area comparing surface water dam makes the least environmental effect. 4) Trenching cost can be substitute by the income of the selling rock debris 5) Outfit of the reservoir can be modified to match with the site prospect 6) Rock debris can be used as constructing materials 7) It can be used as groundwater recharge system when the heavy rains comes 8) The reservoir looks like scenery lake with huge clean water bodies.

  • Required essential technique is to determine the maximum recharge pressure in the well with condition of non-ground failure for the recovery of the groundwater. Based on the classical soil mechanics, the maximum recharge pressure was estimated with the numerical anlaysis and laboratory triaxial test. In the numerical analysis, the maximum recharge pressure is defined as the ground failure stress. The ground failure of the sand was defined as the piping and the one of the caly was to the undrained failure by the confined pressure increment. In the triaxial test, the recharge pressure in the ground was modified by the back pressure in the specimen. In case of sand, the volume strain was dramatically increased at the 93 % of the maximum back pressure, same meaning of the 0 effective stress state. In case of clay, the only radial volume strain was to reached 1.5 % without failure. Therefore, The maximum recharge pressure could be determined with the numerical analysis and triaxial test.
